Chapter 6: The Boy Holding Vanessa's Hand
For several seconds, nobody moved.
I stared at the little boy standing inside the elevator.
Blonde hair.
Blue eyes.
A small crescent-shaped birthmark behind his left ear.
The same mark Elena had described.
My son.
Daniel.
He looked frightened, confused, and terribly small inside his oversized gray sweater.
Vanessa held his hand as if she owned him.
“Hello, Marcus,” she repeated.
“It's been a long time.””
I tightened my arms around Ava.
“Get away from my son.””
Vanessa glanced down at Daniel.
“Do you hear that, sweetheart? Your father is finally interested in you.””
Daniel looked up at her.
“Is he really my daddy?””
Something inside my chest cracked.
I took one step forward.
“Yes, buddy. I'm your daddy.””
Daniel didn't move.
Instead, he hid behind Vanessa's leg.
She gently stroked his hair.
“Don't be frightened. Your father has been through a lot. He's not thinking clearly.””
I looked at Rebecca.
“Give me the ring.””
My sister closed her fingers around it.
“Marcus, please. Let me explain.””
“You signed a document to remove my wife from this hospital. You helped these people steal my son. What exactly is there left to explain?””
Rebecca's eyes filled with tears.
“I didn't know they were bringing Daniel here.””
Vanessa laughed softly.
“Rebecca, don't embarrass yourself.””
My sister flinched.
I noticed it.
That tiny reaction told me something important.
Rebecca wasn't standing beside Vanessa because she wanted to.
She was terrified of her.
“Vanessa,” I said quietly, “you have about five seconds to explain why my son is holding your hand.””
Vanessa checked her watch.
“Actually, Marcus, I think you should listen before you make another mistake.””
She reached into her handbag and removed a thick folder.
Then she placed it on the small table beside the elevator.
“Your father left behind quite a mess.””
I didn't touch it.
“What does that have to do with Daniel?””
“Everything.””
She opened the folder.
Inside were photographs, bank statements, hospital documents, and copies of my father's old business contracts.
“Your father created the Hale family trust to protect the company. But he also made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“He gave Elena too much access.””
Vanessa smiled.
“Your wife discovered the original trust documents. She learned that the company had been funding a private medical network for years.””
I stared at her.
“What network?””
“Private maternity clinics. Adoption agencies. Medical transport companies.””
She paused.
“Your father was involved in all of it.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Oh, Marcus. You really do want your family to be innocent.””
She pulled out another document.
“This is the original agreement. Your father signed it. So did your mother.””
I recognized their signatures.
My hands began trembling.
Vanessa continued.
“They were involved in arranging private placements for children whose identities could be changed. Wealthy families paid enormous sums for discreet arrangements. Some believed they were adopting children legally. Others wanted their own biological children erased from complicated inheritance disputes.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Was my son part of that?””
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
“Your son was supposed to be transferred to another family.””
I felt my knees weaken.
“Why?””
“Because your father discovered that Daniel's birth complicated the succession structure of the family trust.””
I stared at her.
“My son was a baby.””
“And babies don't understand inheritance.””
I moved toward her.
The security guard immediately stepped between us.
“Sir, please.””
I looked at the guard.
“Get out of my way.””
Vanessa raised one finger.
“Don't. We wouldn't want Daniel frightened.””
I forced myself to stop.
“Where is Elena?””
“Safe.””
“Where?””
“Somewhere you won't find her unless I want you to.””
Ava began crying.
“Give Mommy back!””
Vanessa looked at her.
For the first time, her expression turned openly cruel.
“Your mother should have stayed where she belonged.””
I nearly lunged at her.
But Daniel suddenly spoke.
“Don't talk about Mommy like that.””
Everyone turned.
Vanessa's hand tightened around his.
“Daniel, sweetheart, we discussed this.””
He looked up at her.
“You said Mommy was dead.””
Vanessa froze.
The boy continued.
“You said my real mommy died when I was little.””
My chest tightened.
I crouched slightly.
“Daniel, do you remember your mother?””
He nodded.
“Sometimes.””
“What does she look like?””
He looked toward the elevator.
“She has a little star necklace.””
Elena had a small gold necklace shaped like a star.
She had worn it every day since our wedding.
I swallowed.
“Does she sing to you?””
Daniel's eyes filled.
“Yes.””
“What song?””
He whispered the first line of the lullaby Elena used to sing to Ava.
I couldn't hold back my tears.
“That's your mommy's song, buddy.””
Vanessa suddenly pulled him backward.
“Enough.””
Daniel struggled.
“I want my mommy!””
She slapped the folder shut.
“Take the children.””
Two security guards moved toward me.
I stepped back, shielding Ava.
“Touch either child and I'll make sure every person involved spends the rest of their life in prison.””
Vanessa laughed.
“You still think you have control here?””
Then Rebecca stepped forward.
“Vanessa, stop.””
Vanessa turned.
“What did you say?””
Rebecca's voice trembled.
“I said stop.””
“Go back to your place.””
“No.””
Vanessa's expression hardened.
“You know what happens when you disobey me.””
Rebecca looked at Daniel.
Then at Ava.
Then she made a decision.
She threw Elena's wedding ring toward me.
I caught it.
“Marcus! The archive!””
Vanessa screamed.
“Get her!””
The security guards rushed toward Rebecca.
I grabbed Ava and ran toward the stairwell.
Behind me, I heard Daniel shouting.
“Daddy!””
I stopped.
Ava grabbed my jacket.
“Daddy, don't leave him!””
I turned.
Daniel was struggling against Vanessa.
One of the guards had lifted him into his arms.
I had two choices.
Run with Ava.
Or go back for my son.
I turned around.
“Put him down!””
The guard ignored me.
Then the hospital alarm sounded.
A fire door slammed shut between the corridor and the elevator.
Someone had activated the emergency lockdown.
The lights flashed red.
Vanessa screamed.
“Richard!””
A man emerged from the stairwell.
Tall.
Dark hair.
A scar near his right ear.
Richard Cole.
He held a gun.
“Everybody stay where you are.””
Daniel began crying.
Vanessa looked at me.
“Now, Marcus, let's stop pretending this is a family reunion.””
Richard pointed the gun toward my chest.
“It's time to sign the transfer.””
He placed another document on the table.
I glanced at it.
It was an authorization giving control of the Hale family trust to a private company.
The final signature line was blank.
Richard smiled.
“Sign it, and your children walk out of here alive.””
I looked at Daniel.
Then at Ava.
And finally at the wedding ring in my palm.
The tiny ring had a narrow opening along its inner edge.
I remembered Elena saying there was a key hidden inside.
I twisted the band.
A small metal cylinder dropped into my hand.
Vanessa saw it.
Her smile vanished.
“Richard.””
He looked at me.
“What?””
“Get the key.””
Richard raised his gun.
But before he could move, Rebecca shouted:
“Marcus! Don't give it to them!””
May you like
A gunshot exploded through the corridor.
And Rebecca fell.
