Chapter 5: The Woman Who Sold Her Husband's Legacy

The lights returned thirty seconds later.

The ballroom erupted into confusion.

Guests stood, whispering to one another. Phones rose into the air as people tried to capture the confrontation. At the judges' table, Adrian Cole was speaking urgently to a technician while Evelyn Brooks ordered two security officers to remain near Vanessa.

Maya stood frozen backstage.

Her father's design had been sold.

Someone had stolen the one thing he had intended to leave her.

And Vanessa had known all along.

“Maya.””

Chloe appeared beside her, still wearing her enormous white wings.

“Come with me.””

Maya didn't move.

“Where?””

“Somewhere we can talk.””

“I think we've done enough talking tonight.””

Chloe's eyes filled with tears.

“Please. There's something you need to know.””

Maya looked toward the stage, where Adrian was collecting the scattered papers from his folder.

“Is it about the design?””

Chloe nodded.

“Then tell me here.””

Her stepsister glanced toward the nearby contestants.

“Not in front of everyone.””

Maya folded her arms.

“You didn't mind humiliating me in front of everyone when you thought I was going to lose.””

Chloe flinched.

“I know.””

“Did you know about the stolen design?””

Chloe pressed her lips together.

That was answer enough.

Maya felt something inside her harden.

“How long?””

“I found out three months ago.””

“Three months?””

Chloe looked down at her white shoes.

“Mom was meeting with a collector. I went into her office to get my purse, and I saw the documents on her desk.””

“What documents?””

“A sale agreement. It had Dad's name on it and a photograph of the wings.””

Maya struggled to breathe.

“And you said nothing?””

“I was scared.””

“Of what? Your mother?””

Chloe's face twisted.

“You don't know what it's like living with her.””

Maya stared at her.

“No, Chloe. I know exactly what it's like living with her. I've been doing it since Dad died.””

Chloe wiped her cheek.

“Mom said the design belonged to the company. She said Dad had created it while working for Sterling Couture, so it was company property.””

“Was it?””

“I don't know.””

“You didn't ask?””

“She said if anyone questioned the sale, the company could collapse. She said employees would lose their jobs. She said it would be my fault if we lost the house.””

Maya shook her head slowly.

“She made you afraid, and you let her use that fear against me.””

Chloe looked up.

“I know.””

For a moment, neither woman spoke.

Then Maya asked the question she had been avoiding.

“Did you know she planned to sabotage my costume?””

Chloe's silence stretched too long.

Maya stepped backward.

“You knew.””

“I knew she wanted you to fall. I didn't know someone had loosened your wing.””

“But you were willing to trip me.””

Chloe began to cry.

“I thought it would be harmless. I thought you would stumble, everyone would laugh, and then you would leave. I never imagined—”

“You never imagined what? That I might get hurt? That I might be humiliated? Or that people might finally see what your mother is?””

Chloe covered her face.

Maya looked away.

She wanted an apology that meant something. She wanted her stepsister to admit that the cruelty had been deliberate, that years of little insults and calculated exclusions hadn't been accidents.

Instead, Chloe kept crying.

And Maya realized that tears did not automatically make someone innocent.

“I'm going back to the ballroom,” Maya said.

Chloe caught her sleeve.

“Wait. There's something else.””

Maya pulled free.

“What?””

Chloe lowered her voice.

“Dad didn't leave the design with Mr. Cole.””

Maya stopped.

“What are you talking about?””

“Mom found the original after Dad died. She kept it in her private office.””

“Then why did Adrian say Dad entrusted it to him?””

“Because that's what Mom told him. She said she was arranging for it to be preserved.””

Maya's heart hammered.

“Where is it now?””

Chloe looked toward the ballroom entrance.

“I don't know. But last week, I heard Mom on the phone with someone. She said the original would be destroyed after the competition.””

Maya stared at her.

“Why would she destroy it?””

“Because someone is asking questions about the sale.””

A cold silence settled between them.

Maya had spent two years searching for her father's final design. She had believed it was lost forever.

Now she knew it might still exist.

And Vanessa intended to destroy it.

“Who was she speaking to?”” Maya asked.

“I couldn't hear the other person's name.””

“Try.””

Chloe closed her eyes.

“She said something about a warehouse. And a man named Richard.””

Maya's thoughts raced.

Richard Sterling was her father's younger brother. He had managed part of the family business before Daniel's death, then abruptly resigned after a dispute with Vanessa.

Maya hadn't seen him in more than a year.

She remembered calling him once, shortly after Vanessa took control of the workshop.

He had answered, listened to her explain what had happened, and promised to call her back.

He never did.

“Do you know where Uncle Richard lives?”” Maya asked.

Chloe shook her head.

“Mom says he moved overseas.””

Maya looked at her.

“Does he have?””

She stopped herself.

No.

She wasn't going to let another conversation turn into a collection of half-truths.

“Chloe, if you're serious about helping me, tell security everything you know.””

Chloe's eyes widened.

“Mom will never forgive me.””

“That's your decision.””

Maya turned and walked toward the ballroom.

She found Adrian near the judges' table, speaking with Evelyn.

