Chapter 7: The Letter That Changed Everything
Maya stared at the bloodstained paper in Chloe's hand.
For a moment, the storage room seemed to tilt around her.
“Where did you get that?”” she asked.
Chloe closed her fingers around the paper.
“Mom's handbag.””
Maya stepped toward her.
“You went through her things?””
“I saw her put it inside when she thought nobody was watching. Then she left her bag near the judges' table.””
“Why would she have something like this?””
Chloe's eyes filled with tears.
“Because she knows what happened to Dad.””
Maya felt her stomach twist.
“Tell me everything.””
Chloe looked toward the open doorway, checking that the security officer was still in the hallway.
“After you left the ballroom, Mom called someone. She said the crate had to be removed before security opened it. Then she told them the original papers were still inside.””
“What papers?””
“I don't know. But she said if anyone found them, the company would be finished.””
Maya took the bloodstained paper.
It was a torn corner of a document. Her father's signature appeared at the bottom, written in dark ink.
Above it were fragments of a sentence.
...transfer of ownership shall remain invalid unless witnessed by...
The rest had been ripped away.
“This is about the sale agreement,” Maya whispered.
Chloe nodded.
“I think so.””
Maya looked at her stepsister.
“Why are you helping me now?””
Chloe flinched as though the question hurt more than she expected.
“Because I saw the footage.””
“What footage?””
“The ballroom cameras. Mom thought nobody would notice her talking to that technician, but security showed me part of the recording.””
Maya's eyes narrowed.
“You saw her tell you to trip me.””
Chloe looked down.
“Yes.””
“And?””
“And I saw myself agreeing.””
Her voice broke.
“I watched it, Maya. I watched myself stand there while Mom told me to hurt you. I kept telling myself it was just a harmless prank. But when your wing almost collapsed, I realized I could have caused something terrible.””
Maya didn't answer.
Chloe wiped her cheeks.
“I know saying sorry doesn't fix it.””
“No, it doesn't.””
“I know you don't trust me.””
“I don't.””
Chloe nodded slowly.
“But I can still help you find the truth.””
Maya studied her for a long moment.
Then she held out the torn document.
“Do you know what this means?””
“No.””
“It means someone knew the sale agreement was invalid. They had a reason to hide the original paperwork.””
Chloe looked toward the crate.
“Could the rest be inside?””
“I think so.””
They examined the wooden lid together.
The lock was still attached, but the silver key was gone with Richard Hale, who had been taken to the security office for questioning.
Maya ran her fingers along the edge.
“Dad always hid things in places people wouldn't think to look.””
“Like where?””
Maya remembered the little black notebook.
The unfinished sketches.
The silver crescent he drew beside his signature.
She crouched and examined the crate's inner lining through the narrow gap. The wood had been covered with silver-colored fabric, now faded and frayed.
At the corner, she noticed a loose seam.
“Chloe, hold the lid steady.””
Chloe obeyed.
Maya carefully slipped her fingers beneath the fabric and pulled back a small section.
A thin metal compartment had been fitted into the wood.
Inside lay a black flash drive and a sealed envelope.
Maya's hands shook.
“That's it,” she whispered.
Chloe stared.
“What?””
“I think this is what Dad wanted me to find.””
Maya reached for the envelope.
Before she could open it, footsteps sounded in the hallway.
The security officer returned.
“Miss Sterling, I'm afraid you'll need to step away from the crate. Ms. Brooks has requested that we secure the area.””
Maya rose immediately.
“Of course.””
The officer glanced at Chloe.
“Are you supposed to be here?””
Chloe straightened.
“I came to speak to my sister.””
“Then you'll need to return to the ballroom.””
Maya looked at the envelope in her hand.
“Can I take this to Ms. Brooks?””
The officer hesitated.
“If it's connected to the investigation, she'll need to document it first.””
Maya nodded.
“Then let's go.””
They returned to the security office together.
Evelyn stood beside a long table covered with printed photographs and incident reports. Adrian Cole was there as well, speaking with a man Maya recognized from the Sterling family business.
Richard Sterling.
Her uncle.
He was taller than she remembered, with silver at his temples and a deep crease between his brows. His expensive suit looked rumpled, as though he had spent the evening fighting a battle he hadn't expected.
When he saw Maya, his face went pale.
“Maya.””
She stopped several feet away.
“Uncle Richard.””
He glanced at the envelope in her hand.
“Where did you find that?””
“Inside a crate marked with my father's handwriting.””
Richard closed his eyes briefly.
“Then it's finally happening.””
Maya's voice sharpened.
“What is happening? Why did you buy Dad's design? Why did you disappear after he died? And why is Vanessa trying to destroy the evidence?””
Richard looked toward Evelyn.
“May we speak privately?””
“No,” Maya replied.
“You had two years to speak privately. Now you can answer me here.””
Adrian moved beside her.
“She's entitled to answers.””
Richard rubbed his forehead.
