Chapter 4: The Evidence Vanessa Left Behind

Vanessa sat across from me in the interrogation room.

She looked exhausted.

But not defeated.

That bothered me.

People who lose everything usually look broken.

Vanessa looked like someone waiting for her final move.

“You want me to believe you?”” I asked.

She folded her hands.

“You loved me once.””

I stared at her.

“I thought I did.””

Her eyes hardened.

“That’s why this hurts.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You locked my wife in a room.””

“I protected you.””

The answer was so unbelievable I almost smiled.

“Protected me?””

Vanessa leaned forward.

“Emily was going to ruin your life.””

I pushed a folder toward her.

“Then explain this.””

Inside were documents from the estate.

Payments.

Transfers.

Photos.

Everything connecting Vanessa to Emily’s disappearance.

Vanessa looked at the papers.

Then smiled.

“She wanted you to find those.””

My stomach twisted.

“What?””

“She knew you would blame me.””

I stood.

“You’re lying.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Ask yourself something, Daniel. Why did Emily know where the key was?””

I froze.

Because I had wondered that too.

The brass key.

Hidden behind a painting.

Waiting for Lily to find it.

Vanessa watched my face.

“Exactly.””

When I returned to the hospital, I looked at Emily differently.

Not with suspicion.

With confusion.

“Why was the key there?””

Emily became silent.

That silence scared me.

“Emily.””

She closed her eyes.

“I didn’t put it there.””

“Then who did?””

A tear fell down her face.

“The person who wanted both of us to find the truth.””

“Who?””

Before she answered, Lily walked into the room.

She was holding an old photograph.

“Daddy?””

I looked at the picture.

It was from years ago.

Before Emily disappeared.

Before Vanessa entered our lives.

And standing beside Emily was someone I recognized.

Someone impossible.

My own brother.

Michael.

The man who had comforted me when Emily vanished.

The man who told me to move on.

The man who introduced me to Vanessa.

Emily whispered:

“He was there the night I disappeared.””
