Chapter 5: The Truth Everyone Hid

Zoria stood at the top of the stairs.

She had heard everything.

I knew because the moment she saw the woman standing in our living room, her face changed.

Not recognition.

Confusion.

Pain.

“Dad?””

I turned around.

“Sweetheart…”

Her eyes moved between me and Elena.

“Who is she?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Because some truths are too heavy to say.

Finally, Elena whispered:

“I’m your mother.””

Zoria’s expression didn’t change.

That was the terrifying part.

She just stood there.

Like her mind had stopped.

“You’re…”

Her voice cracked.

“You’re Elena?””

The woman nodded.

“Yes.””

The silence afterward was unbearable.

“I thought you were never coming back.””

Elena’s eyes filled.

“I know.””

“No,” Zoria said.

Her voice became stronger.

“You don’t know.””

Everyone froze.

“You don’t know what it felt like.””

Elena looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

“Sorry?””

Zoria laughed once.

A painful sound.

“You missed birthdays.””

“I know.””

“You missed every award ceremony.””

“I know.””

“You missed when I got my first A.””

Elena covered her mouth.

“I know.””

“Then why are you here now?””

That question destroyed the room.

Elena looked at the folder.

“Because I saw what happened.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Don’t do this.””

Zoria looked at her.

“Do what?””

Vanessa immediately softened.

“Make this more painful.””

My anger returned.

“Vanessa, stop.””

Elena opened the folder.

“Zoria’s scholarship was never supposed to be withdrawn.””

She placed documents on the table.

“The foundation received a fraudulent request.””

Zoria looked confused.

“I didn’t understand.””

Elena looked at her.

“Someone attempted to transfer your scholarship consideration to another applicant.””

Zoria looked at Vanessa.

The silence said everything.

“Mom?””

Vanessa started crying.

“I was trying to help Lily.””

Zoria stepped back.

“I thought you loved me.””

“I do.””

“Then why did you make me give it away?””

Vanessa had no answer.

Because there was none.

Officer Grant explained the rest.

“The scholarship committee reviewed the evidence. The withdrawal request has been canceled. Your scholarship remains active.””

Zoria stared.

“Really?””

I smiled through tears.

“Really.””

For the first time in days, my daughter smiled.

A real smile.

Small.

Fragile.

But real.

Elena watched her.

“I know I don’t deserve forgiveness.””

Zoria looked at her.

“I don’t know if I can forgive you.””

Elena nodded.

“That’s fair.””

“But…”

Everyone waited.

Zoria swallowed.

“I want to know why.””

Elena cried quietly.

And then she told the truth.

She had left because she was afraid.

Afraid she was failing.

Afraid she couldn’t provide the life Zoria deserved.

But fear became distance.

And distance became years.

It wasn’t an excuse.

But it was the truth.

Later that evening, after everyone left, Vanessa and I sat alone.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

I looked at her.

“I believe you’re sorry.””

“Can we fix this?””

I thought about it.

About eight years of marriage.

About Lily.

About Zoria.

About the moment my daughter looked at me and asked if I hated her mother.

“I don’t know.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I understand.””

Before she left the room, she stopped.

“There’s something else.””

I looked up.

“What?””

She hesitated.

“When I signed the papers…”

My heart sank.

“What?””

“I wasn’t the first person who tried to interfere.””

I stood.

“What do you mean?””

She looked frightened.

“Someone else wanted Zoria to lose that scholarship.””

“Who?””

Vanessa reached into her bag.

Pulled out a photograph.

And placed it on the table.

My blood turned cold.

Because the person in the picture wasn’t Vanessa.

It wasn’t Lily.

It was someone I knew.

Someone who had been pretending to support Zoria all along.

May you like

And written on the back of the photograph were six words:

*She can never know what her father did.*
