Chapter 5: The Woman Waiting Outside Our House

Dad called the police that night.

He also contacted the bank, reported the suspicious transfer paperwork, and asked them to secure Lily's account while the documents were reviewed.

The bank representative told him that the account could be temporarily restricted pending verification. She also advised him to preserve the original paperwork and avoid confronting anyone who might be involved.

Dad followed every instruction.

But the threat changed something in him.

He no longer looked like a tired mechanic trying to save his marriage.

He looked like a father who had finally realized his family might be in danger.

At eleven forty-five, he checked every lock in the house.

At midnight, he moved Lily's bed into my room.

At twelve fifteen, he sat on the floor beside her mattress while she cried herself to sleep.

I watched from my desk, pretending to scroll through my phone.

“Dad?”” I whispered.

He looked up.

“Yeah?””

“Do you think Vanessa would really hurt her?””

He was quiet for a long time.

“I don't know what she's capable of anymore.””

The answer frightened me more than a simple yes.

Dad rubbed his hands over his face.

“I should have listened when you first told me something was wrong.””

I shook my head.

“I should have told you sooner.””

“We both missed things. But we're not going to keep making that mistake.””

He stood and walked toward the door.

“Get some sleep, Ethan. I'll be right downstairs.””

I nodded.

But I didn't sleep.

At two in the morning, I heard a car door close outside.

I sat up.

A pale beam of light moved across my bedroom wall.

Headlights.

Someone had parked across the street.

I got out of bed and moved toward the window.

A dark sedan sat beneath the streetlamp.

The engine was running.

I couldn't see the driver clearly, but the windshield reflected the yellow light, making the front seats look empty.

Then the driver's door opened.

A woman stepped out.

Vanessa.

She wore the same purple blouse from earlier, but she'd thrown a dark coat over it. Her hair was pulled into a tight bun, and she carried a small handbag in one hand.

She looked toward our house.

Then she looked directly at my window.

I stepped back.

My phone vibrated in my hand.

An unknown number.

*Tell your father to stop. This doesn't have to get ugly.*

I stared at the message.

Then another arrived.

*You have no idea what your sister signed.*

I took a screenshot and hurried downstairs.

Dad was in the living room, still awake, speaking quietly with someone from the bank.

“Dad.””

He turned.

“What is it?””

I showed him the window and the messages.

He went to the front door but didn't open it. Instead, he looked through the narrow glass panel beside the entrance.

Vanessa was standing at the end of the driveway.

She lifted one hand and waved.

Dad's face hardened.

He called the police again and told them his estranged wife was outside the house after threatening his family.

While we waited, Vanessa approached the front steps.

She knocked three times.

“David!”” she called.

“I know you're in there.””

Dad remained silent.

“David, open the door. We need to talk.””

He stepped closer to the glass.

“You need to leave.””

Her expression twisted.

“You can't keep me out of my own home!””

“You left. Now go.””

“I came back for my things.””

“Your things can be collected later, with someone present.””

She laughed bitterly.

“You're letting Ethan control you. That boy has always hated me.””

I stepped beside Dad.

“No, Vanessa. I just have a functioning conscience.””

Her eyes snapped toward me.

“You should be careful, Ethan.””

Dad moved in front of me.

“Don't threaten my son.””

Vanessa pressed both hands against the glass.

“Then ask him why he never told you what Lily did at school.””

I felt Lily appear behind us.

She had come downstairs wearing her pink pajamas, her braids loose around her shoulders.

“Don't,” she whispered.

Vanessa saw her through the glass.

“There you are.””

Lily froze.

Vanessa smiled.

“Tell your father about the school incident, sweetheart. Tell him what happened before I started trying to help you.””

Dad turned toward Lily.

“Is there something I need to know?””

Lily shook her head quickly.

“No.””

Vanessa struck the glass with the flat of her palm.

“Stop lying!””

Dad reached for his phone.

“That's enough. The police are on their way.””

Vanessa took a step back.

“You think the police will help you? You have no idea how this works.””

“Then explain it.””

She looked at Dad for a long moment.

Then she said something that made him go completely still.

“Your daughter wasn't the only person who signed those papers.””

Dad's hand tightened around his phone.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa smiled without warmth.

“It means Lily wasn't the only one who agreed to the arrangement.””

Dad shook his head.

“I never agreed to anything.””

“You don't remember because you weren't told everything.””

“Get off my property.””

Vanessa leaned closer to the glass.

“You should ask Mark what he put in your name.””

Before Dad could answer, blue lights flashed at the end of the street.

A police cruiser turned onto our road.

Vanessa glanced over her shoulder.

For the first time, genuine fear crossed her face.

She hurried down the steps and started toward her car.

But before she reached it, another vehicle pulled up behind the sedan.

A silver SUV.

The driver's door opened.

A man stepped out wearing a dark jacket and a silver watch.

Mark.

He looked at Vanessa, then at our house.

Vanessa began speaking urgently, gesturing toward the police cruiser.

Mark shook his head.

Then he walked straight toward our front door.

Dad pulled Lily behind him.

I stood beside the window, my phone recording.

Mark raised his hand to knock.

But before his knuckles touched the wood, he looked through the glass and spoke directly to Dad.

“David, don't let Vanessa tell you this was her idea.””

Dad stared at him.

Mark swallowed.

“Because the first transfer happened before she ever met you.””

The police officer stepped out of the cruiser.

Vanessa began shouting from the driveway.

Mark looked toward her, then back at Dad.

And he delivered the words that changed everything.

“Your daughter isn't the only victim here. Someone has been using your name for years—and if I tell you who started it, you'll never trust your own family again.””
