Chapter 5: The Woman Who Stole My Wife's Ring
I ran.
Rebecca followed me through the hospital corridor.
We reached Elena's room in less than a minute.
The door was open.
The nurse stood near the bed, visibly shaken.
Elena was sitting upright.
Her hands were trembling.
“Where is she?”” I demanded.
The nurse looked at me.
“She left through the east corridor.””
“Did anyone stop her?””
“No.””
I turned toward Elena.
“Are you hurt?””
She shook her head.
“She took it.””
“What?””
“My wedding ring.””
I looked at her hand.
The gold band was gone.
I sat beside her.
“Why would she want that?””
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
“Because there's something inside it.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
She looked toward the door.
“The key.””
My stomach tightened.
“What key?””
Elena took a shaky breath.
“When we married, you gave me that ring. But a few months later, your father asked me to keep something inside it.””
I frowned.
“My father?””
Elena nodded.
“Before he died, he discovered that someone was stealing money from the family trust. He created a hidden archive containing the original documents.””
I leaned forward.
“Where?””
“He told me the key would be hidden inside my wedding ring. The archive was stored somewhere only he and I knew about.””
I stared at her.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because your father made me promise not to reveal it unless I had proof that someone had taken control of the company.””
I thought about the ring.
The small gold band had a tiny decorative engraving on the inside.
I had never noticed anything unusual.
“What's in the archive?””
“Original bank records. Hospital records. Adoption papers. And a list of everyone involved.””
I felt my pulse quicken.
“Does it include Daniel?””
Elena nodded.
“It includes his original hospital identification number.””
“Where is the archive?””
She closed her eyes.
“Under the old Hale estate.””
My father had owned a property outside the city.
It had been abandoned after his death.
I had planned to sell it several times, but Elena had always insisted that it remain untouched.
Now I understood why.
I stood.
“I'm going there.””
Elena grabbed my hand.
“Marcus, listen to me.””
I looked down.
“Vanessa doesn't want the money.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“She wants the archive destroyed.””
“Why?””
“Because the records don't just expose Richard. They expose someone much more powerful.””
“Who?””
Elena looked toward Ava, who was sleeping on a nearby sofa.
Then she whispered:
“Your father.””
I froze.
“My father is dead.””
“I know.””
“Then what are you saying?””
She swallowed.
“Your father wasn't the victim of a heart attack, Marcus.””
I stepped backward.
“What?””
“He discovered the child trafficking operation. He was going to report it.””
I stared at her.
“That's impossible.””
“He told me the night before he died.””
I remembered that night.
My father had called me twice.
I had been at a business dinner.
I never returned the calls.
The following morning, I received the news.
Heart attack.
Sudden.
Unexpected.
I had been devastated.
Elena continued.
“He knew Richard was involved. He also knew someone inside the family was helping him.””
“Who?””
She looked at me.
“Your mother.””
I couldn't speak.
My mother had died three years earlier.
A stroke, according to the medical report.
I remembered the funeral.
I remembered Vanessa standing beside Rebecca.
I remembered my father and mother being buried in the same family cemetery.
Elena reached for my hand.
“Marcus, I didn't want to tell you until I had proof.””
I pulled away.
“Why would my mother be involved?””
“I don't know everything. But she knew about Daniel.””
I stared at the floor.
For years, I had believed my family was built on loyalty.
Now every memory seemed contaminated.
My father.
My mother.
My sister.
My wife.
My children.
Who could I trust?
Ava stirred on the sofa.
“Daddy?””
I immediately turned toward her.
“I'm here, sweetheart.””
She rubbed her eyes.
“Is Mommy okay?””
I knelt beside her.
“Yes.””
“Where's my ring?””
I blinked.
“What ring?””
Ava pointed toward Elena.
“Mommy's special ring. The one she said Daddy gave her.””
I looked at my daughter.
“Why?””
Ava climbed down from the sofa.
“Because I saw the lady take it.””
I frowned.
“You saw Vanessa?””
Ava nodded.
“She came into Mommy's room.””
“When?””
“Just now.””
I held her little hands.
“What did she do?””
Ava looked frightened.
“She said Mommy was going to sleep forever.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
“She put something in Mommy's cup.””
I turned toward the bedside table.
A half-empty plastic cup sat beside Elena's medication.
I picked it up.
“Did Mommy drink this?””
Ava shook her head.
“No. Mommy pushed it away.””
I looked at the nurse.
“Did you give my wife anything?””
The nurse shook her head.
“No. I hadn't administered any medication since the previous check.””
I smelled the cup.
Something bitter lingered beneath the water.
Elena's face changed.
“Marcus.””
I turned.
“What?””
“Don't let them take me back to sleep.””
The nurse immediately called the attending physician.
I handed her the cup.
“Have this tested.””
Then I looked at Ava.
“Sweetheart, did Vanessa say anything else?””
Ava nodded.
“She said Daddy would come with her when the lights went out.””
My stomach tightened.
“What lights?””
Ava pointed toward the ceiling.
“The big ones.””
I looked up.
The hospital lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then the entire corridor went dark.
Ava screamed.
Emergency lighting flickered on a second later.
I grabbed my daughter.
“Stay behind me!””
A heavy door slammed somewhere down the corridor.
Footsteps approached.
Fast.
A man's voice called out.
“Mr. Hale?””
I turned.
A security guard emerged from the darkness.
He held a flashlight.
“Sir, we need you to come with us.””
I tightened my grip on Ava.
“Why?””
“There's been an emergency.””
“What emergency?””
He looked toward Elena's room.
“Your wife has been transferred.””
My heart stopped.
“Transferred where?””
The guard hesitated.
Then he said something that made me realize Vanessa had planned this long before the engagement party.
“She's been discharged, sir.””
I stared at him.
“Who authorized that?””
He handed me a document.
At the bottom was my signature.
My full name.
Marcus Andrew Hale.
I looked at it.
I had never signed it.
But the signature was perfect.
Almost perfect.
Because beneath it was a small handwritten note.
Transfer approved by legal guardian.
And beside the note was the name of the person who had apparently authorized my wife's removal.
*Rebecca Hale.*
I slowly turned toward my sister.
She was standing at the end of the corridor.
Her face was expressionless.
Then she raised her hand.
In her palm was Elena's wedding ring.
“I'm sorry, Marcus,” she whispered.
Behind her, the elevator doors opened.
And inside stood Vanessa.
Holding a little boy's hand.
A boy with blonde hair.
A boy with a tiny crescent-shaped birthmark behind his left ear.
Elena's son.
My son.
Daniel.
May you like
Vanessa smiled at me.
“Hello, Marcus. I think it's time we finally discussed our family.””
