Chapter 7: The Marriage That Was Never About Love
I didn’t sleep that night.
Every memory I had with Vanessa replayed in my head.
Our first date.
The first time she met my father.
The night she told me she didn’t care about money.
Every promise.
Every kiss.
Every “I love you.””
I wondered how many of those moments were real.
The next morning, Vanessa came to my father’s house.
She stood outside the door looking exhausted.
My father opened it.
She immediately started crying.
“Arthur, I’m sorry.””
My father looked at her.
“Come inside.””
I almost couldn’t believe it.
After everything.
After the humiliation.
After the betrayal.
He still invited her in.
That was my father.
Too kind for his own good.
We sat in the living room.
Vanessa held a cup of coffee with both hands.
“I need to tell you everything.””
I crossed my arms.
“Start with the money.””
She closed her eyes.
“I didn’t know where it came from.””
“Five million dollars?””
Her face fell.
“You know?””
“Yes.””
She looked at me.
“My mother gave me that money.””
“Why?””
“Because she said she wanted me to convince you to merge your family’s assets after we married.””
I stared at her.
“She was planning to use me.””
“Yes.””
“Were you?””
Vanessa looked like I had slapped her.
“No.””
“Then why did you take the money?””
She looked down.
“Because I was scared.””
The answer surprised me.
“Scared of what?””
“My family.””
She wiped her tears.
“You don’t understand what it’s like growing up in that house.””
I almost laughed.
“No, Vanessa. I understand more than you think.””
She looked at my father.
“He was the only person who ever treated me like I mattered.””
My father said nothing.
“When my father died, my mother changed. Everything became about money. Reputation. Winning.””
Vanessa’s voice cracked.
“She told me love was something poor people used to feel better about losing.””
That sentence made me angry.
Because it sounded exactly like Diane.
“And you believed her?””
“For a while.””
The room went silent.
Vanessa looked at me.
“Until I met you.””
I wanted to believe her.
But trust was not something that returned because someone cried.
“What about the wedding?””
She looked down.
“I didn’t know she would humiliate your father.””
“But you laughed.””
Her face collapsed.
“I know.””
That was the first honest thing she said.
“I hated myself the second I did it.””
I looked away.
Because that was the hardest part.
People were easier to hate when they were monsters.
But Vanessa wasn’t.
She was someone who made a terrible choice.
And I didn’t know if I could forgive it.
Then Claire entered.
“Michael.””
Her expression was serious.
“What now?””
She looked at Vanessa.
Then at me.
“We found the person who gave Diane access to Bennett Holdings.””
My heart tightened.
“Who?””
Claire placed a file on the table.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of someone signing documents.
Someone I knew.
Someone who had been beside me for years.
My hand froze.
May you like
Because the signature belonged to my best friend.
Daniel.
