Chapter 6: The Woman At The Door
For a moment, nobody moved.
The woman standing outside our house looked exactly like someone who had been waiting a long time for this moment.
Not nervous.
Not uncertain.
Prepared.
Her gray hair was pulled neatly behind her shoulders. She wore a dark coat despite the mild weather, and she held a thick folder against her chest like it contained something more powerful than words.
Lily froze behind me.
I felt her hand grab the back of my shirt.
A small movement.
Almost invisible.
But I felt it.
And I knew.
She was afraid.
I stepped forward and blocked the doorway slightly.
"Can I help you?""
The woman's eyes moved from me to Lily.
"I believe you know who I am.""
I didn't move.
"No. I don't.""
Her expression softened.
"I'm Evelyn Carter.""
Behind me, Lily stopped breathing.
I looked back.
She had gone pale.
"Tara," I said quietly.
My wife stood frozen near the living room.
Evelyn noticed her.
"So you did tell him.""
Tara swallowed.
"I was going to.""
Evelyn gave a small, humorless smile.
"Of course you were.""
I felt anger rising.
"Nobody is coming into this house until I understand what is happening.""
Evelyn looked at me.
"I am Lily's grandmother.""
"That doesn't answer my question.""
Her expression changed.
For the first time, she looked less confident.
More human.
"I know.""
She glanced down at the folder.
"I've made mistakes.""
The words surprised me.
People who wanted power rarely admitted mistakes.
But I wasn't convinced.
"Then explain why you've been looking for my daughter.""
Evelyn's eyes moved to Lily.
"Because I should have protected her.""
Lily flinched.
I saw it.
That sentence didn't comfort her.
It scared her.
Because children who have been abandoned don't hear "I should have protected you.""
They hear:
"Someone else failed you before.""
I stepped outside and closed the door behind me.
"We can talk here.""
Evelyn nodded.
"I deserve that.""
For several minutes, she explained.
Lily's biological mother, Sarah, had struggled for years. There had been instability, bad choices, and people who promised help but disappeared when things became difficult.
Evelyn said she lived in another state at the time.
She claimed she didn't know how bad things had become until it was too late.
"By the time I found out Lily was in the system, she had already been moved," Evelyn said.
"And you couldn't find her?""
She looked down.
"No.""
I studied her face.
"Why?""
"Because Sarah didn't want me involved.""
"That doesn't sound like the whole story.""
Evelyn looked away.
And that was when I knew there was more.
"What aren't you telling me?""
She tightened her grip on the folder.
"My relationship with Sarah was complicated.""
"That's a nice way to say it.""
Her jaw tightened.
"I was controlling.""
The honesty caught me off guard.
"I thought I knew what was best for everyone. I pushed Sarah away when she needed support.""
She looked toward the house.
"And Lily paid for my mistakes.""
I didn't know what to say.
Because I understood regret.
But regret didn't erase damage.
"What do you want now?""
Evelyn looked at me.
"I want a chance to know her.""
A chance.
That was all.
Not custody.
Not taking Lily.
Just a chance.
But Lily had heard enough.
The front door opened behind me.
"Dad?""
I turned.
She stood there.
Tara was behind her.
"Lily, go inside," I said gently.
"No.""
Her voice was quiet.
But firm.
Everyone looked at her.
She stared at Evelyn.
"Why now?""
Evelyn's face broke.
"What?""
"Why did you want me now?""
The question hit harder than anger.
Because it was the question Lily had carried her whole life.
Why now?
Why when it was convenient?
Why after everyone else had already done the hard part?
Evelyn's eyes filled.
"I don't have a good answer.""
Lily looked down.
"Okay.""
Then she turned away.
But before she went inside, Evelyn said:
"Because I found out something.""
Lily stopped.
"What?""
Evelyn looked at me.
Then at Tara.
Then back at Lily.
"Someone has been lying about what happened the night you entered foster care.""
The air changed.
"What are you talking about?"" I asked.
Evelyn opened the folder.
"There are documents missing from your case file.""
My stomach tightened.
"Missing?""
She nodded.
"And one of those documents changes everything.""
I looked at Lily.
She was staring at the folder.
Then Evelyn said the words that made my blood run cold.
"The person who removed you from your mother's home wasn't a stranger.""
May you like
She paused.
"It was someone you knew.""
