Chapter 5: The Daughter Nobody Knew
Claire sat in her car for almost an hour.
She couldn’t cry.
She couldn’t scream.
She could only stare at the windshield and feel her entire understanding of Daniel collapse.
A daughter.
Eleven years ago.
Before their marriage.
Before she knew him.
Before he promised her forever.
When she finally returned home, Daniel was waiting.
He knew immediately.
“You found out.””
Claire walked past him.
“Who is she?””
Daniel looked down.
“Claire…”
“Who is she?””
His voice broke.
“Her name is Lily.””
The name was soft.
Too soft.
A name that belonged to a child.
“Where is she?””
Daniel sat down.
“She’s alive.””
Claire closed her eyes.
The affair.
The lies.
The family secrets.
All of it suddenly felt connected.
“Why did everyone think she died?””
Daniel looked toward the window.
“Because that’s what my family told me.””
Claire stared.
“What?””
Daniel’s hands shook.
“When Emily disappeared, she left Lily with someone she trusted.””
“Who?””
He looked at Claire.
And she saw the answer before he said it.
“Your mother.””
Claire felt the air leave her lungs.
“My mother?””
Daniel nodded.
“Emily was your mother’s patient.””
The world became silent.
Claire stepped back.
“No.””
“Claire—”
“No.””
She shook her head.
“My mother died eight years ago.””
“I know.””
“Then how could she—”
A knock interrupted them.
Daniel froze.
Claire turned toward the door.
Nobody was expected.
Slowly, she walked closer.
Another knock.
Then a woman’s voice came from the other side.
A voice Claire had never heard before.
“Claire Bennett?””
She opened the door.
A young woman stood there.
Maybe eighteen.
Maybe nineteen.
Her eyes were familiar.
Terrifyingly familiar.
She looked past Claire.
Straight at Daniel.
May you like
And whispered:
“Dad.””
