Chapter 8: The Truth About My Baby
I didn’t sleep that night.
I sat on the couch until sunrise, staring at the photograph.
Daniel.
Claire.
A courthouse.
My mind kept searching for an explanation.
Any explanation.
But every possible excuse had disappeared.
Because the truth was no longer hidden.
It was sitting in front of me.
My husband had a backup plan.
A life after me.
A future where I was simply a temporary chapter.
The next morning, I called the number attached to the email.
A woman answered.
“Emily?””
My heart tightened.
“Who is this?””
“My name is Claire.””
I almost hung up.
Almost.
But something stopped me.
“Why did you send me that?””
Silence.
Then:
“Because you deserve the truth.””
I gripped the phone.
“You were with my husband.””
“Yes.””
“Were you still together when we got married?””
“No.””
Her answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
I didn’t know whether to believe her.
“Then why the courthouse?””
Claire exhaled.
“Because Daniel asked me to meet him there.””
“Why?””
“He wanted information.””
“What information?””
“About your grandmother’s estate.””
My stomach dropped.
“He was using you too?””
A bitter laugh came through the phone.
“Yes.””
For the first time, Claire didn’t sound like an enemy.
She sounded like another victim.
“He told me he loved me,” she said.
I closed my eyes.
“He told me you were only staying with him because you felt sorry for him.””
The words hurt.
Not because they were true.
Because they were another lie.
“He said he was going to leave you.””
“When?””
“After the baby was born.””
I looked down at my stomach.
At my daughter.
My little girl.
“Why?””
“Because he thought once the baby existed, you would be too emotionally attached to fight him.””
I felt sick.
The room became silent.
Then Claire said something that changed everything.
“Emily, there’s something else.””
“What?””
“Daniel wasn’t only planning to divorce you.””
I waited.
“He was planning to claim you were mentally unstable.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He wanted full control.””
I couldn’t speak.
“He said nobody would believe you because you had become emotional during pregnancy.””
My hands tightened.
The cruelty was almost impossible to understand.
They weren’t just taking my money.
They were preparing to take my voice.
I contacted my lawyer immediately.
The following week moved like a storm.
Meetings.
Documents.
Evidence.
Truth after truth.
Robert provided records.
Claire provided messages.
Messages where Daniel discussed me like I was a problem.
Like I was an obstacle.
Then came the confrontation.
The four of us sat in a lawyer’s office.
Daniel.
Patricia.
Me.
And Robert.
Daniel looked exhausted.
Patricia looked angry.
She leaned forward.
“You’re destroying this family.””
I looked at her.
“No.””
My voice was steady.
“You did that.””
She scoffed.
“You think you’re better than us now?””
“No.””
I looked at Daniel.
“I think I finally stopped being less important than everyone else.””
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“Emily, please.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to ask for another chance because your plan failed.””
His face collapsed.
“I made mistakes.””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“You made choices.””
The lawyer placed documents on the table.
“The evidence is clear.””
Patricia looked nervous.
“What happens now?””
The lawyer answered calmly.
“The trust remains protected. Emily retains full ownership rights. Any attempt to access the funds through deception will be investigated.””
Daniel stared at the papers.
Then quietly asked:
“Do you really hate me?””
I looked at him.
And surprisingly…
I didn’t.
“No.””
He looked up.
“I don’t.””
A tear fell from his eye.
“Then why?””
I took a breath.
“Because loving you almost destroyed me.””
Nobody spoke.
As we left the office, Robert stopped me.
“There’s one last thing your grandmother wanted you to have.””
I looked at him.
“One last thing?””
He handed me a small envelope.
My name was written on it.
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
The final letter.
May you like
And the first sentence made my heart stop.
“Emily, if you are reading this, it means the person you married was not the person you thought he was…”
