Chapter 5: The Son Who Never Knew the Truth

Emily stood in the quiet hallway, staring at Daniel.

For years, she had imagined the day he would finally ask the right questions.

She imagined anger.

Accusations.

Maybe even hatred.

But she never imagined seeing pain in his eyes.

That was harder.

Because anger could be fought.

Pain could only be faced.

“Daniel…”

He looked away.

“Just answer me.””

His voice was lower than she had ever heard it.

“Did my father choose you because he knew I couldn’t be trusted?””

Emily remained silent for a moment.

Not because she didn’t know the answer.

Because she knew the answer would hurt him.

“No.””

Daniel looked back at her.

“No?””

“Your father didn’t choose me because he hated you.””

“Then why?””

Emily walked toward the window at the end of the hallway.

Outside, the city moved like nothing had changed.

Cars passed.

People walked.

The world continued.

Even when someone’s entire life was falling apart.

“He chose me because he believed you were capable of becoming better.””

Daniel’s expression tightened.

“That’s supposed to make me feel better?””

“No.””

She turned toward him.

“It’s supposed to make you understand.””

“Understand what?””

“That Thomas never gave up on you.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Really? Because it sounds like he gave everything to you.””

Emily looked down.

“That isn’t true.””

“Then explain it.””

She took a breath.

“Your father knew you were talented. He knew you were smart. But he also knew you wanted approval more than you wanted responsibility.””

Daniel froze.

The words landed because they were true.

Emily continued.

“He was afraid that one day, someone would use that weakness against you.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Someone like Patricia.””

Emily didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

Across the building, Patricia stood inside a private office, staring through the glass walls.

Her reflection looked calm.

Perfect.

Controlled.

But her hands were shaking.

She picked up her phone.

The call connected after one ring.

“It’s happening.””

A man’s voice answered.

“Who knows?””

“Thomas.””

Silence.

Then:

“That’s impossible.””

Patricia closed her eyes.

“I saw him.””

The voice became colder.

“Are you sure?””

“I’m not blind.””

A pause.

“What about Emily?””

“She knows too.””

The man exhaled.

“That complicates things.””

Patricia looked toward the boardroom.

“No.””

“What?””

“She’s exactly where we need her.””

The man was quiet.

Then asked:

“What do you mean?””

Patricia smiled faintly.

“Emily thinks she finally has control.””

She looked at the documents on the desk.

“But she doesn’t know the entire story.””

Two hours later, Emily, Daniel, Thomas, and the board members gathered again.

This time, nobody sat comfortably.

The atmosphere had changed.

The first meeting had been about power.

This one was about survival.

Thomas placed a second folder on the table.

“This contains the information I collected before I disappeared.””

The legal advisor opened it carefully.

Inside were financial records, communication logs, and copies of private agreements.

Emily watched Daniel’s reaction.

He looked overwhelmed.

“Why didn’t you show this to me?””

Thomas looked at his son.

“Because I couldn’t.””

“You couldn’t?””

“No.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“That sounds like an excuse.””

Thomas nodded slowly.

“I understand why you think that.””

“Do you?””

“Yes.””

The older man looked at him.

“Because I made you believe you were stronger than you were.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas sat down.

“For most of your life, I protected you from consequences.””

Nobody spoke.

“I fixed mistakes before you saw them. I removed problems before they reached you. I thought I was helping.””

He looked at Emily.

“But I was creating a weakness.””

Daniel swallowed.

“So you trusted her because you thought I was weak.””

Thomas shook his head.

“No.””

A pause.

“I trusted her because she was strong.””

The answer silenced him.

The board reviewed the documents for nearly an hour.

Every page revealed another layer.

Hidden accounts.

Unauthorized decisions.

Internal manipulation.

But one thing bothered Emily.

The evidence pointed toward Patricia.

Yet something didn’t fit.

She had expected Patricia to be the mastermind.

But Thomas seemed hesitant.

Like he knew something worse.

When the meeting paused again, Emily followed him into the hallway.

“You’re hiding something.””

Thomas stopped.

“What?””

“You’re telling the truth.””

“Yes.””

“But not all of it.””

His expression changed.

Emily stepped closer.

“I know you.””

Thomas looked away.

“I’m trying to protect you.””

“That’s exactly what you said five years ago.””

The words hurt.

Because they were true.

Thomas sighed.

“The night I disappeared, I discovered someone inside the family was planning to remove me.””

“Patricia?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

“No.””

Emily frowned.

“Then who?””

Thomas looked at her.

“Daniel.””

Her heart stopped.

“What?””

“Not intentionally.””

The hallway suddenly felt colder.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas lowered his voice.

“Daniel was being used.””

“By Patricia?””

“Yes.””

Emily shook her head.

“No. Daniel would never help someone hurt you.””

Thomas looked at her sadly.

“That’s why it worked.””

That evening, Daniel returned to the mansion alone.

The place felt different.

Empty.

Cold.

The same rooms where he had humiliated Emily now felt like evidence of his own mistakes.

He walked into the parlor.

The place where she had stood.

The place where she had quietly made the call that destroyed his illusion of control.

He remembered her face.

Not angry.

Not broken.

Disappointed.

That was worse.

His phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

A message from an unknown number.

*You deserve to know what Emily never told you.*

Daniel frowned.

Another message appeared.

*Meet me tonight if you want the truth about your marriage.*

He stared.

Then another message.

A photo.

His blood ran cold.

It was Emily.

Five years earlier.

Standing outside Thomas’s office.

Holding the same folder Thomas had shown today.

Daniel zoomed in.

The timestamp.

The date.

The night before Thomas disappeared.

His heart started racing.

Because there was something in the picture he hadn’t noticed before.

Someone else was standing in the background.

Watching Emily leave.

Daniel looked closer.

And recognized the person.

“No…”

He dropped the phone onto the table.

Because the person in the photograph was someone he trusted completely.

At the same time, Emily sat across from Thomas in a quiet restaurant far from the company.

Neither of them had spoken for several minutes.

Finally, Thomas said:

“There is something you need to know.””

Emily looked up.

“What?””

“The night I disappeared, I didn’t leave because I was afraid of Patricia.””

“Then who?””

Thomas reached into his pocket and placed an old key on the table.

Emily stared at it.

“What is that?””

“A safety deposit box.””

“Where?””

Thomas looked directly at her.

“Your name is on it.””

Emily’s expression changed.

“My name?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Thomas’s voice became quiet.

“Because before I disappeared, I discovered something about your past.””

Her heart tightened.

“My past?””

Thomas nodded.

“Something even you don’t know.””

The room seemed to stop.

“What are you talking about?””

Thomas pushed the key toward her.

“Your parents didn’t die the way you were told.””

Emily froze.

The words felt impossible.

“My parents…”

Thomas nodded.

“They were connected to Ashford Enterprises long before you met Daniel.””

Emily stared at the key.

Five years of questions.

A lifetime of believing she knew where she came from.

All of it suddenly uncertain.

Then her phone vibrated.

A message from Daniel.

Only four words.

*I know who did it.*

Emily opened the message.

And the photo appeared.

The same photo Daniel had received.

But this time, she saw something different.

Because the person standing behind her in the picture…

May you like

Was not Patricia.

It was someone Emily had trusted with her entire life.
