Chapter 4: The Secret Behind the Scholarship
I didn’t sleep that night.
Not because I was angry.
Not even because I was confused.
Because Vanessa had said one word that changed everything.
Her mother.
Zoria’s biological mother had been gone for years.
Not dead.
Not missing.
Just gone.
When Zoria was six, her mother walked out of her life and never came back.
For years, I avoided speaking badly about her.
I told Zoria that adults sometimes made choices children couldn’t understand.
But I never imagined that woman would somehow be connected to a scholarship.
Or to Vanessa’s fear.
The next morning, Vanessa was already awake when I entered the kitchen.
She looked exhausted.
“We need to talk,” she said.
I poured coffee.
“No more half-truths.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
“Start with the scholarship.””
She took a deep breath.
“The Hamilton Scholarship has a special recognition program.””
“Meaning?””
“Meaning some recipients are selected because of their academic achievements and their personal history.””
I frowned.
“What does that have to do with Zoria’s mother?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Her mother created the foundation.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Years ago.””
“You knew this?””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
“I didn’t think it mattered.””
I laughed bitterly.
“It mattered when you tried to take the scholarship away.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Daniel, you don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She sat down.
“When Zoria applied, the foundation recognized her last name.””
I stared.
“So?””
“So her mother personally reviewed the application.””
My stomach tightened.
“And?””
Vanessa’s voice dropped.
“She wrote a letter.””
“What letter?””
“One explaining why she wanted Zoria considered.””
I couldn’t speak.
After all these years, the woman who abandoned my daughter had secretly been watching her.
Or at least watching from a distance.
“Why didn’t Zoria know?””
“Because I didn’t want her hurt.””
I stared at Vanessa.
“That’s your excuse?””
“She left. She didn’t deserve to suddenly appear when Zoria became successful.””
I hated that part of me understood the anger.
But understanding wasn’t forgiveness.
“You don’t get to decide what truth my daughter deserves.””
Vanessa looked away.
“There’s more.””
Of course there was.
“There always is.””
She reached into a drawer and pulled out an envelope.
“I found this after the scholarship announcement.””
I didn’t touch it.
“Why?””
“Because I was angry.””
“At Zoria?””
“At her mother.””
She pushed it toward me.
Inside was a letter.
The handwriting was elegant.
The first line made my hands shake.
Dear Zoria,
If you are reading this, it means you achieved something I always believed you could.
I stopped reading.
My chest felt heavy.
“She was going to contact her?”” I asked.
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you were afraid.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because if Zoria learned her mother was proud of her…”
Her voice broke.
“She might forgive her.””
There it was.
The real reason.
This was never about Lily.
Not completely.
Vanessa hadn’t just wanted to protect Lily’s feelings.
She wanted to control the story.
She wanted Zoria to continue believing the woman who left her didn’t care.
And somehow, taking away the scholarship had become part of that plan.
“You let your jealousy hurt a child.””
Vanessa cried.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
“That I would lose her.””
I looked toward the hallway.
Where my daughter had spent years trying to earn love from everyone around her.
“Vanessa, you didn’t lose her because of Zoria’s mother.””
She looked at me.
“You lost her because you made Zoria choose between her dream and your approval.””
She had no answer.
That afternoon, Officer Grant returned.
But he wasn’t alone.
A woman stood beside him.
Older.
Nervous.
Holding a folder against her chest.
My heart immediately knew.
Even before anyone spoke.
Zoria was upstairs.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked terrified.
The woman stepped forward.
“Daniel?””
“Yes?””
“My name is Elena.””
The room went silent.
“I’m Zoria’s mother.””
Before I could respond, Vanessa whispered:
“No…”
Elena looked at her.
“I think we need to discuss what happened to my daughter’s scholarship.””
And then she opened the folder.
May you like
Inside was a document.
A document Vanessa had never expected anyone to find.
