Chapter 3: The Woman Behind The Smile

The name hung in the air.

“Diane Whitmore.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

My father closed his eyes for a moment.

Like he had expected this day would eventually come.

Vanessa stared at her mother.

“No.””

Diane immediately shook her head.

“That’s ridiculous.””

Claire held up her phone.

“We have evidence.””

Diane’s confidence returned.

“You think you can accuse me at my daughter’s wedding?””

My father looked at her.

“You turned my son’s wedding into a battlefield.””

His voice was calm.

That made it worse.

Diane stepped closer.

“You think money makes you better than me?””

My father shook his head.

“No. Your actions did that.””

The guests watched like they were witnessing a courtroom.

But this wasn’t about money.

It was about betrayal.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked broken.

“Did you know?”” I asked.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“No.””

I wanted to believe her.

I really did.

Because once upon a time, Vanessa was the woman who sat beside my father in his old kitchen and listened to his stories.

She was the woman who told me she loved how much he cared about people.

But now I wondered if she ever meant any of it.

Claire opened a folder.

“Mrs. Whitmore attempted to use false investment documents to gain access to Bennett Holdings’ private accounts.””

Diane laughed.

“That’s impossible.””

My father looked at her.

“You should have read the contracts more carefully.””

Her smile vanished.

“You knew?””

“I knew someone was trying.””

“And you did nothing?””

“I wanted to know who.””

His eyes moved toward me.

“I wanted to know who would choose greed over family.””

The words hurt.

Because I realized my father had been testing the world around him.

And Vanessa’s family failed.

Diane stepped toward Vanessa.

“Say something.””

Vanessa looked at her mother.

“What did you do?””

Diane’s face hardened.

“I did what I had to do.””

“For money?””

“For security!””

Her voice echoed.

“You think love pays bills? You think being kind keeps you safe?””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew that wasn’t the real reason.

Diane wanted power.

She wanted status.

And she thought my father’s kindness meant weakness.

My father turned toward me.

“Michael, I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

“For letting you believe I had nothing.””

I shook my head.

“You didn’t owe me an explanation.””

He smiled sadly.

“I owed you the truth.””

A waiter accidentally dropped a glass.

The sound made everyone jump.

That was how tense the room had become.

Then Vanessa stepped forward.

“Mom, tell me you didn’t know who Arthur was.””

Diane stayed silent.

Vanessa’s face fell.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

The answer was barely a whisper.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“Then why did you let me marry his son?””

Diane looked at me.

“Because I thought he was just a regular man.””

That sentence destroyed whatever remained.

Not because she insulted my father.

But because she revealed the truth.

She didn’t hate him.

She hated what she thought he represented.

A person she believed had no value.

My father picked up his small blue gift box from the table.

He handed it to me.

“I made this for you.””

I opened it.

Inside was an old silver watch.

I recognized it immediately.

My grandfather’s watch.

The one my father always said was priceless.

“Dad…”

He smiled.

“Your grandfather gave it to me when I got married.””

My throat tightened.

“I wanted you to have it when you started your family.””

I looked at Vanessa.

At the woman who almost became my family.

Then I looked at my father.

The man who already was.

Suddenly, the ballroom doors opened again.

A man in a black suit entered.

He walked directly toward Diane.

“Mrs. Whitmore,” he said.

She turned.

“Yes?””

“I’m with the financial investigation department.””

The room froze.

He handed her an envelope.

“You are being requested for questioning regarding corporate fraud.””

Diane’s face turned white.

Vanessa whispered:

“Mom…”

But Diane didn’t look at her.

She looked at my father.

And smiled.

A dangerous smile.

“This isn’t over.””

Then she walked away.

But as she passed me, she stopped.

“You really think your father is the hero?””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

She leaned closer.

“You don’t know everything about Arthur Bennett.””

Then she walked out.

May you like

Leaving me with one terrifying thought.

What was my father still hiding?
