Chapter 7: The Man Behind the Numbers

The name remained in the air.

Rafael.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because it was not a name anyone expected to hear.

Rafael had been the quiet one.

The reliable one.

The man who had spent decades protecting Ashford Enterprises.

He was the person everyone trusted when money was involved.

Especially Thomas.

Especially Emily.

Especially Daniel.

And now Patricia was saying he was the person who had controlled everything from the beginning.

Daniel shook his head slowly.

“No.””

Patricia looked at him.

“You think I’m lying?””

“Yes.””

His voice was broken.

“You lied about everything else.””

For the first time, Patricia looked hurt.

Not because he accused her.

Because he was right.

Thomas stared toward the empty doorway where Rafael had been standing moments earlier.

“He’s gone.””

Emily immediately noticed.

Her eyes moved across the room.

The chair where Rafael had been sitting was empty.

The documents he had reviewed were gone.

Even his briefcase had disappeared.

A cold feeling moved through her.

“He knew.””

The legal advisor looked confused.

“Knew what?””

Emily’s voice lowered.

“He knew this meeting would expose him.””

Thomas nodded.

“That’s why Patricia received that call.””

Daniel looked at his mother.

“You worked with Rafael?””

Patricia looked away.

The silence was enough.

Daniel stepped back.

“How long?””

No answer.

“How long?””

His voice became louder.

“How long were you both using me?””

Patricia closed her eyes.

“I never wanted it to become this.””

Daniel laughed.

A painful laugh.

“That’s what everyone says after they destroy something.””

The search for Rafael began immediately.

Security checked every entrance.

The company’s systems were reviewed.

His access records were pulled.

And every minute that passed revealed another piece of the truth.

Rafael had not simply disappeared.

He had erased his trail.

Emily sat inside her office with Thomas and Daniel.

The three people who had been connected by years of secrets now faced the same enemy.

Thomas looked exhausted.

“I should have seen it.””

Emily looked at him.

“No.””

“Yes.””

He stared at the city outside.

“Rafael was my closest advisor for thirty years.””

“That doesn’t mean you failed.””

Thomas shook his head.

“It means I trusted the wrong person.””

Daniel remained silent.

Emily looked at him.

“You’re blaming yourself.””

He didn’t deny it.

“I should have listened.””

“You were manipulated.””

“I still made choices.””

The honesty surprised her.

Daniel looked down.

“I hurt you.””

Emily said nothing.

Because there was nothing simple about forgiveness.

“You did.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

A long silence followed.

Then Thomas spoke.

“Daniel.””

Daniel looked up.

“I need you to understand something.””

“What?””

“Rafael didn’t choose you because you were weak.””

Daniel frowned.

“Then why?””

“Because you were predictable.””

The words hurt.

But Thomas continued.

“You wanted my approval. Patricia knew that. Rafael knew that.””

Daniel looked away.

“They used the thing I wanted most.””

“Yes.””

Thomas paused.

“Your love for this family.””

That evening, Emily received a message.

Unknown number.

Again.

She opened it.

*You’re looking for Rafael. Stop.*

Her expression changed.

Daniel noticed.

“What is it?””

She showed him.

Thomas immediately stood.

“Don’t respond.””

Emily looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because whoever has Rafael knows exactly what we are doing.””

Another message appeared.

*You think Rafael is the villain because that’s what you need to believe.*

Emily stared.

A third message.

*But ask yourself one question: Who benefits most from Rafael being exposed?*

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Emily didn’t answer.

Because the question was dangerous.

Not because it was true.

Because it created doubt.

And doubt was exactly how people like Rafael controlled others.

Then the final message appeared.

A photograph.

Emily opened it.

Her face changed.

It was a picture from years ago.

Before Thomas disappeared.

Before everything fell apart.

In the picture were three people.

Thomas.

Rafael.

And Emily’s father.

She stared.

Her hands became cold.

“My father…”

Daniel looked at the image.

“What about him?””

Emily zoomed in.

The picture had been taken outside Ashford headquarters.

But the date was impossible.

Because Emily’s father was supposed to have died years before she ever met Daniel.

Thomas noticed her expression.

“What is it?””

Emily looked at him.

“Why was my father here?””

The question changed everything.

Thomas slowly sat down.

“I was hoping you would never have to ask that.””

Emily’s eyes narrowed.

“You knew?””

Thomas was silent.

That was answer enough.

Three hours later, Thomas brought Emily to an old storage room beneath the Ashford headquarters.

A place few people knew existed.

The walls were covered with old company records.

Files that had never been digitized.

Emily looked around.

“What is this place?””

“Where the Ashford family kept secrets.””

She looked at him.

“Convenient.””

Thomas accepted the accusation.

“Yes.””

He opened a locked cabinet.

Inside were dozens of boxes.

One had a name written across it.

*CARTER FAMILY.*

Emily froze.

“My family?””

Thomas nodded.

She opened the box.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Letters.

Her hands trembled as she picked up the first photograph.

It showed her father standing beside Thomas.

Both of them were much younger.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten note.

*The partnership that built Ashford Enterprises.*

Emily looked at Thomas.

“My father helped create this company?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did I never know?””

Thomas looked away.

“Because someone wanted you to believe you had no connection to it.””

“Who?””

Thomas hesitated.

Then answered:

“Rafael.””

Emily felt the room shift.

“But why?””

Thomas took a deep breath.

“Because your father discovered something.””

“What?””

“That Ashford Enterprises was not built only through success.””

He opened another file.

“He discovered money was being moved illegally through a network of private accounts.””

Emily looked at the documents.

“And Rafael?””

“He was involved.””

She stared.

“Then why did you trust him?””

Thomas’s face filled with regret.

“Because I thought he was helping me expose it.””

Emily looked confused.

“What happened?””

Thomas’s voice became quiet.

“Your father disappeared.””

Silence.

Emily stopped breathing.

“My father didn’t die in an accident?””

Thomas shook his head.

“No.””

The word felt like a door opening.

A door that could never close again.

“What happened to him?””

Thomas looked at her.

“I don’t know.””

Emily’s eyes filled with questions.

“But you said he disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did everyone say he died?””

Thomas looked at the floor.

“Because Rafael created evidence.””

Later that night, Daniel sat alone in the mansion.

Everything he believed had collapsed.

His father had been betrayed.

His mother had manipulated him.

His closest advisor had lied.

And Emily…

Emily had been the only person telling the truth.

His phone rang.

He almost ignored it.

Then he saw the name.

Rafael.

Daniel answered immediately.

“Where are you?””

Silence.

Then Rafael spoke.

“You sound disappointed.””

Daniel stood.

“You used me.””

“No.””

“I trusted you.””

“And that is exactly why I chose you.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“You ruined my family.””

Rafael laughed softly.

“No, Daniel.””

A pause.

“Your family was already ruined.””

Daniel gripped the phone.

“What do you want?””

“I want you to stop helping Emily.””

“Why?””

“Because she doesn’t know the truth either.””

Daniel froze.

“What are you talking about?””

Rafael lowered his voice.

“Ask her what happened the night your father disappeared.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

“Because Emily wasn’t just a witness.””

A pause.

“She was the last person to see Thomas alive.””

The call ended.

Daniel stood motionless.

Because once again, the truth had changed.

May you like

And this time, it pointed toward the one person he had finally started to trust.

Emily.
