Chapter 3: The Secret in the Contract

Evelyn had not heard Thomas’s name spoken aloud in years.

Not like that.

Not printed on a document that should not exist.

For a moment, the rooftop disappeared.

She was no longer sixty-eight years old.

She was twenty-nine again.

A young widow-to-be standing in a hospital hallway, holding a newborn Daniel while doctors told her there was nothing more they could do.

Thomas had been gone for twenty years.

But his handwriting was still something she recognized.

The curve of his T.

The sharp ending of his signature.

The tiny habit of underlining important words.

Her hands trembled.

“Where did you get this?”” she asked.

Madison hesitated.

That hesitation told Evelyn everything.

“You didn’t find this,” Evelyn said.

Daniel looked at Madison.

“Who gave it to you?””

Madison looked away.

“Answer me,” Daniel said.

Her voice became defensive.

“My father.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“So your father has been feeding you information about my mother.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

Madison shook her head.

“He wanted me to understand the truth.””

Evelyn laughed quietly.

It was not a happy sound.

“Your father never cared about truth.””

She took the document.

She studied every line.

The agreement claimed Thomas had secretly transferred ownership shares of Hart Hotels to Victor Cole years before his death.

If real, it meant Evelyn’s entire company was built on stolen assets.

If fake, someone had created a very dangerous weapon.

“Your father wants my company,” Evelyn said.

Madison’s face changed.

“You’re accusing him?””

“I’m recognizing him.””

Daniel looked exhausted.

“Mom, please explain.””

Evelyn sat down.

For the first time that evening, she looked older.

“Your father and Victor were friends.””

She stared at the document.

“They started together. But Victor wanted everything quickly. He didn’t understand that businesses are built slowly.””

Madison interrupted.

“My father worked just as hard as you did.””

“Yes,” Evelyn said.

“But he also cut corners.””

Daniel listened carefully.

“What happened?””

Evelyn looked toward the city.

“Victor falsified numbers. He hid debts. When I discovered it, I removed him from the company.””

Madison’s expression hardened.

“You destroyed him.””

“No.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“He destroyed himself.””

The wind moved across the rooftop.

Then Daniel asked quietly:

“What does my father have to do with this?””

Evelyn froze.

She had avoided this question for years.

Because Thomas had died before he could answer it.

“Your father knew,” she said.

“Knew what?””

“That Victor was trying to come back.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I wanted you to remember your father as your father.””

The answer hurt him.

He looked away.

Madison softened slightly.

“Daniel…”

But he stepped back.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“You brought fake documents to our engagement party.””

“I brought evidence.””

“You destroyed my mother’s memory.””

“I was angry.””

“You were performing.””

Madison’s eyes filled.

“Do you know what it feels like to grow up hearing someone say your father ruined everything?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because he understood pain.

But he also understood cruelty.

Evelyn stood.

“Madison, why did you really come here tonight?””

Madison looked at her.

“I wanted you to admit what you did.””

“What did I do?””

Madison opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

Because she had no answer.

A phone rang.

Everyone looked around.

It was Evelyn’s assistant.

She answered.

“Hello?””

Her face changed.

“What?””

Daniel immediately noticed.

“What happened?””

Evelyn ended the call.

“The company servers were accessed.””

Silence.

“What?”” Daniel asked.

“Someone downloaded confidential files.””

Margaret stepped closer.

“Evelyn…”

Evelyn looked at Madison.

Because suddenly everything connected.

The folder.

The broken cup.

The distraction.

Madison’s face went pale.

“You think I did that?””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

That was worse.

Daniel looked at his fiancée.

And then at the documents in his hand.

“Madison…”

She whispered:

“I didn’t know.””

But before anyone could respond, a new message appeared on her phone.

She looked down.

Her blood ran cold.

May you like

The message was from her father.

*You did your part. Now bring me the original contract from Evelyn’s office.*
