Chapter 5: The Name From Lily's Past

I didn't sleep after Rebecca's call.

Not because I was angry.

Because I was afraid.

Fear is different when you're a parent.

Before Lily, fear was about yourself.

Your job.

Your money.

Your future.

After Lily, fear becomes a question.

What if I can't protect her?

The next morning, I asked Rebecca to meet us.

Not at home.

Somewhere neutral.

A small coffee shop where Lily could feel normal.

Lily sat beside me, holding a cup of hot chocolate with both hands.

She looked nervous.

Rebecca smiled gently.

"Hi, Lily.""

"Hi.""

"I just want you to know something.""

Lily looked down.

"You didn't do anything wrong.""

Her fingers tightened around the cup.

"I know.""

But she didn't.

Not completely.

Rebecca looked at me.

"The person requesting information about Lily was her biological grandmother.""

Lily went completely still.

I looked at Rebecca.

"Her grandmother?""

Rebecca nodded.

"Her name is Evelyn Carter.""

Lily whispered:

"I don't know her.""

"I know," Rebecca said.

"Then why does she want my records?""

Rebecca glanced at me before answering.

"Because she has been trying to locate you.""

Lily's face went pale.

"Why?""

No one answered immediately.

Finally, Rebecca said:

"Because she believes she should have custody.""

The words hung in the air.

Lily looked terrified.

I immediately reached for her hand.

"Nobody is taking you anywhere.""

But she didn't look at me.

She looked at Rebecca.

"Did she find me?""

Rebecca's silence told us everything.

My stomach tightened.

"What does that mean?""

Rebecca folded her hands.

"It means she recently hired an attorney.""

I felt anger rise.

"How recently?""

"A few weeks ago.""

A few weeks.

Around the same time Tara started acting differently.

Around the same time Lily started trying harder to disappear.

I looked at my daughter.

"Lily, did anyone contact you?""

She didn't answer.

"Lily?""

Her eyes filled.

Then she whispered:

"Someone came to school.""

My entire body went cold.

"What?""

She wiped her eyes quickly.

"A woman.""

Rebecca leaned forward.

"What did she say?""

Lily looked embarrassed.

"She said she was family.""

I felt my hands shake.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

She stared at the table.

"Because I thought you would be mad.""

"Mad at you?""

She nodded.

"Because everyone leaves when I make things difficult.""

I couldn't breathe for a second.

Because that was the belief we had been fighting.

And someone had just fed it.

After the meeting, I drove home in silence.

Lily sat in the back seat.

Quiet.

When we arrived, Tara was waiting in the living room.

She looked at us.

Then at Rebecca's paperwork.

"You found out.""

I froze.

"What?""

Tara looked at Lily.

Then back at me.

"I was going to tell you.""

"Tell me what?""

She swallowed.

"That Evelyn contacted me.""

The room went silent.

I stared at my wife.

"You knew?""

"I didn't know who she was at first.""

"When?""

A month.

My anger turned into something heavier.

"You knew someone was looking for Lily.""

"Yes.""

"And you didn't tell me?""

"I was trying to handle it.""

"Handle it?""

Tara's voice broke.

"I was scared.""

That surprised me.

Because Tara was many things.

But scared was not one I expected.

"Of what?""

She looked toward Lily.

And for the first time, I saw guilt on her face.

"That one day she would leave.""

Lily looked confused.

"What?""

Tara's eyes filled.

"I thought if I never got too attached, it wouldn't hurt when it happened.""

Nobody spoke.

Because suddenly, the cruel things Tara had done looked different.

Not excused.

Not forgiven.

But different.

She wasn't pushing Lily away because she hated her.

She was pushing Lily away because she was terrified of losing her.

But fear could still hurt people.

And Lily had already been hurt enough.

Tara stepped forward.

"Lily, I am sorry.""

Lily didn't move.

"I shouldn't have said what I said at dinner.""

Still nothing.

"I shouldn't have made you feel like you had to earn your place here.""

Lily finally looked at her.

And Tara whispered:

"Because the truth is...""

Her voice cracked.

"I was the one who was afraid I didn't deserve mine.""

The house went quiet.

For the first time in two years, Tara was the one who looked small.

Then there was a knock at the door.

Everyone turned.

I walked toward it slowly.

When I opened it, a woman stood there.

Older.

Gray hair.

A folder in her hand.

She looked past me.

Straight at Lily.

May you like

And said:

"I think it's time we talked about who she really belongs to.""
