Chapter 2: The Folder With Her Name On It
The officer stepped inside after I invited him in.
His name was Officer Grant.
He didn’t look angry.
He didn’t look suspicious.
That somehow made everything worse.
People who came with bad news usually carried emotion with them.
He carried paperwork.
And paperwork meant facts.
Vanessa remained standing near the window.
She wouldn’t look at me.
That was unusual.
My wife had always been confident. Even during arguments, she had a way of turning the conversation around until somehow I was apologizing.
But now?
She looked like someone waiting for a verdict.
Officer Grant placed the folder on the table.
“I want to make sure we handle this carefully,” he said.
I nodded.
“Handle what?””
He looked at Zoria.
“Your daughter received the Hamilton Academic Foundation Scholarship, correct?””
“Yes.””
“And she recently submitted a withdrawal request?””
I looked at Zoria.
She nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Did you personally write that request?””
She hesitated.
“No.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What?””
Zoria looked down.
“I filled out part of it.””
Officer Grant opened the folder.
“But the final submission was completed by another person.””
Vanessa immediately spoke.
“Is this really necessary? It was a family matter.””
Officer Grant turned toward her.
“Mrs. Carter, the scholarship committee received concerns regarding the circumstances of the withdrawal.””
My heartbeat increased.
“What concerns?””
He removed a document.
“Before I explain, I need to ask something important. Mr. Carter, were you aware that your daughter was considering giving up this scholarship?””
“No.””
“Were you informed before the withdrawal was submitted?””
“No.””
Officer Grant looked at Vanessa.
“Were you?””
Vanessa folded her arms.
“I was helping her.””
“That wasn’t my question.””
The room became colder.
“Yes,” Vanessa answered.
“And did you contact the scholarship foundation on her behalf?””
Vanessa’s silence lasted only a second.
But it was enough.
I stared at her.
“You did?””
“Daniel, I was trying to help.””
“You called them?””
“I wanted to understand the process.””
Officer Grant looked back at the papers.
“That call is actually why we opened a review.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
Just slightly.
But I noticed.
“What did you tell them?”” I asked.
“Nothing important.””
Officer Grant corrected her.
“Mrs. Carter, the recording indicates you stated that your daughter was experiencing emotional distress because the scholarship created conflict within your household.””
My hands curled into fists.
“And?””
He continued.
“You also stated that Zoria wanted to withdraw because she believed the scholarship was causing harm to her stepsister.””
I looked at my daughter.
“Did you ever say that?””
Zoria shook her head.
“No.””
Vanessa turned.
“Zoria—”
“No,” my daughter whispered.
The room went silent.
“I didn’t want to give it up.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“You told me you understood.””
“I said I didn’t want Lily to be sad.””
“That’s the same thing.””
“No, it isn’t.””
Those words came quietly.
But they were powerful.
Because Zoria had never challenged Vanessa before.
Not once.
Officer Grant glanced between them.
“Mrs. Carter, the foundation has strict rules about scholarship withdrawal. The decision must be voluntary and made by the recipient.””
“I never forced her.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“You just convinced her.””
“I was her parent.””
“So was I.””
Her face tightened.
“You’re acting like I’m some villain.””
I stepped closer.
“I’m acting like you took something from my daughter because someone else wanted it.””
“That’s not fair.””
“Fair?””
I pointed toward the scholarship papers.
“Fair was Zoria earning it.””
Vanessa looked at Lily’s framed school photo on the shelf.
“She was hurting.””
I shook my head.
“And Zoria wasn’t?””
No answer.
Officer Grant closed the folder.
“There is something else you need to know.””
Vanessa immediately looked at him.
“Do we really need to discuss everything?””
“Yes.””
The officer pulled out another paper.
“The scholarship was not simply withdrawn.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What does that mean?””
“The foundation received a request to transfer consideration of the award.””
I frowned.
“To who?””
Officer Grant looked down.
Then back at me.
“To Lily Carter.””
The room went completely silent.
I felt like someone had punched the air out of my lungs.
I turned toward Vanessa.
She didn’t deny it.
She couldn’t.
“You tried to give Zoria’s scholarship to Lily?””
Vanessa whispered.
“It wasn’t like that.””
“It was exactly like that.””
Officer Grant placed the document on the table.
“There is one more issue.””
He tapped the page.
“And this is the reason I needed to speak with both of you.””
I stared at the paper.
“What issue?””
The officer looked directly at Vanessa.
“The signature on this request…”
May you like
He paused.
“Does not belong to Zoria.””
