Chapter 8: The Voice From Twenty Years Ago

The recording was played in silence.

Nobody sat.

Nobody moved.

They stood around the conference table as if movement might somehow change what they were about to hear.

The police had recovered the device from the hidden compartment beneath Thomas’s old car.

A place nobody knew existed.

A place Victor never found.

The audio began with static.

Then breathing.

Then Thomas’s voice.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

After twenty years, she heard him again.

“Evelyn, if you’re hearing this…”

The sound broke slightly.

“I’m sorry.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

His father’s voice was older than he remembered.

More tired.

“I don’t know what Victor will do. I don’t know if I’ll have time to stop him.””

A pause.

“But I know one thing.””

The recording crackled.

“I never signed anything transferring Hart Hotels.””

Evelyn looked at the document Madison had brought.

The fake contract.

Thomas continued.

“Victor created papers. He pressured people. He tried to make me believe I was powerless.””

A deep breath.

“But there is proof.””

Everyone leaned closer.

“The original agreement is hidden somewhere only Evelyn would find.””

Daniel looked at his mother.

The recording continued.

“Because Evelyn always told me the same thing.””

Thomas’s voice softened.

‘A person who builds something from nothing knows where every brick belongs.’

Evelyn started crying silently.

Madison looked down.

“He loved you.””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

She was listening.

“There is one more thing.””

Thomas’s voice became serious.

“Victor did not act alone.””

The room froze.

Evelyn looked up.

“What?””

The recording continued.

“He had help.””

A name was not spoken.

Only one sentence.

“The person closest to us knows.””

The audio ended.

Silence followed.

Daniel looked around the room.

The implication was terrifying.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

Someone who knew Evelyn and Thomas.

Madison whispered:

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Later that evening, Evelyn walked alone through the oldest part of the hotel.

The original building.

The place where everything began.

She ran her hand along the wooden walls.

Thomas’s words echoed.

Every brick.

Every corner.

Every memory.

Then she stopped.

The old employee hallway.

The one she used to clean.

The one where she first met Thomas.

A memory surfaced.

Thomas once gave her a small wooden box.

He told her:

“Someday, when you forget how far you’ve come, open this.””

She had forgotten.

Because after his death, she had buried everything connected to that time.

Evelyn rushed to the storage room.

Behind an old shelf, she found a loose panel.

Inside was the wooden box.

Her hands shook as she opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Old letters.

And one key.

Attached was a note.

Not from Thomas.

From someone else.

The handwriting was familiar.

Her own assistant’s handwriting.

Evelyn stared.

Impossible.

Her assistant had been working for her for fifteen years.

Then why was her handwriting on something hidden twenty years ago?

The note said:

*I kept my promise. Now you must keep yours.*

Evelyn heard footsteps behind her.

She turned.

Her assistant stood there.

Holding tears back.

“Mrs. Hart…”

Evelyn looked at the note.

“What did you do?””

The assistant closed the door.

May you like

And whispered:

“I’m the reason Thomas died.””
