Chapter 8: What My Father Saw Before He Died
Nobody spoke.
The words on the laptop screen seemed to fill the security office.
THE NIGHT DANIEL DIED.
Maya stared at the filename, barely able to breathe.
Her father had been gone for two years. She had mourned him, buried him, and spent countless nights wishing she could hear his voice one more time.
Now she was being offered a glimpse into the final hours of his life.
And the warning he had left behind suggested that someone had played a part in his death.
“Open it,” Maya whispered.
The technician looked toward Evelyn.
“Only if we preserve the original file and document the access.””
“Do whatever you need to do,” Maya said.
“Just show me.””
Evelyn placed a hand on her shoulder.
“We'll proceed carefully.””
The technician created a verified copy of the file, then opened it.
The recording began with a timestamp from two years earlier.
Daniel sat at his desk, his face drawn and tired. A stack of financial statements lay beside him. The familiar workshop surrounded him: rolls of fabric, metal frames, jars of buttons, and the little wooden stool Maya had used as a child.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he looked into the camera.
“My name is Daniel Sterling. I'm recording this because I no longer believe the people closest to me will tell the truth if anything happens to me.””
Maya's fingers curled around the edge of the table.
Daniel continued.
“Over the past six months, I've discovered that company funds have been diverted into private accounts. At first, I believed the transfers were mistakes. Then I found documents bearing my signature that I never authorized.””
He lifted a sheet of paper.
“This authorization allows the sale of my original design, The Fallen Star. I did not sign it.””
Richard lowered his head.
Daniel set the document down.
“Vanessa insists that the sale is necessary to protect the company. She claims the money will be returned. But the account records show that the funds are being transferred elsewhere.””
He paused and rubbed his forehead.
“I confronted her tonight. She denied everything. Then she told me I was becoming paranoid.””
Maya felt tears gather in her eyes.
That was exactly how Vanessa had treated her whenever she questioned something.
Daniel leaned closer to the camera.
“If you are watching this, Maya, I want you to remember that you are not responsible for what happened to me. Whatever you hear, whatever anyone tells you, none of this is your fault.””
Maya began to cry silently.
Then the recording changed.
The camera angle shifted, as though Daniel had moved it to capture the workshop door.
A shadow passed across the frosted glass.
Someone knocked.
Daniel stood.
“Come in.””
The door opened.
A man entered the room.
Maya leaned toward the screen.
She recognized him immediately.
Richard Sterling.
Her uncle.
In the recording, Richard looked younger, but his face carried the same deep crease between his brows.
“Daniel,” he said, “we need to talk.””
Daniel folded his arms.
“About the missing money?””
Richard glanced toward the camera.
“Turn that thing off.””
“No.””
“Daniel, please.””
“You're the one who told Vanessa about the investigation, aren't you?””
Richard looked stricken.
“I didn't know what she was doing at first.””
“But you knew eventually.””
“Yes.””
“And you still helped her.””
Richard rubbed his face.
“I thought I could stop it before anyone got hurt.””
Daniel's voice hardened.
“You helped her forge documents. You helped her move money. You helped her sell something that belonged to my daughter.””
“I was trying to save the company!””
“By sacrificing your niece?””
Richard said nothing.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Do you understand what you've done?””
“I can fix it.””
“No. You can tell the truth.””
Richard looked toward the door.
“Vanessa is coming.””
Daniel's face changed.
“What?””
“She knows about the recording. She wants the drive.””
Daniel moved toward the desk.
“Then she can come and explain herself.””
Richard caught his arm.
“You don't understand. She's desperate.””
Daniel pulled away.
“Let her be desperate.””
The recording shook as someone bumped the camera.
A second later, Vanessa entered the room.
She wore the same pearl earrings Maya remembered from family photographs.
Her expression was calm.
Almost gentle.
“Daniel,” she said.
“You should be resting.””
“Leave.””
Vanessa closed the door behind her.
“I only want to talk.””
“You've had months to talk.””
She glanced at Richard.
“Did you tell him?””
Richard looked away.
Vanessa sighed.
“You've always been too emotional, Daniel. That's why I handled the business decisions.””
“You stole from the company.””
“I borrowed money.””
“You forged my signature.””
“I protected our future.””
“You sold my daughter's inheritance.””
Vanessa's expression hardened.
“Maya is not prepared to inherit anything.””
“That's not your decision.””
“She is a child.””
“She is my daughter.””
“And what happens when you're gone?”” Vanessa asked.
The room fell silent.
Maya stopped breathing.
Daniel stared at his wife.
“What did you just say?””
Vanessa seemed to realize she had revealed too much.
Then she straightened.
“You're ill. You need to stop fighting and let me handle things.””
Daniel stepped toward the desk.
“Get out.””
Vanessa reached for the papers.
Daniel grabbed them first.
For several seconds, they struggled over the documents.
Then Richard intervened.
“Stop! Both of you!””
The camera jolted.
A sharp crash echoed through the room.
