Chapter 2: The Name They Buried
Claire did not sleep that night.
She sat in the guest room with the door locked, one hand resting on her stomach while the other held the wedding ring she had removed.
Outside, rain tapped against the window.
Inside, her entire marriage felt like a stranger’s house.
At 3:17 a.m., someone knocked.
“Claire?””
Daniel.
She ignored him.
“Please.””
Still nothing.
“I know you hate me.””
A bitter smile crossed her face.
Hate was easy.
Grief was harder.
“Claire, open the door.””
“No.””
The hallway became quiet.
Then Daniel spoke softly.
“I never stopped loving you.””
Claire closed her eyes.
The words hurt because part of her still wanted to believe them.
“You loved me while you were sleeping with someone else.””
“I was confused.””
“No.””
Her voice sharpened.
“You were comfortable.””
Silence.
Then:
“I made a mistake.””
Claire stood and opened the door.
Daniel looked exhausted.
For one second, she saw the man she married.
The man who used to dance with her in the kitchen.
The man who held her during miscarriages before this pregnancy.
Then she remembered Vanessa.
“You didn’t make one mistake, Daniel.””
She stepped closer.
“You made thousands.””
His eyes dropped.
“I know.””
“No. You don’t.””
She pointed toward the dining room.
“Your family knew.””
Daniel looked away.
That answer hurt more than she expected.
“How long did your mother know?””
“She found out a few months after it started.””
Claire stared.
“And she helped you hide it?””
Daniel didn’t respond.
That was enough.
The next morning, Claire packed a small bag.
Not because she had forgiven him.
Because she needed space to think.
As she walked downstairs, Margaret was waiting.
“You’re leaving?””
Claire looked at her.
“You sound surprised.””
Margaret folded her arms.
“I thought we could talk like adults.””
Claire almost smiled.
“You protected your adult son while he betrayed his pregnant wife.””
Margaret’s expression hardened.
“You don’t know the whole story.””
“Then tell me.””
A pause.
Margaret looked toward the hallway.
Then she whispered:
“Daniel’s affair was never the thing we were afraid of.””
Claire froze.
“What?””
Margaret’s face turned pale.
“You need to leave before he tells you.””
“Before who tells me?””
Margaret didn’t answer.
The front door suddenly opened.
Robert walked in holding a thick brown envelope.
His hands were shaking.
“Claire.””
She looked at the envelope.
“What is that?””
May you like
Robert swallowed.
“The reason this family has been lying to you for eleven years.””
