Chapter 7: The Truth Nobody Wanted Lily To Know
The next day, I drove to Rebecca's office with Lily beside me.
Neither of us talked much.
Sometimes silence isn't peaceful.
Sometimes silence is the sound of people trying to understand something too painful to say.
Lily sat in the passenger seat staring out the window.
Finally, she spoke.
"Do you think she's telling the truth?""
I kept my eyes on the road.
"I don't know.""
She nodded.
"That's what everyone says before something bad happens.""
I looked at her.
"Lily.""
She shrugged.
"It's okay.""
No.
It wasn't.
That was the problem.
Lily had learned to accept pain before it arrived.
At Rebecca's office, Evelyn was already waiting.
Tara came too.
I wasn't sure why.
Part of me wanted to tell her she didn't belong in this conversation.
But another part of me knew something important.
Lily needed to see adults stay.
Even when things were uncomfortable.
Rebecca placed a file on the table.
"This is everything we have.""
Evelyn opened her folder.
"Not everything.""
Rebecca looked surprised.
"What do you mean?""
"There are pages missing.""
She handed over copies.
Rebecca studied them carefully.
Then her expression changed.
"Where did you get these?""
"From a private investigator.""
I immediately looked at Lily.
She looked confused.
Rebecca read silently.
Then she looked up.
"These are intake records.""
"What do they say?"" I asked.
Rebecca hesitated.
"They show that Lily's original placement request included a recommendation.""
"From who?""
Rebecca looked at the page.
"Marcus...""
I felt my chest tighten.
"From who?""
She looked at Tara.
Nobody spoke.
Then Rebecca answered.
"Tara Hale.""
The room went silent.
Lily looked at my wife.
"No.""
Tara's face lost all color.
"Lily...""
"No.""
The word came out louder.
"You knew?""
Tara immediately shook her head.
"No. Not like that.""
I stood.
"Tara, explain.""
She looked terrified.
Not guilty.
Terrified.
"I didn't place her.""
"Then why is your name here?""
She covered her mouth.
"I was trying to help.""
Lily stared.
"Help?""
Tara began crying.
"I knew Sarah.""
Everyone froze.
I looked at her.
"What?""
"Before you and I met, I worked with a family support organization.""
She wiped her face.
"Sarah came to us.""
Evelyn stood.
"You knew my daughter?""
Tara nodded.
"I knew she was struggling.""
"Then why didn't you tell me?""
Because I didn't know.""
I shook my head.
"You knew Lily before she came to us.""
"Yes.""
"And you never told me?""
Tara looked at Lily.
"Because I didn't want you to think...""
She stopped.
"Think what?""
"That I wanted this.""
The words confused me.
"What does that mean?""
Tara looked broken.
"When Lily came up for placement, I recognized the name.""
She looked at Lily.
"And I remembered her.""
Lily whispered:
"From before?""
Tara nodded.
"I remembered seeing you.""
A tear rolled down her face.
"You were five years old. You were sitting in a waiting room holding a stuffed rabbit.""
Lily touched her own hand.
The rabbit.
The same one on her dresser.
"I wanted to help you," Tara said.
"But I couldn't.""
Evelyn stared at her.
"So you recommended placement?""
Tara nodded.
"Because I knew Sarah couldn't keep her safe.""
Nobody spoke.
Then Lily asked:
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Tara looked at her.
"Because I was ashamed.""
"Of what?""
"Because after I met you again, after you came here...""
She looked down.
"I was scared you would find out I knew you before.""
"Why?""
Tara's voice broke.
"Because I thought you would believe I only wanted you because I felt responsible.""
Lily stared at her.
And for once, Tara wasn't the strong one.
She wasn't the person making rules.
She was just a woman who had carried guilt for years.
But then Lily asked the question that mattered.
"Did you ever actually want me here?""
Tara cried.
"Every day.""
The answer came instantly.
No hesitation.
"I just didn't know how to be your mother without being afraid.""
Nobody moved.
Because that was the first honest thing Tara had ever said.
Rebecca looked back at the documents.
"There is still one problem.""
Everyone turned.
She pointed at a signature.
"This recommendation wasn't the only thing.""
"What else?""
Rebecca looked at Lily.
"The person who approved your placement had a conflict of interest.""
I frowned.
"What kind of conflict?""
She turned the page.
"The approval came from someone who knew your biological family.""
Evelyn stepped closer.
"Who?""
Rebecca looked at the name.
Then slowly said:
"The case supervisor.""
May you like
A pause.
"Was your biological grandfather.""
