Chapter 8: The Friend Who Sold The Secret

Daniel had been my best friend since college.

He was the person who helped me move apartments.

The person who stood beside me when my mother died.

The person who gave a speech at my engagement dinner.

He was family.

Or at least I thought he was.

I found him at the old bar where we used to meet after work.

He was sitting alone.

Waiting.

“You knew I’d come.””

Daniel looked up.

His face said everything.

“I’m sorry.””

I sat across from him.

“How long?””

He didn’t answer.

“How long did you work with Diane?””

He looked down.

“Eight months.””

The pain was worse because I expected him to deny it.

I expected anger.

Excuses.

Instead, he admitted it.

“Why?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Because I was drowning.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

“My company failed.””

“So?””

“So I owed people money.””

His voice cracked.

“People who don’t forgive.””

I shook my head.

“You could have told me.””

“I was ashamed.””

“You betrayed my father.””

“I know.””

“You betrayed me.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

For a moment, I saw my old friend.

The one who used to sit on my couch eating cheap pizza.

The one who promised we would never become people who cared more about money than loyalty.

But somewhere along the way, he changed.

Or maybe I never knew him.

“What did Diane ask you to do?””

Daniel looked away.

“She wanted information.””

“What information?””

“Your father’s business plans.””

I felt sick.

“You gave them to her?””

“Not everything.””

“Enough.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

I stood.

“I don’t know who you are anymore.””

Daniel looked devastated.

“Michael.””

I stopped.

“She threatened my family.””

I turned.

“What?””

“My daughter.””

The room became quiet.

“She said if I didn’t cooperate, she would make sure I lost everything.””

I stared at him.

“Diane threatened your child?””

“Yes.””

I sat back down.

Because suddenly the story became more complicated.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had pain.

But pain didn’t excuse betrayal.

Then Daniel reached into his jacket.

“I have something.””

He placed a flash drive on the table.

“What is this?””

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“Diane wasn’t the one controlling everything.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Who was?””

Daniel looked around.

Then whispered:

“The person who started this whole thing.””

He pushed the flash drive toward me.

“Someone who has been close to Arthur Bennett for decades.””

My father.

The company.

The wedding.

Everything.

All of it suddenly felt connected.

I took the flash drive.

“What’s the name?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then said:

“Your father’s oldest friend.””

That night, I opened the files.

The first document was dated twenty years earlier.

The second was ten years earlier.

The third was from just three months ago.

And every single one had the same name.

Richard Whitmore.

But Richard was dead.

I kept scrolling.

Then I found the final file.

A recorded conversation.

I pressed play.

A man’s voice filled the room.

A voice I recognized.

My father’s oldest friend.

The man who attended every family event.

The man who held me as a child.

The man who called me “little Michael.””

The voice said:

“Arthur still believes kindness protects him.””

I stopped breathing.

Because then the voice continued.

“One day, his son will understand that Arthur Bennett was never as innocent as everyone thinks.””

I stared at the screen.

The name appeared.

*Thomas Reed.*

And beneath it was a message.

*PROJECT: DESTROY BENNETT.*
