Chapter 6: The Face Hidden in the Photograph

Emily stared at the photograph on her phone.

The restaurant noise around her disappeared.

The clinking of glasses.

The quiet conversations.

The footsteps of people moving between tables.

Everything faded.

Because there was only one thing she could see.

The person standing behind her five years ago.

The person watching her leave Thomas Ashford’s office.

The person who had been there on the night everything changed.

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

“No…”

Thomas looked at her carefully.

“What is it?””

Emily didn’t answer.

She enlarged the picture again.

The image was grainy. The lighting was poor. The person stood partially hidden in the shadows.

But Emily knew that face.

She had seen that face thousands of times.

She trusted that face.

She had defended that face.

She had loved that face.

“Daniel.””

Thomas’s expression changed.

“What?””

Emily placed the phone on the table.

“He was there.””

Thomas picked it up.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then his face became heavy.

“I was afraid of this.””

Emily looked at him.

“You knew?””

“No.””

“But you suspected.””

Thomas lowered the phone.

“I suspected someone close to me was involved. I never knew who.””

Emily looked away.

Her mind was moving faster than she could process.

Daniel had always been there.

The same man who told her he loved her.

The same man who held her hand after Thomas disappeared.

The same man who claimed he wanted to protect the family.

Could he really have been part of it?

“No,” she whispered.

Thomas watched her.

“Emily.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“There has to be another explanation.””

“Maybe.””

But Thomas’s voice didn’t sound convinced.

And that hurt.

Because Thomas knew Daniel better than anyone.

Emily stood.

“I need to talk to him.””

Thomas looked concerned.

“Be careful.””

She looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because if Daniel was involved, even unknowingly, then someone used him.””

“And if someone used him?””

Thomas’s expression darkened.

“Then that person knows exactly how to control him.””

Daniel waited in the old family library.

The room had belonged to his grandfather.

A place filled with history.

A place where decisions that shaped the Ashford family had been made for generations.

Tonight, it felt like a courtroom.

He heard the door open.

Emily walked inside.

Their eyes met.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Daniel said:

“You saw it.””

Emily closed the door.

“Yes.””

He nodded slowly.

“I didn’t know what to think.””

“Neither did I.””

Daniel looked at the photograph on his phone.

“I found it in a message from an unknown number.””

“Who sent it?””

“I don’t know.””

Emily studied him.

“Why did you believe it?””

Daniel gave a bitter smile.

“Because I wanted to believe anything except that I was the problem.””

The honesty surprised her.

He looked exhausted.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I need to say this.””

She waited.

“I spent years blaming you.””

His voice cracked slightly.

“I thought you were always one step ahead because you wanted control.””

Emily remained silent.

“But now I realize you were one step ahead because you were trying to stop everything from falling apart.””

He looked at her.

“And I helped the people causing it.””

Emily’s expression softened.

“Did you?””

Daniel looked down.

“I don’t know.””

That answer mattered.

Because for the first time, he wasn’t pretending.

“I remember that night,” he said.

Emily froze.

“What night?””

“The night my father disappeared.””

The room became still.

Daniel walked toward the bookshelf.

“I remember him arguing with someone.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

Emily watched him carefully.

“But you were there.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Because I thought I was protecting you.””

The words sounded painfully familiar.

Thomas had said the same thing.

Emily’s voice lowered.

“Daniel, what happened?””

He turned around.

“My father called me that night.””

Emily waited.

“He told me he needed my help.””

“What kind of help?””

Daniel swallowed.

“He said there was someone inside the company stealing money.””

Emily’s heartbeat increased.

“What did you do?””

“I met him at the office.””

“When?””

“About midnight.””

Emily stared.

“That’s the same time I was there.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know.””

The pieces began connecting.

“But when I arrived, my father was already angry.””

“About what?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“About me.””

Emily frowned.

“What?””

“He told me I had been manipulated.””

“By who?””

Daniel looked at her.

“I thought he meant you.””

The words hurt.

Even now.

Daniel continued.

“I thought he was saying you were trying to take my position.””

Emily’s eyes narrowed.

“Why would you think that?””

“Because someone had been telling me things.””

“Who?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Emily already knew.

“Patricia.””

He nodded.

“My mother told me you were building influence behind my back.””

A bitter laugh escaped him.

“She said my father was replacing me.””

Emily stepped closer.

“And you believed her?””

Daniel looked away.

“I wanted to.””

That confession was painful.

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid.””

He looked at her.

“I spent my whole life trying to prove I was worthy of my father’s approval.””

Emily understood.

That was Daniel’s weakness.

Not greed.

Not ambition.

Fear.

“Then what happened that night?””

Daniel took a deep breath.

“My father told me he had proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That Patricia was moving money.””

Emily’s eyes widened.

“Then why did you blame me?””

“Because she convinced me the opposite.””

He ran a hand through his hair.

“She told me my father was testing me. She said if I exposed you, I would prove I was loyal to the family.””

Emily stared.

“That makes no sense.””

“I know that now.””

“And then?””

Daniel looked toward the window.

“I left.””

Emily froze.

“You left?””

“Yes.””

“You left Thomas alone?””

His face collapsed.

“I thought I was giving him time to cool down.””

Silence.

Then:

“When I came back the next morning, he was gone.””

Emily felt a chill.

“Daniel…”

“I spent five years thinking maybe I caused it.””

The confession hung between them.

Emily wanted to be angry.

But she saw something she had never allowed herself to see.

Daniel had been manipulated too.

Not innocent.

But not the mastermind.

The next morning, Thomas returned to the company.

But this time, he brought something else.

A final piece of evidence.

The board gathered again.

Emily sat at the head of the table.

Daniel sat across from her.

Neither spoke.

Thomas placed a small device on the table.

“What is that?”” the legal advisor asked.

“A recording.””

Patricia, standing near the back of the room, immediately stiffened.

“A recording of what?””

Thomas looked at her.

“The conversation that happened the night I disappeared.””

Everyone turned.

Patricia forced a smile.

“You expect us to believe some random audio file?””

“No.””

Thomas pressed play.

The speakers filled the room.

A voice appeared.

Daniel’s voice.

“You said my father was going to replace me.””

A woman answered.

Patricia.

“You need to understand, Daniel. Your father is old. He doesn’t see what’s happening.””

The room became frozen.

Daniel closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

Patricia’s voice was clear.

“Emily is the reason you will lose everything.””

Daniel’s recorded voice sounded uncertain.

“What do you want me to do?””

Emily looked at Daniel.

He looked devastated.

Then the recording continued.

Patricia said:

“Just get your father away from the office tonight.””

A pause.

Then:

“After that, I’ll handle the rest.””

The recording stopped.

Nobody breathed.

Patricia’s face had completely changed.

The confidence was gone.

The smile was gone.

Thomas looked at the board.

“Now you know the truth.””

Daniel looked at his mother.

“No…”

Patricia remained silent.

For once, she had no words.

Then suddenly, her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

She answered.

“What?””

A man’s voice came through.

Everyone watched her face.

Then she slowly lowered the phone.

Emily noticed.

“What happened?””

Patricia looked directly at her.

And for the first time, she didn’t look like someone in control.

She looked like someone receiving a threat.

“He knows.””

Emily frowned.

“Who?””

Patricia’s eyes moved toward Thomas.

Then back to Emily.

“The person who was behind all of this.””

The room went silent.

Thomas stepped forward.

“Who?””

Patricia whispered:

“The person who ordered me to destroy the Ashford family.””

A pause.

Then she said the name.

A name nobody expected.

May you like

A name that made Thomas’s face turn pale.

“Rafael.””