Daniel staggered backward, clutching his chest.
Maya screamed.
“Dad!””
The recording continued without sound from her.
Daniel collapsed against the desk, knocking a metal frame to the floor.
Richard rushed toward him.
“Daniel! Daniel, look at me!””
Vanessa stood frozen.
Then she backed away.
“Call an ambulance,” Richard shouted.
Vanessa looked at the papers scattered across the floor.
For one terrible second, she hesitated.
Then she reached down, picked up the unsigned authorization document, and slipped it into her handbag.
Maya covered her mouth.
On the screen, Richard knelt beside his brother, shouting for help.
Vanessa moved toward the door.
“Where are you going?”” Richard demanded.
“To get assistance.””
“Then go!””
She disappeared from the recording.
The video ended abruptly.
The security office remained silent.
Maya stared at the black screen.
Her father had collapsed in front of the people he trusted.
One had tried to help him.
The other had stolen the evidence while he lay dying.
“Did Vanessa call the ambulance?”” Maya whispered.
Richard looked devastated.
“She called from the hallway. I don't know how long she waited.””
“How long?””
“I don't know.””
Maya turned toward him.
“You were there. You were standing right beside him. How can you not know?””
Richard's voice cracked.
“Because I was terrified. I was terrified of losing the company, of being arrested, of what Vanessa would do if I told the truth. I watched my brother collapse, and all I could think about was protecting myself.””
Maya stepped backward.
For years, she had wondered why Richard had disappeared.
Now she knew.
He had been carrying the memory of his brother's final moments while allowing Maya to believe she had been abandoned by everyone.
Evelyn closed the laptop.
“This recording is evidence of potential financial fraud and possible evidence tampering. We need to contact the appropriate authorities and preserve the original files.””
Adrian nodded.
“I'll provide the documents from the collector and my correspondence with Daniel.””
Maya looked toward Evelyn.
“What happens now?””
“We investigate. The recording alone doesn't establish that Vanessa caused your father's death, but it raises serious questions about what happened afterward. Any medical records, emergency-call records, and related documents will need to be examined.””
Maya swallowed.
“I don't want anyone making accusations without proof. I just want the truth.””
Evelyn met her gaze.
“That's exactly what we're going to pursue.””
A security officer entered.
“Ms. Brooks, Mrs. Sterling is asking to speak with Maya. She says it's urgent.””
Maya looked toward the door.
“Tell her no.””
The officer hesitated.
“She says she has information about Daniel's final design.””
Maya's heart skipped.
Evelyn studied her.
“Do you want to hear what she has to say?””
Maya considered the question.
For most of her life, Vanessa had controlled every conversation. She had decided which questions were allowed, which memories were acceptable, and which truths were too dangerous to discuss.
Maya would not let her control this one.
“Yes,” she said.
“But with security present.””
A few minutes later, Vanessa entered the room.
Her red gown was slightly wrinkled, and her perfect smile had vanished. She looked at the laptop, then at the envelope on the table.
“You've been watching private recordings,” she said.
Adrian's voice was cold.
“They were found in a container you attempted to remove from the venue.””
“That container belongs to Sterling Couture.””
“The documents inside may belong to Maya,” Evelyn replied.
“And the financial records may be relevant to an investigation.””
Vanessa turned toward Maya.
“You have no idea what you've unleashed.””
Maya remained still.
“You knew Dad was investigating you.””
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
“He was sick. He wasn't thinking clearly.””
“He knew about the missing money.””
“He made accusations he couldn't prove.””
“He knew you sold his design.””
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
“Your father was obsessed with his work. He thought every sketch belonged to him personally. He couldn't understand that the company had rights.””
“Then why did you need a forged signature?””
Vanessa went silent.
Maya stepped closer.
“Why did you steal the papers while he was unconscious?””
Vanessa looked toward Evelyn.
“I will not answer questions without legal counsel.””
“That's your right,” Evelyn said.
“But you will remain available to investigators.””
Vanessa turned back to Maya.
“You think this makes you a hero? You're destroying your own family.””
Maya felt tears burn behind her eyes.
“No. I'm finally refusing to let you destroy me.””
Vanessa's face twisted.
“You should have stayed in your little workshop and kept your mouth shut.””
Maya didn't flinch.
“I'm done being afraid of you.””
For a moment, Vanessa seemed unable to understand the words.
Then she leaned close.
“You still don't know the worst part.””
Maya's pulse quickened.
“What worst part?””
Vanessa smiled without warmth.
“Your father wasn't the only person who signed those papers.””
Richard went pale.
“Vanessa, don't.””
She turned toward him.
“Why not? You've spent two years pretending you're innocent.””
Maya looked between them.
“What is she talking about?””
Richard's mouth opened, but no sound came out.
Vanessa straightened her shoulders.
“Ask your uncle why he signed the transfer authorization.””
Maya stared at Richard.
He looked as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.
May you like
Then, finally, he spoke.
“Because I believed Daniel was already dead.””