“Daniel was investigating financial irregularities at Sterling Couture. He discovered that money had been transferred out of the company without proper authorization.””
Maya frowned.
“Who took it?””
Richard hesitated.
“Vanessa.””
Chloe covered her mouth.
Maya felt a cold wave pass through her body.
“How much?””
“Over two million dollars across several accounts.””
“Why didn't Dad report her?””
“He was gathering evidence. He wanted to confront her with the complete records rather than make an accusation he couldn't prove.””
Maya looked at the flash drive.
“Is this evidence?””
Richard nodded.
“Possibly.””
“Then why did you buy the design?””
His face tightened.
“Vanessa approached me after Daniel died. She said the design belonged to the company and that she needed money to cover a financial emergency. She offered to sell it to me.””
“You knew she was lying?””
“I suspected the transfer documents were questionable. But I was afraid of what would happen if the company collapsed. Hundreds of employees depended on it.””
“So you paid her anyway.””
Richard lowered his head.
“Yes.””
Maya felt anger rise so quickly that her hands began to shake.
“You didn't protect the employees. You protected yourself.””
Richard looked at her.
“I thought I could buy the design and keep it safe until I found out the truth.””
“And then you disappeared.””
“Vanessa threatened to expose me as a co-conspirator if I challenged the sale. She had documents showing that I had authorized certain transfers years earlier. I was afraid she would use them to destroy me.””
Maya stared at him.
“So you let her destroy me instead.””
Richard had no answer.
The silence was worse than any excuse.
Evelyn stepped forward.
“Mr. Sterling, do you have documentation of these threats?””
“I have emails. Some were deleted from my company account, but I saved copies.””
“Can you provide them?””
“Yes.””
Maya placed the envelope on the table.
“Then we have more than one piece of evidence.””
Evelyn carefully opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter dated two days before Daniel's death.
The writing was unmistakable.
Richard,
I know you've discovered the transfers. I know Vanessa has been using the company accounts to fund her private acquisitions.
I also know she intends to sell The Fallen Star under my name.
If anything happens to me, do not let her control Maya's future. The design belongs to my daughter. The records belong to the truth.
I have placed a copy of the financial ledger on the drive. The original authorization documents are hidden separately.
Please do what I couldn't.
Daniel.
Maya pressed a hand to her mouth.
Her father had known.
He had known Vanessa was stealing money. He had known she planned to sell his design. And he had tried to protect Maya before he died.
But the letter contained something else.
A sentence at the bottom had been written in different ink.
If Vanessa claims I signed anything after Tuesday, remember that I was already unconscious.
Maya looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Richard's face had gone gray.
“Daniel was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday evening. He never regained consciousness.””
Evelyn's expression hardened.
“Then any document bearing his signature after that date requires serious examination.””
Adrian leaned over the letter.
“Which means the transfer agreement may not only be fraudulent. It may have been created after Daniel was physically incapable of signing it.””
Maya felt the pieces coming together.
The stolen design.
The missing paperwork.
The financial transfers.
Vanessa's desperate attempts to destroy the crate.
And the bloodstained document Chloe had found.
“Why was there blood on this?”” Maya asked, pointing to the torn paper.
Richard stared at it.
Then he whispered, “Because it was torn from the original ledger.””
“That's not an answer.””
He swallowed.
“Daniel cut his hand while trying to remove the papers from a locked cabinet. He was already sick. The blood must have stained the corner.””
Maya's chest tightened.
She imagined her father alone in the workshop, struggling to preserve evidence while the people closest to him betrayed his trust.
“Where is the original ledger?”” she asked.
Richard looked at the crate.
“I don't know.””
Evelyn turned toward the computer.
“We'll examine the flash drive and secure all related evidence.””
A technician entered the room carrying a laptop.
After connecting the drive through a protected forensic device, he opened a folder containing spreadsheets, bank statements, and scanned documents.
One file was labeled:
FINAL AUTHORIZATION — READ BEFORE RELEASE.
Maya leaned closer.
The technician opened it.
A video appeared on the screen.
Daniel sat in his workshop, looking pale but alert. He wore the blue shirt Maya remembered from the last birthday they celebrated together.
He looked directly into the camera.
“If you're watching this,” he said, “then Vanessa has probably found out what I've been doing.””
Maya's knees weakened.
It was her father.
Alive.
Speaking to her from a recording made before his death.
Daniel took a breath.
“I need you to understand something, Maya. The company is not what matters most. Neither is the money, the design, or the Sterling name.””
He smiled faintly.
“You matter most.””
Maya covered her mouth as tears streamed down her cheeks.
Then Daniel's expression became serious.
“There is one thing I haven't told you. Something that could change everything you believe about our family.””
He glanced toward someone outside the camera's view.
Then he whispered the words that made Richard stagger backward.
“Vanessa isn't the only person who betrayed me.””
The video froze.

And on the screen, a new file appeared automatically.
