Chapter 2: The House That Was Never Theirs
Nobody spoke after Robert’s revelation.
The only sound was the faint ticking of the grandfather clock near the hallway.
Tick.
Tick.
Tick.
It felt like the entire house was waiting.
Patricia was the first one to recover.
She laughed.
A sharp, nervous laugh.
“Robert, this isn’t funny.””
He didn’t smile.
“I’m not joking.””
Daniel looked between his parents.
“What are you talking about?””
Robert opened the folder and removed a document.
“Your mother told everyone this house belonged to her because she inherited it from her parents.””
Patricia’s face tightened.
“And it does.””
“No,” Robert said.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“It never did.””
I watched Patricia’s confidence disappear.
For the first time that night, she looked afraid.
“Robert.””
“No, Patricia. Tonight ends this.””
Daniel stood.
“You’re making no sense.””
His father looked at him.
“Do you know whose name is on the original deed?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Robert turned the paper around.
“Emily’s.””
My breath caught.
“What?””
Everyone looked at me.
I felt like the floor had shifted beneath my feet.
“That’s impossible,” Daniel said.
Robert shook his head.
“No. What’s impossible is that your mother managed to hide this for three years.””
I stared at the document.
My name.
My full legal name.
Printed clearly.
I couldn’t understand.
“Why would my name be on this house?””
Robert looked at me with sadness.
“Because your grandmother trusted me.””
The room changed.
Suddenly, I wasn’t just the woman who had been slapped at dinner.
I was someone holding a missing piece of a story.
A story everyone else knew except me.
“What does my grandmother have to do with this?”” I asked.
Robert sat down.
“When your grandmother passed away, she left instructions.””
Patricia interrupted.
“She was confused at the end.””
Robert looked at her.
“She was smarter than anyone in this room.””
The words hit harder than shouting.
Patricia’s mouth closed.
Robert continued.
“She knew exactly what kind of person you were.””
Patricia looked away.
My stomach tightened.
“Wait,” I said.
“Are you saying my grandmother knew Patricia?””
“Yes.””
The room went silent again.
Robert looked at me.
“Your grandmother and I were business partners many years ago. This property was purchased together. But after she became ill, she worried about what would happen.””
“What did she worry about?””
Robert’s eyes moved toward Patricia.
“She worried someone would take advantage of her family.””
I looked at Daniel.
He looked uncomfortable.
“Dad, this is ridiculous.””
Robert shook his head.
“No, Daniel. What’s ridiculous is that your wife paid your debts while you helped your mother pretend this house belonged to her.””
My blood went cold.
Daniel froze.
Patricia looked at him.
“What did he just say?””
I realized something.
Daniel had never told his mother.
About my money.
About the debt.
About how much I had sacrificed.
And suddenly, I wondered why.
Robert looked at me.
“Emily, how much did you give him?””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Dad.””
But Robert ignored him.
“How much?””
My throat tightened.
“Almost forty thousand dollars.””
Patricia turned slowly toward her son.
“Forty thousand?””
Daniel looked away.
“You said it was a temporary loan.””
I laughed.
A broken, quiet laugh.
“No.””
Everyone looked at me.
“You said we were building a future.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Not now.””
“No,” I said.
“Actually, now is exactly when we talk about it.””
Patricia stared at her son.
“You used her money?””
Daniel became defensive.
“She’s my wife.””
That sentence hurt more than I expected.
Because he didn’t say:
“I needed help.””
He didn’t say:
“I was wrong.””
He said:
“She’s my wife.””
Like being married to me meant he was entitled to everything I had.
Robert slowly gathered the documents.
“There is more.””
Patricia’s eyes narrowed.
“What more?””
Robert looked at her.
“The second secret.””
Daniel swallowed.
“What secret?””
Robert placed another paper on the table.
“This house was never the only thing your grandmother left behind.””
I felt my heartbeat increase.
“What else?””
Robert looked directly at me.
“An account.””
Daniel frowned.
“What account?””
Robert’s answer made everyone freeze.
“A trust fund.””
Patricia’s face turned pale.
Because she knew.
May you like
Somehow…
she knew exactly what he was talking about.
