Chapter 9: The Last Lie

The next few weeks felt unreal.

Like I was living someone else’s life.

Richard was arrested.

Vanessa confessed.

Michael cooperated.

But none of it erased the years we lost.

The nights Emily spent trapped.

The birthdays she missed.

The memories Lily could never get back.

One evening, I sat with Emily on the back porch.

The same porch where we used to drink coffee before everything fell apart.

“I’m sorry,” I said.

Emily looked at me.

“For what?””

“For believing you left.””

She looked away.

“Daniel, you were lied to.””

“But I still believed it.””

She was quiet.

Then she reached for my hand.

“We both lost three years.””

I squeezed her fingers.

“We don’t have to lose more.””

Inside the house, Lily laughed.

A real laugh.

The kind I hadn’t heard in years.

For the first time, I thought maybe we could rebuild.

Then Emily received a letter.

No return address.

No name.

Just one sentence.

*You still don’t know why Vanessa chose you.*

Emily showed it to me.

My chest tightened.

“Who sent this?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

The police investigated.

But they found nothing.

Then another envelope arrived.

This time with a photograph.

A picture of Vanessa years before she met me.

Standing beside someone.

Someone I recognized.

My blood ran cold.

“Daniel?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because the person standing beside Vanessa was my father.

Emily looked at me.

“What does this mean?””

I stared at the photograph.

And suddenly every piece felt wrong.

Vanessa didn’t choose me randomly.

She had known my family before.

Long before.

I went through old boxes that night.

Documents.

Pictures.

Memories.

Until I found something hidden inside my father’s old desk.

A letter.

Not written to me.

Written to Vanessa.

My hands shook as I opened it.

*Vanessa, if you ever return, remember our agreement. Daniel must never know the truth about his mother.*

I stopped breathing.

My mother.

The one person nobody ever talked about.

Emily appeared behind me.

“What is it?””

I turned slowly.

“My father knew Vanessa.””

Her face went pale.

“What did she want?””

I read the final line.

May you like

And my entire world shattered.

*Because Vanessa was not trying to steal Daniel’s life. She was trying to expose it.*
