Chapter 8: The Woman Behind Megan
I spent the next twenty-four hours trying to convince myself there had to be another explanation.
People lied.
People exaggerated.
People hid embarrassing parts of their past.
But Megan’s secrets weren’t small.
They weren’t harmless.
They were carefully buried.
And now I was standing above the grave.
Claire sent me the photo.
It was blurry.
Taken from across the restaurant.
At first, I didn’t see anything.
Then I zoomed in.
Behind Megan’s shoulder was a woman.
Older.
Dark hair.
A familiar expression.
Not because I knew her.
Because I had seen that expression before.
Megan had it.
The same confident smile.
The same cold eyes.
“Who is she?”” I asked Claire.
“I found her name.””
A pause.
“Her name is Vanessa.””
I searched my memory.
Nothing.
“Megan never mentioned her.””
“She wouldn’t.””
“Why?””
Claire hesitated.
“Because Vanessa is her sister.””
I sat down.
“Megan told me she was an only child.””
“I know.””
The room felt smaller.
“Why would she lie about that?””
Claire’s answer came quietly.
“Because Vanessa disappeared from her life.””
“Disappeared?””
“She cut contact years ago.””
“Why?””
Claire was silent.
Then she said:
“Because of what Megan did.””
I met Claire that evening.
She brought a folder.
“I didn’t want to believe this either.””
Inside were newspaper articles.
Old ones.
The kind of stories people hoped would disappear.
I read the headline.
*LOCAL WOMAN ACCUSED OF MANIPULATING FAMILY FRIENDS*
The name wasn’t Megan.
It was Vanessa.
I looked confused.
“Wait.””
Claire nodded.
“I think Megan changed the story.””
I kept reading.
The article described a woman accused of destroying friendships through lies and manipulation.
But the details didn’t match what I knew.
The dates.
The locations.
The names.
Something was wrong.
Then I saw a photograph.
Vanessa.
And beside her, a younger Megan.
My blood ran cold.
“Megan blamed her sister.””
Claire nodded.
“She told everyone Vanessa was unstable.””
“But?””
“But Vanessa said Megan was the one doing it.””
I stared at the article.
“Why didn’t anyone believe her?””
“Because Megan was better at telling the story.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because it was true.
Megan always controlled the story.
I remembered every argument.
Every time she made someone apologize.
Every time she somehow became the victim.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From an unknown number.
*I know you found out about Vanessa.*
My fingers went numb.
I showed Claire.
“Who is that?””
Another message appeared.
*She was the first person Megan replaced.*
I swallowed.
Then:
*I’m the second.*
A name appeared.
Vanessa.
I answered.
*Who are you?*
The reply came immediately.
*Someone who spent years trying to warn people about her.*
We agreed to meet.
Vanessa looked nothing like Megan.
That was the first thing I noticed.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Megan carried herself like every room belonged to her.
Vanessa looked like someone who had spent years apologizing for existing.
“I’m sorry you got pulled into this,” she said.
I sat across from her.
“Why did you contact me?””
“Because I saw what she did at the dinner.””
“You were there?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Because I knew she was planning something.””
My heart tightened.
“How?””
“She contacted me.””
“Megan?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She wanted me to watch.””
“Watch what?””
“You.””
I felt sick.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Because she wanted to know if you would fight back.””
A chill moved through me.
“She wanted to test me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Vanessa took a deep breath.
“Because she doesn’t just want your husband.””
The answer came slowly.
“She wants to become the person everyone loves.””
I stared at her.
Then she handed me a small envelope.
“This is why.””
Inside was a letter.
Written years ago.
The handwriting was Megan’s.
The first line made my heart stop.
*Dear Emily,*
I looked up.
“She wrote to me?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Before she ever became your friend.””
I read the next sentence.
May you like
And suddenly, I understood.
*I found the perfect person to replace.*
