Chapter 1: The Knocks Behind the Door

I had spent three years believing my wife abandoned us.

Three years of telling my daughter Lily that her mother loved her, even if she had chosen to leave. Three years of swallowing my own anger because I didn’t want my little girl to grow up hating the woman who gave her life.

And then, on the night I was supposed to announce my future with Vanessa, my missing wife knocked from behind a locked door.

The engagement party was supposed to be perfect.

The ballroom of the Hawthorne Estate glowed beneath golden chandeliers. Our friends and family laughed, champagne glasses clinked, and Vanessa moved through the crowd like she owned the place.

She wore a white dress.

Not bridal white.

But close enough to make me uncomfortable.

I told myself I was imagining things.

I told myself I was finally moving on.

Then Lily screamed.

“Daddy!””

I turned toward the sound.

My eight-year-old daughter stood near the old oak door at the end of the ballroom. Her face was soaked with tears. Her tiny hands were pressed against the wood.

“Mommy is inside!”” she cried.

The room went silent.

I felt every person watching me.

Vanessa crossed the room instantly.

“Lily, stop this,” she said, smiling too calmly.

“You’re embarrassing yourself.””

Lily shook her head.

“No! She’s in there!””

Vanessa grabbed her wrist.

“Get away from that door.””

The way she said it made my stomach twist.

Not worried.

Not confused.

Afraid.

Lily pulled away and pointed at her.

“You hid her so you could marry my dad!””

A wave of whispers spread through the room.

Vanessa laughed nervously.

“Oh my goodness. Everyone, I’m sorry. She’s been struggling lately.””

I stepped forward.

“What is going on?””

Vanessa immediately blocked me.

“She’s upset, Daniel. She misses her mother. Children create stories when they don’t understand things.””

I stared at her.

Because for the first time in three years, I wondered if maybe I was the one who had believed a story.

Then the sound came.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Three slow knocks from behind the locked oak door.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Vanessa’s face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Pure terror.

Lily reached behind a nearby painting and pulled out a small brass key.

“Daddy,” she whispered.

“Please.””

I took the key.

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“Don’t open that.””

Her voice was no longer sweet.

It was a warning.

I looked at her hand gripping mine.

Then I looked at the door.

I unlocked it.

The click echoed through the ballroom.

Slowly, I turned the handle.

A cold wave of air touched my face.

From inside the darkness came a weak whisper.

“Daniel…”

My heart stopped.

“Don’t let Vanessa see what’s inside.””

My blood ran cold.

Because I knew that voice.

It was the voice I had dreamed about hearing for years.

My wife.

Emily.

Behind me, Vanessa whispered one word.

“No.””

May you like

And everyone heard it.

Because she sounded like someone who had just watched a ghost return.
