Chapter 9: The Mother Who Came Back from the Dead

I didn't sleep.

At four in the morning, I met Agent Mitchell in the hospital's underground parking garage.

I showed her the photograph.

She studied it for several seconds.

Then she looked at me.

“That's your mother?””

“Yes.””

“Are you certain?””

“I would recognize her anywhere.””

Agent Mitchell handed the photograph to another agent.

“Run facial confirmation. Check every known property connected to the Cole family.””

I shook my head.

“They won't be at a property.””

“Why?””

“Because my mother knows how I think. She knows where I'll look.””

I took out the photograph of my father standing outside the private medical facility.

“There's another place.””

Agent Mitchell studied it.

“Where?””

“The old Hale estate.””

She nodded.

“We'll organize a team.””

“No.””

Her expression hardened.

“Mr. Hale, you are not going alone.””

“I'm not going alone. I'm going with you.””

I looked at her.

“But I want to be the one who talks to my mother.””

She considered it.

Then nodded.

“Fine. But you follow every instruction.””

The old estate stood beyond a line of pine trees, nearly an hour outside the city.

My father had purchased it decades earlier.

It was where he had grown up.

The main house had been abandoned after his death.

The windows were boarded.

The garden had become overgrown.

A rusted iron gate hung open.

I stared at the building.

I remembered running through those gardens as a child.

I remembered my mother sitting on the veranda, watching me play.

I remembered my father carrying me inside when I fell and scraped my knee.

How could the same people who had given me those memories have destroyed my family?

Agent Mitchell touched my shoulder.

“Ready?””

I nodded.

We entered through the side door.

The house smelled of dust and damp wood.

A narrow hallway led toward the basement.

I recognized the old staircase.

My father had always told me never to enter the lower level.

He said it contained dangerous machinery.

Now I knew there had been another reason.

The archive.

We descended.

At the bottom, a metal door stood behind a row of old cabinets.

I removed the small cylinder from Elena's wedding ring.

It fitted into a narrow opening.

The lock clicked.

Inside was a dark room filled with filing cabinets.

Agent Mitchell switched on her flashlight.

“Good Lord.””

There were hundreds of files.

Birth certificates.

Medical records.

Bank transfers.

Photographs.

A list of names.

And a small tape recorder on the desk.

I picked it up.

A label had been attached.

For Marcus. Only if the family has been betrayed.

My hands trembled.

I pressed play.

My father's voice filled the room.

“Marcus, if you're hearing this, then I failed to protect you.””

I closed my eyes.

His voice sounded tired.

“Your mother has become involved with people who believe children can be treated as property. I discovered the truth after Daniel was born. They intended to remove him from the family and use his identity to gain control of the trust.””

A pause.

Then he continued.

“I confronted your mother. She told me I was too old to understand the modern world.””

I swallowed.

“I tried to take the documents to the authorities. But someone informed Richard. I believe my death is now being arranged.””

Agent Mitchell looked at me.

The recording continued.

“Marcus, your mother will tell you she loves you. She will tell you everything she did was to protect the family. Do not believe her.””

A metallic click sounded on the recording.

Then my father's voice became quieter.

“There is one more thing. The child they identified as Daniel may not be the only child they moved.””

I froze.

“What?””

Agent Mitchell leaned closer.

My father's voice continued.

“Your mother arranged another birth registration years before Elena became pregnant. A child was given your family's name, but the biological records were changed.””

The recording stopped.

I stared at the machine.

What child?

I had never heard anything about another baby.

Agent Mitchell searched through the files.

Then she pulled out a folder.

“Marcus.””

I turned.

She held up a birth certificate.

The mother's name was unfamiliar.

But the father's name was mine.

I looked closer.

The date was six months before I married Elena.

I felt dizzy.

“That's impossible.””

Agent Mitchell read the document.

“Male child. Biological father: Marcus Andrew Hale.””

I shook my head.

“I never had another child.””

She opened the attached medical report.

Then looked at me.

“According to this document, you did.””

Before I could respond, footsteps sounded behind us.

Slow.

Deliberate.

A woman appeared in the doorway.

She wore a black coat.

Her silver hair was neatly arranged.

Her face was older, thinner, but unmistakable.

My mother.

“Hello, Marcus.””

I stared at her.

“You're alive.””

She smiled.

“Of course I am.””

Agent Mitchell raised her weapon.

“Ma'am, don't move.””

My mother looked at her.

Then at me.

“Still bringing strangers into family business?””

I stepped forward.

“Where is Elena?””

“Somewhere she can't cause trouble.””

“Where is she?””

My mother sighed.

“You sound just like your father.””

I clenched my jaw.

“Did you kill him?””

She tilted her head.

“He was a weak man. He thought doing the right thing would make him a hero.””

“Did you poison him?””

She didn't answer.

Instead, she walked toward the desk.

“Do you know why I chose Vanessa?””

I said nothing.

“She was ambitious. Intelligent. And she understood that family loyalty is more important than sentiment.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You call kidnapping my wife loyalty?””

“I call it necessary.””

“You stole my children.””

She shook her head.

“I protected the inheritance.””

I stared at her.

“You destroyed our family.””

“No, Marcus. Your father did that when he decided to leave everything to you.””

I looked at the files.

“What's the other child?””

For the first time, my mother's expression changed.

She glanced toward the folder in Agent Mitchell's hand.

Then she smiled.

“Ah. You found him.””

“Who is he?””

She took a slow breath.

“Your first son.””

I felt the floor shift.

“What?””

“Before Elena. Before Ava. Before Daniel.””

I shook my head.

“I never had a son before Daniel.””

My mother laughed softly.

“You were very young. Your father handled everything.””

I stared at her.

“Where is he?””

She looked toward the stairs.

“Closer than you think.””

A loud crash sounded upstairs.

Agent Mitchell turned.

Then her radio crackled.

“Team two, we have a problem. The rear entrance is compromised.””

My mother smiled.

“Richard has arrived.””

I grabbed the folder.

“Where is Elena?””

My mother stepped closer.

“Bring me the archive, and I'll tell you.””

“You're not getting it.””

She sighed.

“Then I suppose you'll never meet your firstborn.””

A second voice came from the doorway.

“Actually, Marcus, I think you already have.””

I turned.

A man stood behind my mother.

He was tall, wearing a dark coat.

His face was familiar.

Not because I had met him.

But because I had seen him in old family photographs.

The man who had stood beside my father at business dinners.

The man I had believed died overseas years earlier.

My father's former business partner.

Jonathan Hale.

My uncle.

He smiled.

“It's been a long time, nephew.””

May you like

Then he looked at the folder in my hands.

“And I believe you have something that belongs to me.””
