Chapter 8: The People Behind the Lie

I looked at the photograph again and again.

Vanessa.

Nathan.

Together.

Outside a law office.

The date was printed in the corner.

Three months before Zoria received her scholarship.

Three months before everything collapsed.

I looked at both of them.

Neither spoke.

Because silence was confirmation.

“You were working together.””

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Nathan looked away.

“Daniel—”

“No.””

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

“You both knew.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“I didn’t know what Nathan was planning.””

“But you met him.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She hesitated.

Nathan answered.

“Because we were trying to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

“Protect me?””

Nathan stepped forward.

“You don’t understand.””

“No. I understand perfectly.””

I pointed toward the photograph.

“You two decided what my daughter deserved to know.””

Nobody argued.

That was the worst part.

I walked toward Nathan.

“What did you do?””

He looked tired.

Like he had been carrying something for years.

“I tried to fix a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

His jaw tightened.

“Your mistake.””

Again.

That accusation.

I was tired of it.

“Tell me everything.””

Nathan sat down.

And finally, he did.

Eight years earlier, when Elena and I fought, Nathan had been there.

Not physically.

But involved.

Elena had called him after leaving.

She told him she was afraid.

She told him she needed time.

Nathan admitted he convinced her not to come back immediately.

“Why?””

I asked.

He looked ashamed.

“Because I thought you were hurting her.””

“And?””

“And because I was angry at you.””

The honesty shocked me.

“Why were you angry?””

Nathan looked down.

“Because Dad always chose you.””

That answer made no sense.

Our father had died years ago.

“What does that have to do with Zoria?””

“Everything.””

He explained.

Our father had left behind a small investment account.

Something I had forgotten about.

Something that had grown over the years.

The money was meant for family.

But Nathan believed I had taken control of everything.

“I thought you were selfish.””

“So you ruined my family?””

“No.””

His voice broke.

“I made a choice that I thought was right.””

“You kept a mother away from her daughter.””

“I thought you hated her.””

“I loved her.””

Nathan closed his eyes.

“I know that now.””

Vanessa spoke quietly.

“And I made it worse.””

Everyone looked at her.

She wiped her tears.

“When Zoria got the scholarship, I found out Elena’s name was attached.””

I stared.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you were afraid.””

She nodded.

“Because Lily had just failed an important exam. She was already convinced she wasn’t good enough.””

“So you took Zoria’s scholarship.””

“I thought if Lily received it…”

“You thought you could make them equal.””

Vanessa looked down.

“Yes.””

Nobody spoke.

The truth was ugly.

But at least it was finally real.

Then Zoria stood.

“I need to ask something.””

Everyone turned.

She looked at Nathan.

“Did you know?””

Nathan nodded.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“Did you know I thought my mother didn’t love me?””

Nathan couldn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Zoria walked upstairs.

I wanted to follow.

But I stopped.

Because sometimes children need space to process the damage adults create.

Later that night, I found another envelope.

It was hidden inside the old folder from the scholarship foundation.

My name was written on it.

Not Zoria’s.

Mine.

Inside was a letter.

From my father.

The first line made my blood freeze.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, then someone has finally told you the truth about the night Elena left.

I kept reading.

My father had known.

He had known Nathan was angry.

He had known Elena was being pushed away.

And he had written something that made my hands shake.

I need you to understand something.

The person you should fear most is not the one who leaves.

It is the one who convinces you they left.

I stopped reading.

Because there was one final sentence.

One name.

The person my father believed had started everything.

And it wasn’t Nathan.

It wasn’t Vanessa.

May you like

It was someone else.

Someone who had been beside me the entire time.
