Chapter 4: The Second Lie
Claire did not confront Daniel immediately.
That surprised everyone.
Including herself.
For years, she had believed love meant asking questions.
But questions only worked when people wanted to answer.
So she watched.
She watched Daniel avoid his phone.
She watched Margaret whisper behind closed doors.
She watched Vanessa leave the house alone two days later.
And she watched Robert secretly meet someone at a coffee shop.
That was when Claire followed him.
Robert sat across from an older woman with gray hair.
The woman pushed a folder across the table.
Claire stood outside the window, unable to hear everything.
But she saw Robert’s face.
Shock.
Fear.
Regret.
Then the woman pointed toward the folder.
Robert shook his head.
“No. Claire cannot know.””
Claire’s heart stopped.
Cannot know.
Not won’t.
Cannot.
She entered the café.
Robert looked up.
His face drained.
“Claire.””
The woman stood.
“Who are you?””
The woman looked at her with sad eyes.
“My name is Laura Carter.””
Claire felt cold.
Carter.
Emily Carter.
“Are you related to Emily?””
The woman nodded.
“She was my daughter.””
The room spun.
Claire looked at Robert.
“What are you hiding?””
Robert closed his eyes.
“Everything.””
Laura pushed the folder toward Claire.
“Your husband didn’t cause Emily’s disappearance.””
Claire opened the folder.
Inside were police reports.
Newspaper clippings.
And one document that made her blood run cold.
A birth certificate.
Not Emily’s.
Someone else’s.
Someone connected to Daniel.
Claire looked up.
“What is this?””
Laura whispered:
“The child Daniel was told died eleven years ago.””

“Child?””
