Chapter 4: The Door She Should Not Have Opened

Madison did not sleep that night.

Neither did Daniel.

The engagement party ended without another word.

Guests left quietly, carrying the memory of broken porcelain and a family secret they were never supposed to hear.

By midnight, Daniel sat alone in his apartment.

The ring box was still on the table.

The engagement ring inside looked different now.

Like something expensive that had lost its meaning.

When Madison arrived, she knocked softly.

Daniel opened the door but did not invite her in.

“I didn’t steal anything,” she said immediately.

He looked tired.

“That’s your opening sentence?””

“Because it’s true.””

“Then tell me what is true.””

Madison swallowed.

“My father asked me to look.””

“For what?””

“I don’t know.””

Daniel stared.

“You broke my mother’s cup because you didn’t know?””

She looked ashamed.

“No.””

“Then why?””

Madison sat down.

“Because I thought if I embarrassed her enough, she would finally admit something.””

“What?””

“That she lied.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You keep saying that, but you never say what lie.””

Madison looked at him.

“My father told me Evelyn stole from him.””

Daniel was silent.

“And you believed him?””

“I wanted to.””

That answer hurt more than anything else.

Because it was honest.

Madison continued.

“My whole life, I watched him struggle. I watched people judge him. I wanted someone to prove he wasn’t the villain.””

Daniel looked away.

“So you chose my mother.””

“No.””

“You chose revenge.””

Madison had no response.

The next morning, Evelyn arrived at her office before sunrise.

She walked through the empty hotel corridors.

The same corridors where she had once carried cleaning supplies.

The same floors she had polished herself.

She entered her private office.

Nothing looked disturbed.

Too perfect.

That worried her.

Criminals usually left chaos.

Smart criminals left comfort.

Her assistant entered.

“We checked everything.””

“And?””

“Only one file was accessed.””

Evelyn turned.

“Which one?””

The assistant hesitated.

“The original ownership contract.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

The contract was the one thing she had protected for decades.

Because it contained the truth about Hart Hotels.

And because it contained something else.

Something nobody knew.

Not Daniel.

Not Madison.

Not even Victor.

A secret Thomas had asked her to keep.

“Find the backup,” Evelyn said.

“There’s a problem.””

“What?””

“The backup was deleted.””

Evelyn stared.

Impossible.

Only three people knew where it was stored.

Her.

Thomas.

And Victor.

But Thomas was dead.

Victor was old.

And Madison…

The door opened.

Daniel walked in.

Behind him stood Madison.

Evelyn immediately understood.

“What are you doing here?””

Madison looked nervous.

“I need to tell you something.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“She came because she found something.””

Evelyn looked at Madison.

“What?””

Madison slowly reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this inside my father’s office.””

Evelyn took it.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of Thomas Hart.

Standing beside Victor Cole.

And beside them was another person.

A woman Evelyn had never seen before.

But Daniel recognized her.

His face changed.

“Mom…”

“What?””

“That woman.””

He pointed at the photograph.

“She was at my father’s funeral.””

Evelyn stared.

“No.””

Daniel nodded.

“She told me she was an old friend.””

Evelyn turned the photograph over.

There was writing on the back.

A date.

And a sentence.

Her hands went cold.

May you like

Because the handwriting was Thomas’s.

*If anything happens to me, find Eleanor. She knows what Victor did.*