When he saw her, he immediately stopped.

“Maya. I'm sorry you had to hear this in such a public way.””

“What exactly was in that folder?””

Adrian looked toward Evelyn.

The security chief nodded.

“We can speak here, but we need to preserve the original documents.””

Adrian opened the folder.

Inside were copies of a private sale agreement, several emails, and a photograph of the black wings Maya had seen in her father's notebook.

The buyer's name was printed across the top of the agreement.

Richard Sterling.

Maya stared at it.

“That's my uncle.””

Adrian nodded.

“According to this document, he purchased the design from Vanessa two years ago for $250,000. The agreement describes the wings as an original creation belonging to Sterling Couture.””

“But they weren't hers to sell.””

“That's the question we need to answer. The document contains Daniel's signature, but the signature appears on a transfer authorization dated three days after his death.””

Maya felt sick.

“Someone forged it.””

“Possibly. We need a forensic examination before drawing conclusions.””

Evelyn examined the paperwork.

“Where did you obtain these copies?””

“An attorney representing the private collector contacted me this afternoon. The collector believes the design may have been sold under false pretenses.””

Maya looked at Adrian.

“Why didn't the collector come forward sooner?””

“Because he didn't know the original creator was still alive or that the sale was disputed. He thought he was purchasing a legitimate design from a family business.””

“Who is the collector?””

Adrian hesitated.

“An investor named Richard Sterling's company works with. He has agreed to cooperate, but his attorney wants to verify the chain of ownership first.””

Maya's fingers curled around the edge of the table.

“Everyone keeps telling me what they think. I want proof.””

Evelyn nodded.

“That's reasonable.””

She turned to an officer.

“Preserve all footage from the west corridor and the loading entrance. Secure the technician's phone and obtain a statement about who hired him. Nobody leaves the venue with any evidence connected to this incident.””

The officer hurried away.

Maya took a deep breath.

“What happens to the competition?””

Adrian looked toward the stage.

“The judges can continue scoring, but the safety incident will be documented separately. Your presentation remains valid.””

“And Vanessa?””

“Security will speak with her.””

Maya almost laughed.

“She's been speaking her way out of trouble for years.””

As if summoned by the remark, Vanessa appeared beside them.

Two security officers followed at a discreet distance.

Her face was pale, but her posture remained perfect.

“Adrian,” she said, forcing a smile.

“I hope you're satisfied with the spectacle you've created.””

Adrian closed the folder.

“I didn't create it, Vanessa.””

“You've embarrassed my family in front of hundreds of people.””

Maya stepped forward.

“No. You did that yourself.””

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“You have no idea what you're talking about.””

“Then explain the sale agreement.””

Vanessa turned toward Adrian.

“You cannot seriously believe that document is authentic.””

“I believe it deserves investigation.””

“Daniel was my husband. I managed his affairs. I had every right to protect his work.””

“Did you have the right to sell it using a signature dated after his death?”” Maya asked.

Vanessa's lips parted.

For the first time that night, she had no immediate answer.

Then she looked at Maya with a hatred so naked that the people nearby fell silent.

“You ungrateful little girl.””

Maya didn't move.

“You have taken everything from me,” Vanessa continued.

“The workshop. The business. My father's designs. And now you want to take my reputation, too.””

“Your reputation is not mine to take.””

Vanessa raised her hand.

One of the security officers stepped between them before she could move any closer.

“Mrs. Sterling, please step back.””

Vanessa lowered her hand slowly.

Then she leaned toward Maya.

“You think winning a costume competition makes you powerful? You think these people care about you? The moment the lights go out, they'll forget your name.””

Maya looked at her stepmother.

“Maybe. But they'll remember what you did tonight.””

Vanessa's expression turned murderous.

“You have no idea what your father did to this family.””

Maya felt her stomach tighten.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa's mouth snapped shut.

Adrian looked at her sharply.

“Daniel never told Maya about the business dispute, did he?””

Vanessa glared at him.

“Stay out of this.””

“What business dispute?”” Maya demanded.

Neither answered.

Maya stepped closer.

“What did my father do?””

Vanessa straightened her gown.

“Ask your uncle.””

Then she turned and walked away with the security officers following her.

Maya watched her disappear into the crowd.

Her phone vibrated again.

This time, the message came from an unknown number with an attachment.

It was a photograph of a storage room filled with old costume pieces.

In the center stood a wooden crate.

On its side, in her father's handwriting, were the words:

THE FALLEN STAR — FOR MAYA.

A second message appeared beneath it.

Your father hid the original for a reason.

Maya stared at the photograph.

Then she noticed the timestamp.

The picture had been taken less than ten minutes ago.

Whoever had sent it knew where the original design was.

And they were inside the building.

She looked up, scanning the ballroom.

Across the room, Vanessa stood beside a tall man in a dark suit. He whispered something into her ear, then handed her a small silver key.

Vanessa closed her fingers around it.

And smiled.

Maya knew that smile.

It was the smile her stepmother wore whenever she believed she had won.

But this time, Maya saw something else.

May you like

A security camera above the judges' table was pointed directly at them.

And Evelyn Brooks was already watching the footage.
