Chapter 4: The Secret Behind The Marriage
Robert called me the next morning.
“Emily, you need to see something.””
I almost refused.
I was tired.
Tired of secrets.
Tired of discovering that every person I trusted had a hidden side.
But something in his voice made me agree.
He met me at his office.
On the desk was an old file.
My name was written on the front.
“What is that?””
Robert looked uncomfortable.
“Your grandmother asked me to keep this until you were ready.””
I opened it.
Inside were letters.
Old letters.
Written in my grandmother’s handwriting.
My hands shook as I read the first page.
Emily,
If you are reading this, something has happened that made you question the people around you.
My heart tightened.
The next lines were worse.
Trust actions, not words. Some people are very good at pretending to love you while preparing to use you.
I stopped reading.
Because suddenly, every warning made sense.
Robert watched me quietly.
“Your grandmother investigated Daniel before your wedding.””
My head snapped up.
“What?””
“She was worried.””
“About Daniel?””
“Yes.””
I felt sick.
“Why?””
Robert hesitated.
“Because she discovered he had financial problems before he met you.””
I stared at him.
“That doesn’t mean anything.””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“But what happened after mattered.””
He showed me another document.
A payment record.
A debt settlement.
My name was not there.
But Daniel’s was.
“He knew about your inheritance.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
Robert nodded.
“Before he proposed.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“No.””
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
I stood up.
“No, Daniel loved me.””
Robert didn’t argue.
That hurt more.
Because part of me wanted him to.
I wanted someone to tell me I was wrong.
But nobody did.
That night, I confronted Daniel.
He came over after receiving my message.
When he walked in, he already looked nervous.
“You found out.””
Not an apology.
Not denial.
Just acceptance.
I stared at him.
“How long?””
He looked down.
“How long what?””
“How long did you know about my grandmother’s money?””
Silence.
Then:
“Since before we got married.””
The room spun.
I grabbed the chair behind me.
“You knew?””
“I didn’t marry you for money.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
He didn’t answer.
“Why, Daniel?””
Finally, he whispered:
“Because I knew you would leave.””
The honesty destroyed me.
“You knew it was wrong.””
“I was going to fix everything.””
“By lying?””
He looked desperate.
“I loved you.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Tears burned my eyes.
“You loved what I could save.””
He reached for me.
I stepped back.
“Don’t.””
For the first time, Daniel looked afraid.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Afraid.
Because he realized something.
The woman who always forgave him was gone.
Then my phone rang.
It was Robert.
I answered.
His voice was urgent.
“Emily, you need to come back here.””
“What happened?””
A pause.
Then:
“Patricia found out about the trust.””
My heart sank.
“And?””
“She’s trying to challenge it.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course she was.
But Robert wasn’t finished.
“There’s something else.””
“What?””
His voice dropped.
“Daniel signed something.””
I felt cold.
“What did he sign?””
A long silence.

Then Robert said:
“A document proving he planned to divorce you after gaining access to your inheritance.””
