Chapter 3: The Lie That Built Our Lives

The police arrived before sunrise.

Vanessa was gone.

Emily was taken to the hospital.

And I sat beside Lily in the waiting room, staring at a wall while my entire life collapsed around me.

Three years.

Every memory.

Every conversation.

Every moment I had blamed Emily.

All of it was suddenly poisoned by one question.

How could I have missed this?

Lily held my hand.

“Daddy?””

I looked at her.

“Yeah?””

“Are you mad at Mommy?””

My chest tightened.

“No, sweetheart.””

I swallowed.

“I’m mad that someone took her away from us.””

When Emily finally woke up, detectives questioned her.

I sat beside her.

She looked smaller than I remembered.

But her eyes were the same.

“I didn’t leave,” she said.

I nodded.

“I know.””

She looked down.

“Vanessa planned everything.””

I leaned closer.

“Tell me.””

Emily took a shaky breath.

“She worked at my company. She knew about our marriage problems.””

I frowned.

“Our problems?””

Emily looked ashamed.

“We were fighting because I found financial records.””

“What records?””

She hesitated.

“Money was disappearing from your company.””

My heart sank.

“My company?””

Emily nodded.

“Vanessa was involved.””

The room suddenly felt colder.

“She framed me,” Emily continued.

“She made it look like I stole money. Then she convinced me to meet her at the estate because she said she had proof that would clear my name.””

“And then?””

“She locked me inside.””

I stared at the floor.

All this time, I thought my wife left because she didn’t love us.

She had been trapped because someone wanted her gone.

Then Emily grabbed my hand.

“Daniel, there’s more.””

“What?””

“Vanessa didn’t do this alone.””

A knock came from the hospital door.

A detective entered.

“We found Vanessa.””

I stood.

“Where?””

The detective’s expression changed.

“She turned herself in.””

That didn’t make sense.

“Why?””

He looked at Emily.

“Because she says she has proof that your wife was planning to destroy you.””

Emily went pale.

“No.””

May you like

The detective continued.

“She claims Emily was never a victim.””
