Chapter 2: The Son I Never Buried

The hospital smelled of disinfectant, coffee, and fear.

I sat outside the intensive care unit with Ava asleep against my chest.

Her little fingers were wrapped around my wedding ring.

She had refused to let go of me since the ambulance arrived.

Every few minutes, she opened her eyes.

“Is Mommy still here, Daddy?””

“Yes, sweetheart.””

“She's not going away again?””

I kissed her forehead.

“No. I won't let that happen.””

I wanted to believe those words.

But my mind kept returning to Elena's final question.

Where is the little boy?

We had one child.

Ava.

Our daughter had been born six years earlier after a difficult pregnancy.

There had never been another baby.

At least, that was what I remembered.

I rubbed my face.

Fourteen months earlier, Elena had disappeared during a weekend sailing trip.

She had gone out alone after an argument between us.

The boat was found drifting near the coastline.

Her phone was inside.

Her purse was inside.

A small amount of blood had been discovered near the railing.

Search teams spent weeks looking for her.

Nothing.

Eventually, the authorities declared her presumed dead.

I had paid for private divers, investigators, and additional searches.

I had even searched the beaches myself.

Then Vanessa entered my life.

She had been working as a consultant for my company, Marcus Hale Holdings.

She was charming, organized, and remarkably attentive.

She knew how to speak to a grieving man.

She remembered Elena's birthday.

She bought Ava books.

She sat beside me during nightmares.

And slowly, without realizing it, I allowed her into our home.

Tonight, I had planned to give her a ring.

Now I wondered how much of my grief she had carefully used against me.

The intensive care door opened.

A doctor approached.

“Mr. Hale?””

I stood immediately.

“How is my wife?””

“She's stable, but extremely dehydrated. She's suffered injuries that suggest prolonged confinement. We need to run additional tests.””

“Can I see her?””

“For a few minutes.””

I looked at Ava.

“Can she come?””

The doctor nodded.

We entered together.

Elena lay beneath a white blanket.

An oxygen tube rested beneath her nose.

Her hair had been cleaned, revealing a small scar near her temple.

Ava climbed onto the chair beside the bed.

“Mommy?””

Elena opened her eyes.

A weak smile appeared.

“My little sunshine.””

Ava began crying.

“I missed you.””

Elena reached for her hand.

“I missed you every second.””

I stood at the foot of the bed.

“Elena, I need you to tell me what happened.””

She looked at me.

Her eyes were full of exhaustion.

“Not yet.””

“Sweetheart, someone kept you under my house.””

She swallowed.

“Vanessa didn't want me dead.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“She wanted you to think I was dead.””

I pulled a chair closer.

“Why?””

Elena stared at the ceiling.

“Because of the company.””

I shook my head.

“Vanessa works for me. She doesn't own anything.””

Elena turned toward me.

“Marcus, do you remember the night I disappeared?””

“Of course.””

“Do you remember our argument?””

I nodded.

We had argued about a business transaction.

I had been considering selling a controlling share of the company to an investment group.

Elena had opposed it.

She believed the buyers were connected to someone named Richard Cole.

Vanessa's older brother.

I had dismissed her concerns because I believed she was being overly suspicious.

Elena closed her eyes.

“That night, I found documents in your study. Someone had been transferring money from our family trust.””

I leaned forward.

“What documents?””

“Copies of payments. Offshore accounts. Signatures.””

“Whose signatures?””

“Yours.””

My stomach dropped.

“I never signed anything.””

“I know.””

She looked toward the door.

“Vanessa told me you were involved. She said you had agreed to everything.””

“That's impossible.””

“She showed me papers.””

I shook my head.

“Elena, why didn't you tell me?””

“I tried.””

Her voice cracked.

“She said if I contacted you, she would take Ava.””

I glanced at our daughter.

Ava was watching her mother silently.

Elena lowered her voice.

“Marcus, she had people following me. She knew where I went. She knew who I spoke to.””

“Who helped her?””

“I don't know everyone.””

“Did Richard Cole help?””

Her eyes widened.

“How do you know that name?””

I froze.

“Vanessa's brother.””

Elena looked away.

“Then he's involved.””

I stood.

“I'm calling the police.””

“No!””

She grabbed my hand.

“Not yet.””

“Elena, they need to investigate.””

“Marcus, someone inside the police department knew where I was being kept.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“They came once. A man in uniform. He spoke to Vanessa through the door.””

My skin prickled.

“Did you see his face?””

She shook her head.

“No. But I heard Vanessa call him by his first name.””

“What name?””

Elena hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Thomas.””

A knock sounded at the hospital room door.

A nurse entered.

“Mr. Hale, there's someone here to see you.””

“Who?””

She glanced at her clipboard.

“Detective Thomas Reed.””

Elena's fingers tightened around mine.

Her face became deathly pale.

“Marcus,” she whispered.

“Don't let him in.””

I turned toward the door.

A tall man in a dark suit stood outside.

He held up his identification.

“Mr. Hale? I'm investigating the incident at your residence.””

I looked at Elena.

She was trembling.

Detective Reed stepped inside.

“Mrs. Hale,” he said pleasantly.

“It's been a long time.””

Elena began crying.

I moved between them.

“Do you know my wife?””

Reed gave me a polite smile.

“Unfortunately, yes.””

“Then explain why she looks terrified of you.””

His expression didn't change.

“Mr. Hale, your wife has been missing for fourteen months. We need to establish whether she was involved in her own disappearance.””

I stared at him.

“Are you accusing her of something?””

“I'm asking questions.””

He glanced at Ava.

Then at Elena.

Then he placed a photograph on the bedside table.

It showed a small boy sitting in a hospital bed.

He looked about three years old.

On his wrist was a hospital identification bracelet.

Elena gasped.

“Where did you get that?””

Reed looked at me.

“Mr. Hale, do you recognize this child?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

The detective slowly turned the photograph around.

Written on the back were six words.

Daniel Hale. Biological son of Marcus Hale.

My knees nearly gave way.

Elena covered her mouth.

Then Detective Reed said something that made the entire room go silent.

“Your son has been missing since the same night your wife disappeared.””
