Chapter 9: The Family That Lied
Robert arrived at the cabin alone.
No excuses.
No defense.
Just exhaustion.
Claire had never seen him look older.
He stood in the doorway while everyone watched.
“Tell them.””
Margaret’s voice came from behind him.
Everyone turned.
She looked different.
Smaller.
Broken.
“Tell them everything, Robert.””
Daniel stared.
“Dad?””
Robert closed the door.
Then sat down.
“The man in the video was my father.””
Claire understood.
The family tree was becoming a graveyard.
“He knew about Emily.””
Robert nodded.
“He knew everything.””
Daniel looked furious.
“You both knew?””
“I did.””
The answer was immediate.
No denial.
No excuse.
Daniel stepped back.
“How long?””
“Since the beginning.””
The silence was unbearable.
Claire watched her husband’s face.
The pain was not about the affair anymore.
It was about realizing his entire life had been built on lies.
“Why?”” Daniel asked.
Robert looked down.
“Because your grandfather believed our family name mattered more than people.””
“And you agreed?””
“No.””
Robert’s voice cracked.
“I was afraid.””
Margaret laughed softly.
“Afraid.””
Everyone looked at her.
“You were always afraid.””
Robert looked at his wife.
“And you were always cruel.””
That was the first time Claire saw Margaret lose control.
“What did you say?””
“You heard me.””
Robert stood.
“I should have told Daniel years ago.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Why didn’t you?””
Robert’s eyes filled.
“Because your mother threatened to take everything.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You chose money over me.””
“No.””
Robert looked at him.
“I chose fear over courage.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Lily asked:
“What happened to my mother?””
Robert looked at her.
And Claire knew the answer would hurt.
“She was alive.””
Lily stopped breathing.
“Where?””
Robert hesitated.
“She was taken away.””
“By who?””
Robert looked toward Margaret.
Margaret closed her eyes.
“Your grandfather.””
Claire felt sick.
The mystery finally had a shape.
Emily didn’t disappear.
She was erased.
Daniel grabbed the table.
“Where is he?””
Robert whispered:
“He died three years ago.””
Nobody moved.
Then Lily shook her head.
“No.””
“What?””
“He didn’t die.””
Robert looked confused.
“What are you talking about?””
Lily pulled out her phone.
She showed them a picture.
A recent picture.
An old man standing outside a hospital.
Alive.
Claire stared.
“Who took this?””
Lily answered:
“My mother.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Your mother is alive?””
Lily nodded.
“She’s been alive this whole time.””
A million emotions crossed Daniel’s face.
Hope.
Fear.
Pain.
Then Lily added:
“But she doesn’t want to see you.””
Daniel looked destroyed.
“Why?””
Lily looked at him.
“Because she believes you chose them.””
Claire felt that sentence hit harder than anything else.
Because maybe he had.
Not intentionally.
But he had.
He had accepted the story because it was easier than fighting for the truth.
Then Claire’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone stared.
She answered.
A woman’s voice whispered:
“Claire?””
Her entire body froze.
She knew that voice.
Not because she had heard it before.
Because she had heard it in the recording.
Emily.
“I need your help.””
Claire couldn’t speak.
Emily continued:
“Because Margaret wasn’t the person who tried to kill me.””
A pause.
Then:
“It was your mother.””
Claire’s blood turned cold.
“My mother died eight years ago.””
May you like
Emily whispered:
“She didn’t.””
