Chapter 3: The Secret Behind The Door
I didn't sleep that night.
I kept staring at the ceiling, thinking about one sentence.
I don't know how much longer I can pretend she's mine.
Pretend.
That was the word I couldn't escape.
The next morning, Tara acted normal.
She made pancakes.
She packed lunches.
She smiled.
And Lily watched her carefully, like she was studying a storm cloud.
That afternoon, I picked Lily up from school.
Usually, she talked about everything.
Her teachers.
Her friends.
The funny things that happened in class.
That day, she was silent.
Finally, I asked:
"How was school?""
"Fine.""
"Just fine?""
She looked out the window.
"Yeah.""
I knew better than to push.
When we got home, I noticed her backpack sitting by the door.
She had forgotten it.
"Lily.""
She froze.
"What?""
"Your backpack.""
Her face changed.
"Oh.""
She ran toward it.
Then stopped.
"I thought I brought it upstairs.""
"Did something happen?""
"No.""
Again.
Too fast.
That evening, I found out what happened.
I was in the hallway when I heard Tara's voice.
"Lily, come here.""
I stopped.
Their voices came from the living room.
"I asked you to clean the bathroom.""
"I did.""
"Not properly.""
"I'm sorry.""
"You're always sorry.""
Silence.
Then Tara said:
"Do you understand that being part of a family means contributing?""
"Yes.""
"Then stop acting like you're a guest.""
The words hit me.
Because they sounded reasonable.
Almost.
But I knew Lily.
And I knew what she heard.
She didn't hear "help around the house.""
She heard "you don't belong.""
I walked into the room.
"Enough.""
Both of them looked at me.
Tara crossed her arms.
"This is not your fight every time.""
"Actually, it is.""
Lily immediately stepped back.
"I'm sorry.""
I looked at her.
"No. Don't apologize.""
Her eyes filled.
"I just made things worse.""
"No, Lily.""
I walked toward her.
"You didn't.""
Tara shook her head.
"See? This is exactly what I'm talking about.""
"What?""
"You rescue her every time.""
I stared at my wife.
"She isn't a person who needs rescuing from consequences. She's a child who needs to know she's loved.""
Tara laughed quietly.
"Everything is about love with you.""
"Because it matters.""
"No, Marcus. Because you're afraid.""
The room went silent.
"Afraid of what?""
She looked directly at me.
"That if you stop protecting her, she'll leave.""
Lily looked down.
And I knew.
She was listening.
She was always listening.
That night, after everyone went to bed, I found Lily sitting on the stairs.
She hugged her knees.
"Can't sleep?""
She shook her head.
I sat beside her.
After a minute, she asked:
"Dad?""
"Yeah?""
"If I wasn't here, would things be easier?""
I felt my chest tighten.
"No.""
She looked at me.
"Are you sure?""
"Absolutely.""
"But Tara would be happier.""
I didn't answer immediately.
Because I wanted to say yes.
I wanted to promise everything would be fine.
But children notice fake promises.
So I told her the truth.
"Tara is responsible for her feelings. Not you.""
Lily stared at the floor.
Then she whispered:
"I heard her talking on the phone.""
My stomach dropped.
"Who was she talking to?""
Lily swallowed.
"I don't know.""
"What did she say?""
She looked at me.
May you like
And then she repeated the words that would change everything.
"She said she found someone who could take me back.""
