Chapter 6: The Person Behind The Betrayal
The name on my phone stayed there like a wound I couldn’t stop touching.
*Ethan Whitmore.*
Vanessa’s younger brother.
The man who had stood beside her at the altar.
The man who had hugged my father when he arrived and called him “the only honest businessman left.””
The man who had spent the entire wedding pretending to be shocked.
I looked at my father.
“Ethan?””
My father slowly nodded.
“I was afraid it might be him.””
My stomach dropped.
“You knew?””
“Not for certain.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
My father looked away.
“Because I wanted to believe I was wrong.””
That sentence hurt more than any accusation.
My father had spent his whole life trusting people even when they didn’t deserve it.
I picked up my jacket.
“I need to talk to him.””
My father grabbed my arm.
“Michael.””
I stopped.
“Be careful.””
The way he said it made my chest tighten.
My father was never afraid.
Not when he lost his company.
Not when my mother died.
Not when he had to raise me alone.
But now?
He looked afraid.
Not for himself.
For me.
I found Ethan in his apartment that evening.
He opened the door wearing a smile.
A fake one.
“Michael.””
I didn’t move.
“We need to talk.””
His smile faded.
“About what?””
I held up my phone.
The color drained from his face.
“You know.””
For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then Ethan stepped aside.
“Come in.””
His apartment looked nothing like my father’s house.
Everything was expensive.
Modern furniture.
Glass tables.
Artwork that probably cost more than my childhood home.
But somehow, it felt empty.
I stood in the living room.
“Why?””
Ethan looked at the floor.
“Why what?””
“Why did you try to destroy my father?””
He laughed quietly.
“Your father?””
The bitterness in his voice surprised me.
“You still call him that.””
“He is my father.””
“No.””
Ethan looked up.
“He’s the reason mine died broken.””
I stared at him.
“That’s what you believe?””
“That’s what happened.””
“No. That’s what your family told you.””
His jaw tightened.
“You have no idea what it’s like watching your father lose everything.””
“I know exactly what it’s like watching a father lose everything.””
He looked at me.
“Do you?””
“Yes.””
I stepped closer.
“Because my father spent years working himself sick to give me a life. He lost friends. He lost sleep.
He lost the woman he loved. And he never blamed anyone.””
Ethan looked away.
“You’re just like him.””
“Thank you.””
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“You don’t understand. Your father took everything from us.””
I pulled out the folder.
“The documents say otherwise.””
His expression changed.
“You found those?””
“Yes.””
For the first time, Ethan looked scared.
Not guilty.
Scared.
“What else did you find?””
I watched him carefully.
“What are you hiding?””
He didn’t answer.
That was the answer.
I left his apartment with more questions than I entered with.
But one thing was clear.
Ethan wasn’t acting alone.
When I returned to my father’s house, Claire was waiting.
She looked serious.
“Michael.””
“What happened?””
She handed me a tablet.
“Someone accessed Bennett Holdings’ internal records tonight.””
My heart sank.
“Ethan?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Then who?””
She hesitated.
“Vanessa.””
I stared at her.
“No.””
“I checked twice.””
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Claire looked at me.
“Doesn’t it?””
I thought about the wedding.
Vanessa laughing.
Vanessa defending her mother.
Vanessa knowing more than she admitted.
But I also remembered the woman who cried when she found out what her family had done.
The woman who once loved my father.
“Why would she do that?””
Claire didn’t answer.
Instead, she placed another document in front of me.
A bank transfer.
My eyes moved across the page.
Then I saw the amount.
Five million dollars.
Sent to Vanessa.
The sender’s name was hidden.
But the date wasn’t.
The money arrived three days before my wedding.
I felt my hands go cold.
Because suddenly I wasn’t sure who had betrayed me.
And then my phone rang.
Vanessa.
I answered.
Her voice was shaking.
“Michael, please listen to me.””
I said nothing.
“There’s something you don’t know.””
I looked at the bank transfer.
“Apparently there’s a lot I don’t know.””
Silence.
Then she whispered:
“My mother didn’t plan the wedding for us.””
A pause.
“She planned it because she needed access to your father.””
My heart stopped.
“What are you saying?””
Vanessa began crying.
“My family never wanted you, Michael.””
The line went quiet.
May you like
Then she said the words that destroyed everything.
“They wanted Arthur Bennett’s son.””
