Chapter 7: The Woman Behind The Secret

I spent the entire night staring at that name.

Claire Matthews.

A stranger.

A stranger who somehow existed in my marriage before I even became Daniel’s wife.

The next morning, I sat across from Robert at a quiet coffee shop near his office.

Neither of us spoke for several minutes.

Finally, I pushed the paper toward him.

“Who is she?””

Robert looked exhausted.

“I was hoping you wouldn’t have to find out this way.””

“That sentence usually means the truth is worse.””

He didn’t argue.

“Claire worked with Daniel.””

“Where?””

“At his old company.””

I frowned.

“The company that failed?””

“Yes.””

I remembered those years.

The late nights.

The excuses.

The stress.

Daniel coming home saying investors had abandoned him.

Saying everything was falling apart.

“He told me he was alone,” I whispered.

Robert looked down.

“He wasn’t.””

The coffee in front of me went cold.

“What happened?””

Robert took a breath.

“Daniel and Claire were close.””

“How close?””

He hesitated.

“Too close.””

I stared out the window.

Suddenly, memories I had ignored came rushing back.

The unexplained phone calls.

The password change on his laptop.

The way he would turn his screen away when I entered the room.

The nights he said he was working late.

I had convinced myself every time.

Because I loved him.

Because I trusted him.

Because believing the truth was too painful.

“Did he cheat on me?””

Robert was quiet.

That was enough.

I closed my eyes.

The pain wasn’t sharp.

It was heavy.

Like something I had carried for years without knowing its name.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“I tried.””

I looked at him.

“When?””

“Before the wedding.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“I called your grandmother.””

I stared.

Robert continued.

“She already knew.””

My grandmother knew.

Again.

The woman who had protected me even after death.

“What did she say?””

Robert smiled sadly.

“She said, ‘Emily has to choose her own life. But make sure she has a way out if she needs one.’”

Tears filled my eyes.

Because suddenly I understood.

The trust wasn’t just about money.

It was about freedom.

That afternoon, I contacted a lawyer.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because I wanted protection.

For myself.

For my baby.

For the daughter who would one day ask me why I stayed.

And I wanted to be able to answer honestly.

I didn’t.

Three days later, Daniel showed up at my mother’s house.

This time, he wasn’t angry.

He looked desperate.

“Emily, please.””

I stood behind the door.

“What?””

“Can I come inside?””

“No.””

He looked hurt.

Good.

For once, I wanted him to understand what it felt like to be shut out.

“I know about Claire,” I said.

His face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“You talked to my father.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You did.””

He went silent.

That was all I needed.

“You were going to let me marry you while another woman was still part of your life.””

“It wasn’t like that.””

“Then tell me what it was like.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Finally, he whispered:

“It ended.””

“When?””

Another silence.

“Daniel.””

“Before the wedding.””

I laughed.

A painful sound.

“So you lied.””

“I was scared.””

“You were scared?””

My voice rose.

“I was seven months pregnant when your mother attacked me.””

He looked down.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

I stepped closer.

“You know what happened to you. You don’t know what happened to me.””

His eyes filled.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology came too late.

Years too late.

“I need you to understand something,” I said.

“What?””

“I don’t hate you.””

He looked surprised.

“I don’t.””

I swallowed.

“But I finally see you.””

That hurt him.

More than anger would have.

Because there was nothing he could argue against.

He left quietly.

That night, I received an email from an unknown sender.

No subject.

Only one attachment.

I opened it.

A photograph appeared.

It was Daniel.

Standing outside a courthouse.

With Claire.

And below the picture was one sentence:

“He wasn’t planning to leave you after the inheritance.””

My hands shook.

May you like

I read the next line.

“He was planning to leave you after the baby was born.””
