Chapter 9: The Family That Lied Beneath the Crown

Maya could hear the ballroom beyond the security office.

Music played. Guests talked. Glasses clinked.

The Halloween Queen competition was still underway, even as her entire understanding of her family collapsed around her.

She looked at Richard.

“You believed Dad was dead?””

Richard nodded slowly.

“Vanessa told me he had died before I arrived at the hospital.””

“But the recording shows you standing beside him.””

“I left the workshop before the ambulance arrived. Vanessa told me she would call for help. She said she had already contacted the hospital.””

Maya's voice shook.

“And you believed her?””

“I was wrong.””

“That's all you have to say?””

“No.”” Richard swallowed.

“It's not enough. Nothing I say can make it right.””

Maya stared at him.

“Then tell me what happened.””

Richard took a deep breath.

“The night Daniel collapsed, I went to the hospital after receiving a call from Vanessa. She said he had suffered a heart attack and that there was nothing the doctors could do.””

“Was he dead?””

“No. He was unconscious, but alive.””

Maya gripped the back of a chair.

“Then why did you say you thought he was dead?””

“Because Vanessa told me the hospital had declared him beyond recovery. She said the doctors were preparing to remove life support.””

Maya felt sick.

“Dad wasn't on life support.””

Richard shook his head.

“Not at that point. I learned later that he had been admitted to intensive care. Vanessa kept telling me he was dying, that there was no chance he would recover.””

“And the papers?””

Richard lowered his eyes.

“Vanessa said Daniel had already agreed to transfer the design before he collapsed. She told me the documents only needed my signature as a witness.””

“You signed them after he was hospitalized?””

“Yes.””

“Without speaking to him?””

“Yes.””

Maya closed her eyes.

The man who had taught her never to sign anything she didn't understand had been betrayed by his own brother.

“And when did you find out the signature was forged?””

“Three days later. I saw the hospital records. Daniel had never been conscious after the night he collapsed. The authorization was dated the following morning.””

Maya's hands trembled.

“What did you do?””

Richard looked at her.

“Nothing.””

The answer was so quiet that it almost disappeared beneath the hum of the air conditioner.

“I was afraid Vanessa would expose my own involvement in the financial transfers. I convinced myself I could repair the damage privately. I bought the design, hoping to keep it from being sold to someone else.””

“And you never contacted me.””

“No.””

“Not once.””

“No.””

Maya felt tears slipping down her cheeks.

“You let me believe Dad had abandoned me with nothing. You let Vanessa take the workshop. You let her tell everyone I was a burden.””

Richard's eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

“You knew what she was doing.””

“Yes.””

“And you did nothing.””

Richard lowered his head.

“Yes.””

Maya turned away.

She had wanted an explanation.

She hadn't expected it to hurt this much.

Evelyn stepped between them.

“Mr. Sterling, I need you to understand that your statements may be relevant to the investigation. You should speak with an attorney and provide all the records you possess.””

“I will,” Richard said.

“All of them.””

Vanessa laughed sharply.

“How noble. The guilty man finally wants to confess.””

Richard looked at her.

“You told me Daniel had approved the sale.””

“He would have approved it eventually.””

“You told me he was dying.””

“He was dying!””

“You told me the company would collapse if I didn't sign.””

“It would have!””

Richard's voice rose.

“You lied about everything!””

Vanessa took a step toward him.

“And you signed the papers anyway. Don't pretend you're innocent now.””

Maya watched them argue.

For the first time, Vanessa had lost control of the conversation.

She couldn't charm her way out of it. She couldn't dismiss every question as jealousy. And she couldn't make Maya believe that the truth was too complicated for her to understand.

The security chief raised a hand.

“That's enough. Both of you will provide formal statements to the authorities.””

Vanessa turned toward Maya.

“You're enjoying this, aren't you?””

Maya wiped her cheeks.

“No.””

“Don't lie to me.””

“I'm not enjoying anything. My father is dead. His work was stolen. And the people who were supposed to protect me spent two years hiding the truth.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“Your father made his own choices.””

“And so did you.””

For several seconds, neither woman spoke.

Then a knock sounded at the door.

An event coordinator entered, looking flustered.

“Ms. Brooks, I'm sorry to interrupt. The judges are ready to announce the finalists, but the audience is asking about the incident.””

Evelyn nodded.

“We'll handle it.””

The coordinator glanced at Maya.

“Miss Sterling, the judges have requested that you return to the ballroom. They want to speak with you before the final announcement.””

Maya hesitated.

“Why?””

“Mr. Cole says your presentation raised questions about the integrity of the competition, and he believes the judges need to address what happened.””

Vanessa let out a bitter laugh.

“Of course they do. She wants another opportunity to play the victim.””

Maya looked at her.

“No. I want to finish what I came here to do.””

She turned to Evelyn.

“I'll go.””

The security chief nodded.

“Two officers will accompany you.””

As Maya left the room, Chloe hurried toward her.

“Maya!””

Maya stopped.

Her stepsister looked exhausted. Her mascara had smudged beneath her eyes, and one of her white wings had come loose from its harness.

“I heard everything,” Chloe said.

Maya looked at her.

“Then you know what your mother did.””

Chloe nodded.

“I also know what I did.””

