Chapter 7: The Secret My Father Buried

“REBECCA!””

My sister collapsed against the hospital wall.

A dark stain spread across her gray sweater.

Ava screamed.

Daniel began struggling against the guard.

Richard lowered his gun.

“Everyone stay calm.””

I dropped beside Rebecca.

“Look at me. Rebecca!””

She was breathing.

Barely.

I pressed my hand against the wound.

“Somebody get a doctor!””

Vanessa stepped over the fallen folder.

“Richard, we need to leave.””

He pointed the gun at me.

“Give me the key.””

I looked down at the small metal cylinder.

It was no bigger than my little finger.

I closed my fist around it.

“Let the children go.””

Richard laughed.

“You're still negotiating?””

Vanessa grabbed Daniel's arm.

“Come on.””

“No!”” Daniel screamed.

He kicked her shin.

She slapped him across the face.

I saw red.

“DON'T TOUCH MY SON!””

Richard fired another shot.

The bullet struck the wall inches from my head.

“Next one goes through you,” he said.

I slowly raised my hands.

The key remained hidden inside my palm.

“Fine.””

I stood.

“Take it.””

I moved toward him.

Richard extended his hand.

But as I reached the table, I deliberately knocked over the metal tray beside it.

Surgical instruments crashed onto the floor.

The sudden noise made everyone turn.

I threw the key toward the far end of the corridor.

Richard spun around.

“Get it!””

Vanessa released Daniel.

The guard carrying him loosened his grip.

Daniel slipped free and ran.

Straight toward me.

I caught him.

“Daddy!””

I wrapped one arm around him and grabbed Ava with the other.

Richard lunged toward the key.

Vanessa screamed.

“Don't let them escape!””

The hospital security alarm suddenly changed.

A loud announcement echoed through the corridor.

“Security lockdown. Armed intruder reported in the east wing.””

The fire doors opened.

Three hospital security officers rushed in from the opposite end.

Behind them were two uniformed police officers.

Richard raised his weapon.

One officer shouted.

“Drop it!””

Richard hesitated.

Then fired.

The officers returned fire.

He fell.

Vanessa screamed and ran toward the elevator.

But the second officer tackled her before she reached it.

“Get off me!””

She kicked and scratched.

“You have no idea who you're arresting!””

The officer twisted her arms behind her back.

“I know exactly who I'm arresting.””

I held both children close.

For the first time that night, I could breathe.

Then I looked down.

Rebecca was still on the floor.

A nurse rushed toward her.

“She's alive!””

They placed her on a stretcher.

As they wheeled her away, she reached for my hand.

“Marcus.””

I leaned down.

“I'm here.””

“The key...””

“I have it.””

She shook her head weakly.

“Not that one.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She swallowed.

“Your father left another key.””

Her eyes closed.

The nurse pushed the stretcher away.

I stood there holding my children, trying to understand what she meant.

Two hours later, Rebecca was in surgery.

Daniel and Ava were in a private hospital room with me.

Daniel sat quietly on the bed.

He hadn't spoken much since the shooting.

Ava was beside him, holding his hand.

“Are you really my brother?”” she asked.

Daniel nodded.

“Vanessa said I didn't have a sister.””

Ava frowned.

“That's silly. I'm your sister.””

Daniel almost smiled.

I sat beside them.

“Both of you are going to be safe.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Where's Mommy?””

I swallowed.

“She's at the hospital. We're going to find her.””

He looked down.

“Vanessa said if I talked about Mommy, she would send me away.””

I gently touched his shoulder.

“Listen to me, Daniel. Nobody is sending you anywhere.””

He studied my face.

“Do you promise?””

“I promise.””

He leaned against me.

I closed my eyes.

Four years.

Four years of missing birthdays, first words, scraped knees, bedtime stories, and little hands reaching for mine.

I had missed everything.

And I couldn't get those years back.

But I could protect the ones that remained.

A knock sounded.

A woman in a dark suit entered.

“Mr. Hale?””

I stood.

“Who are you?””

“Agent Sarah Mitchell, federal investigative task force. We need to speak with you.””

I looked at the children.

“Not now.””

She nodded.

“Of course. But there's something you need to know.””

“What?””

She placed a photograph on the table.

It showed my father standing outside a private medical facility.

Beside him was a younger version of Richard Cole.

And beside Richard stood my mother.

I stared at the picture.

“Where did you get this?””

“It was recovered from a storage unit connected to Vanessa.””

I looked at the date.

Four years before Daniel was born.

Agent Mitchell continued.

“Your father was involved in the operation initially. But according to several recovered documents, he later attempted to shut it down.””

I shook my head.

“Why?””

“He discovered that the organization was moving children without their parents' consent.””

I looked at Daniel.

My son was watching us.

I lowered my voice.

“Who killed my father?””

The agent hesitated.

“We believe it was someone inside his household.””

My stomach tightened.

“My mother?””

She nodded.

“Your mother was suspected of coordinating the operation after your father's death. But we have no proof that she was responsible for his murder.””

I looked away.

Agent Mitchell placed another document on the table.

“This is the original trust agreement.””

I read the first page.

Then the second.

And the third.

A clause near the bottom caught my attention.

It stated that if both parents died or became legally incapacitated, the family trust would transfer control to the children's appointed guardian.

I looked up.

“Who was appointed?””

The agent turned the page.

My stomach dropped.

*Vanessa Cole.*

“She was appointed guardian four years ago,” Agent Mitchell explained.

“The document was filed after your son's supposed death.””

I stared at the signature.

My father's name appeared at the bottom.

But something was wrong.

The document was dated six months after he died.

I pointed at it.

“This is forged.””

Agent Mitchell nodded.

“We believe so.””

I looked at the final paragraph.

It contained a sentence that made my blood run cold.

The appointed guardian shall retain authority over all assets until the youngest surviving heir reaches adulthood.

I read it twice.

Vanessa hadn't simply wanted to marry me.

She wanted control of my children.

And if she controlled my children, she controlled the trust.

Agent Mitchell closed the folder.

“Mr. Hale, we found something else in Vanessa's apartment.””

“What?””

“A second birth certificate.””

I stared at her.

“For whom?””

She hesitated.

Then answered:

“Your daughter, Ava.””

I felt the room tilt.

“What about her?””

“The certificate lists a different biological father.””

I looked at Ava.

My little girl was coloring a picture beside her brother.

I lowered my voice.

“Who?””

Agent Mitchell turned the paper toward me.

May you like

The name printed beneath the father's section was:

*Richard Cole.*
