Chapter 8: The Memory Emily Buried

Daniel did not sleep.

He sat in the dark library for hours, staring at the phone in his hand.

Rafael’s final words repeated in his mind.

*Emily wasn’t just a witness.*

*She was the last person to see Thomas alive.*

Every instinct told him not to believe it.

Not after everything he had learned.

Not after discovering how many people had manipulated him.

But doubt was dangerous.

And Rafael knew exactly where to place it.

By sunrise, Daniel had made his decision.

He needed the truth.

Not Patricia’s truth.

Not Rafael’s truth.

Not even Emily’s.

His own.

Emily returned to the company early the next morning.

She had spent the night going through the documents from the hidden storage room.

Her father.

Thomas.

Rafael.

Three names connected by a secret she never knew existed.

The life she remembered suddenly felt incomplete.

A knock interrupted her thoughts.

“Come in.””

Daniel entered.

She immediately noticed something was wrong.

His face was tired.

His eyes were full of questions.

“Daniel.””

He closed the door behind him.

“We need to talk.””

Emily looked at him carefully.

“About what?””

“About the night my father disappeared.””

Her expression changed slightly.

She said nothing.

Daniel noticed.

“You remember.””

Emily looked away.

“Yes.””

The answer surprised him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t know the whole truth.””

“But you knew something.””

Emily remained quiet.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Emily.””

His voice was not angry.

That made it worse.

“Tell me what happened.””

She sat down slowly.

For years, she had avoided this memory.

Not because she wanted to hide it.

Because she had never understood it.

“I went to Thomas’s office that night because he called me.””

Daniel froze.

“He called you?””

“Yes.””

“What did he say?””

Emily looked at the old documents on her desk.

“He told me he discovered something about the company.””

“About Rafael?””

“I didn’t know that at the time.””

She took a breath.

“He was afraid.””

Daniel listened.

“He gave me a folder.””

“The trust documents?””

“Yes.””

“And then?””

Emily closed her eyes.

“I left.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“You left?””

“Yes.””

“Before my father disappeared?””

“Yes.””

Silence.

Daniel looked confused.

“Then why did Rafael say you were the last person to see him alive?””

Emily stared.

“Because I was.””

The honesty shocked him.

“But I didn’t know what happened after.””

Daniel looked away.

His emotions were fighting.

Anger.

Confusion.

Pain.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Emily answered quietly.

“Because the next morning, when we heard Thomas was gone, I thought you would blame yourself.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You protected me?””

“Yes.””

“Even then?””

Emily’s eyes softened.

“Especially then.””

That answer broke something inside him.

Because even when he had spent years doubting her, she had still been protecting him.

Later that day, Emily, Daniel, and Thomas met privately.

They needed to reconstruct the timeline.

Thomas sat across from them.

“I remember leaving the office after Emily left.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Where did you go?””

“To meet someone.””

“Who?””

Thomas hesitated.

“Rafael.””

The room became tense.

“You met Rafael after Emily left?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Thomas looked at Emily.

“Because I believed he was helping me.””

Emily leaned forward.

“What happened?””

Thomas looked down.

“He told me he had proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That someone was using Daniel to move company money.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

He already knew the answer.

“Patricia.””

Thomas nodded.

“I thought so.””

“What happened next?””

Thomas was quiet for a long time.

Then he said:

“I realized too late that Rafael wasn’t helping me.””

Emily watched him.

“He was controlling the situation.””

Thomas continued.

“He showed me documents. He made me believe Patricia was the only problem.””

“But she wasn’t.””

“No.””

Thomas looked at Daniel.

“She was only one piece.””

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas’s expression became serious.

“Rafael wanted me focused on Patricia.””

“So he could do what?””

Thomas looked toward Emily.

“Remove anyone who could expose him.””

That afternoon, the board received another emergency notice.

This time, it came from Rafael.

Not a message.

Not a threat.

A formal announcement.

The legal department entered Emily’s office with a sealed document.

“Chairperson.””

Emily opened it.

Her expression changed.

“What is this?””

The lawyer looked uncomfortable.

“Rafael filed an emergency claim.””

“Against the company?””

“Yes.””

Daniel stood.

“On what grounds?””

The lawyer swallowed.

“He claims the board appointment of Emily Carter Ashforth was based on fraudulent information.””

Silence.

Emily read the document.

Rafael was challenging her authority.

Using the same power he had helped create.

Thomas looked furious.

“He’s trying to destroy your position before the audit finishes.””

Emily remained calm.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

“He’s trying to delay.””

“Why?””

“Because he knows what we’re going to find.””

That evening, Daniel went to Patricia.

Not as her son.

As someone searching for answers.

She was sitting alone in the mansion.

The same place where she once controlled every conversation.

Now it felt empty.

“You came.””

Daniel stood across from her.

“Tell me the truth.””

Patricia looked at him.

“About what?””

“Rafael.””

Her expression changed.

“I don’t know what you think—”

“Stop.””

Daniel’s voice was firm.

“For once, stop protecting yourself.””

Patricia stared.

“You sound like your father.””

“Maybe I should have listened to him.””

The words hurt.

But Patricia accepted them.

After a long silence, she said:

“I never wanted to hurt you.””

Daniel laughed.

“That’s your defense?””

“No.””

She looked down.

“I wanted you to have everything.””

“You wanted me to have control.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Patricia’s eyes filled with frustration.

“Because I knew what this family did to people who weren’t powerful.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What?””

She stood.

“You think I enjoyed being married into this family?””

Her voice became sharper.

“You think your grandfather respected me? Your father? The board?””

Daniel said nothing.

“I spent decades being ignored.””

“And that justified everything?””

“No.””

The answer surprised him.

Patricia looked exhausted.

“It explains it.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Who started it?””

She looked at him.

“What?””

“The plan.””

Silence.

Then Patricia whispered:

“Rafael.””

Daniel froze.

She continued.

“He came to me years ago.””

“Why?””

“Because he knew I was angry.””

“And you agreed?””

“I thought I was taking back what was mine.””

Daniel looked disgusted.

“You used me.””

Patricia looked away.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than denial.

That night, Emily returned to the hidden storage room alone.

Something bothered her.

A detail she had missed.

She reopened the box containing her father’s documents.

Inside was a letter.

No name.

No signature.

Only a sentence written by hand.

*If Emily ever discovers the truth, give her the key.*

Her heart stopped.

She searched the box.

At the bottom was a small envelope.

Inside was a key.

The same kind Thomas had given her.

But this one was older.

Attached was a note.

*The second half of the truth is not in Ashford records. It is where the betrayal began.*

Emily stared.

Then her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

“Hello?””

A voice whispered:

“Emily.””

She froze.

Because she knew that voice.

Not from memory.

Not from recordings.

From childhood.

“Who is this?””

The person on the other end breathed heavily.

Then said:

“Your father wanted you to know he never abandoned you.””

Emily’s hand trembled.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“I’m the person who helped him disappear.””

Emily stood completely still.

“Where are you?””

The voice lowered.

“Far away from Rafael.””

Her heart raced.

“Tell me where.””

The answer came quietly.

“But you need to hurry.””

“Why?””

A long pause.

“Because Rafael already knows I contacted you.””

The call ended.

And before Emily could move…

The lights in the storage room went out.