For a moment, Maya said nothing.

Chloe took a trembling breath.

“I gave security a statement. I told them about the plan to trip you, and I told them Mom asked me to keep quiet about the stolen design.””

“Why?””

“Because it's the first honest thing I've done all night.””

Maya studied her.

“Is that enough for you?””

“No.”” Chloe swallowed.

“But it's a start.””

Maya wanted to tell her that a start was not forgiveness. That one confession could not erase years of cruelty.

Instead, she said, “Then keep telling the truth. Even when it costs you something.””

Chloe nodded.

“I will.””

They entered the ballroom together.

The crowd quieted as Maya approached the stage. Hundreds of guests turned toward her, many still holding their phones.

Adrian Cole stood beside the judges' table.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” he announced, “before we proceed with the final results, we need to address a serious concern.””

He explained that a contestant's costume had been tampered with and that security had preserved relevant footage. He did not identify anyone as guilty, nor did he disclose the ongoing investigation.

“The judges will evaluate each presentation on its craftsmanship, originality, and artistic merit. No contestant will be penalized for reporting a safety concern.””

Applause broke out.

Maya stood beneath the lights, feeling strangely detached from the noise.

She had come to the competition hoping to win a crown.

Now she wanted something more difficult.

She wanted her father's name cleared.

She wanted his design returned.

And she wanted to stop living inside the story Vanessa had written for her.

Adrian invited Maya to stand beside the judges.

“Miss Sterling,” he said, “your work demonstrates extraordinary technical skill. But I would like to ask you one question.””

Maya nodded.

“Your costume is titled The Fallen Angel. What does it mean to you?””

She looked at her wings.

Then she looked at the audience.

“My father taught me that falling doesn't mean you've failed. Sometimes it means the ground has shown you what you need to rebuild.””

The room fell silent.

“When he died, I thought I had lost everything. Then people began telling me who I was, what I deserved, and what I was allowed to dream about. For a while, I believed them.””

She took a breath.

“But I made these wings with my own hands. I repaired every broken piece. And tonight, when someone tried to make me fall, I learned that I don't need to be unbreakable to stand again.””

A woman in the audience began clapping.

Then another.

Within seconds, the ballroom rose to its feet.

Maya stood motionless as the applause swept through the room.

She had never heard anything like it.

Not when she graduated.

Not when she completed her first design.

Not even when her father had praised her work.

The sound seemed to rise from every corner of the ballroom, surrounding her like a promise.

Across the room, Vanessa watched with a face emptied of color.

For the first time in years, Maya was receiving the recognition her stepmother had tried to deny her.

And nobody was asking Vanessa's permission.

The judges retreated briefly to finalize their scores.

Maya stepped away from the stage and found Adrian waiting near the curtain.

“You were remarkable,” he said.

“Thank you.””

“Whatever happens with the competition, I'd like to offer you a place in my atelier. A paid apprenticeship, with the opportunity to develop your own collection.””

Maya stared at him.

“Are you serious?””

“Completely. Your work deserves a professional platform.””

She felt a smile begin to form.

“I'd love that.””

“Then we'll discuss the details after tonight.””

He offered his hand.

Maya shook it.

For the first time, her future seemed to belong to her.

Then Evelyn approached with a tablet.

“Maya, there's one more thing you need to see.””

She showed Maya a photograph from the venue's loading dock.

Vanessa was standing beside a black vehicle, speaking to a man wearing a dark coat.

The man was holding a large envelope.

“Who is he?”” Maya asked.

“We're identifying him. He entered the building using a temporary access badge, then left through the loading area.””

“What was in the envelope?””

“We don't know yet.””

Evelyn swiped to another image.

It showed Vanessa handing the man a small object.

A silver key.

Maya's heart sank.

“The key to the crate.””

“Possibly. But there's something else.””

Evelyn enlarged the image.

The man had turned slightly toward the camera.

Maya recognized the face.

It was the private collector who had purchased the design from Richard.

The man who had supposedly agreed to cooperate.

“Why would he meet Vanessa?”” Maya whispered.

Evelyn's expression was grave.

“That's what we're investigating.””

Maya looked toward the stage.

The announcer was preparing to declare the winner.

But before he could speak, the ballroom doors opened.

Two officers entered, followed by a woman carrying a thick legal folder.

She approached Evelyn and handed her a document.

Evelyn read it.

Then she turned toward Maya.

“The collector has just filed an emergency claim of ownership over your father's design.””

Maya felt the blood drain from her face.

“He can't do that.””

“He can file a claim. Whether it's valid is another question.””

“What does he want?””

Evelyn's gaze hardened.

“He's demanding that the original be surrendered immediately.””

Maya looked toward the storage corridor.

The crate was still there.

The silver box was still hidden inside.

And someone had just decided to claim it before the truth could come out.

Then the announcer called her name.

“Maya Sterling, please return to the stage.””

Maya straightened her shoulders.

She had survived Vanessa's trap.

She had uncovered the stolen design.

She had finally heard her father's voice again.

Now she would face the next challenge in front of everyone.

May you like

Because if someone believed they could take her father's legacy away a second time, they were about to discover something Vanessa had never understood.

Maya Sterling was no longer the girl who stayed silent.
