Chapter 7: The Man Who Came Smiling
Victor Cole entered Evelyn’s office like a man returning home.
That was what angered her most.
Not his confidence.
Not his expensive suit.
Not the silver hair and charming smile he wore like armor.
It was the way he looked around the room as if he belonged there.
As if the walls remembered him.
“Evelyn.””
His voice was warm.
Almost friendly.
She stared at him.
“You have some nerve coming here.””
Victor smiled sadly.
“I expected anger.””
“You expected correctly.””
Daniel stood beside his mother.
For the first time in his life, he looked at Victor differently.
Not as Madison’s father.
Not as an old family friend.
As a suspect.
Victor noticed.
“Daniel.””
Daniel said nothing.
Victor’s smile faded slightly.
“I see you’ve heard some stories.””
“Stories?””
Daniel stepped forward.
“My father’s death.””
Victor sighed.
“There it is.””
He looked at Evelyn.
“You always did know how to turn people against me.””
Evelyn laughed.
“Still pretending you’re the victim?””
Victor sat down without permission.
“That’s exactly why I came.””
“No,” Evelyn said.
“You came because you’re worried.””
Victor looked at her.
“About what?””
“About what Thomas left behind.””
For the first time, Victor’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Evelyn saw it.
She had spent decades negotiating with powerful people.
A tiny reaction could reveal everything.
“You found something,” Victor said.
Daniel noticed.
“You knew there was something.””
Victor leaned back.
“Your mother is emotional. She’s connecting things that aren’t connected.””
Madison stepped forward.
“Dad.””
Victor looked at her.
A warning passed between them.
Evelyn noticed.
“You used your daughter.””
Madison flinched.
Victor smiled.
“Careful.””
“No.””
Evelyn’s voice hardened.
“You sent her into my family because you didn’t want to get your hands dirty.””
Victor looked disappointed.
“I thought you were smarter than this.””
Madison looked at her father.
“Did you know what I was doing?””
Victor didn’t answer.
That was the answer.
Madison’s face collapsed.
“You told me I was helping prove the truth.””
“You were.””
“You knew about the documents.””
“Yes.””
“You knew they were fake?””
Silence.
The room went still.
Madison looked at her father.
“You knew?””
Victor stood.
“Madison, emotions are clouding your judgment.””
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“You lied to me.””
Victor’s expression hardened.
“I gave you an opportunity.””
“To destroy someone?””
“To protect our family.””
Madison laughed bitterly.
“Our family?””
She looked at Evelyn.
“I ruined everything because of you.””
Victor stepped toward her.
“Don’t be dramatic.””
That sentence changed something.
Because Madison had spent years trying to earn his approval.
And suddenly she realized she never had it.
She was a tool.
Nothing more.
Daniel watched her.
For the first time, he felt sympathy.
Not forgiveness.
But sympathy.
Victor turned back to Evelyn.
“You have something Thomas left.””
Evelyn said nothing.
“I want it.””
“No.””
Victor smiled.
“You don’t understand.””
“I understand perfectly.””
He walked closer.
“You built an empire. But empires fall.””
Evelyn looked him directly in the eyes.
“Not mine.””
Victor leaned in.
“Everyone has a weakness.””
Then he looked at Daniel.
Evelyn’s expression changed.
“Don’t.””
Victor smiled.
“There it is.””
The room froze.
“You still protect him.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Leave.””
Victor ignored him.
“Thomas was weak because he loved people more than power.””
Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.
“And you were weak because you loved power more than people.””
For the first time, Victor looked angry.
Then he smiled again.
“I’ll see you soon.””
He turned toward the door.
Before leaving, he looked at Madison.
“You’re coming with me.””
Madison didn’t move.
“No.””
Victor stopped.
“What did you say?””
“I said no.””
The silence was absolute.
Victor stared at his daughter.
Then walked away.
After he left, Madison whispered:
“He’s going to destroy everything.””
Evelyn looked at her.
“No.””
She looked at the letter.
“He already tried.””
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed instantly.
“What?””
Everyone looked at him.
He slowly lowered the phone.
“The police found something.””
“What?””
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
“They found my father’s old car.””
A pause.
“And inside it…”
His voice disappeared.
“What?”” Evelyn asked.
May you like
Daniel looked terrified.
“Inside it was a recording.””
