Chapter 3: The Papers She Was Never Supposed to Sign
Vanessa came down the stairs slowly.
The manila envelope was clutched beneath her arm, and her expression had changed from anger to something that looked almost like confidence.
I didn't trust it.
Not for a second.
Dad stood beside Lily's chair.
“Put the envelope on the table.””
Vanessa stopped three feet away.
“I will, but you're going to listen to me first.””
“No. You're going to put it down, and then you're going to explain why my daughter is afraid of you.””
Vanessa glanced at Lily.
“Because she knows what she's done.””
Dad's voice hardened.
“Do not look at her when you say that.””
Vanessa rolled her eyes and placed the envelope on the table.
“There. Happy?””
“No.””
He opened it.
Inside were several sheets of paper, a photocopy of Lily's school identification card, and a form bearing my father's signature.
I leaned closer.
“What is this?””
Vanessa quickly reached for the documents.
Dad moved them out of her reach.
“Don't touch anything.””
She straightened.
“It's a financial arrangement.””
“What financial arrangement?””
“The school has been asking for additional paperwork. Lily needed to confirm certain details, and I handled it.””
Lily shook her head.
“You told me it was a permission form.””
Vanessa turned toward her.
“And you signed it.””
Dad raised his voice.
“Stop trying to intimidate her!””
Vanessa looked offended.
“I'm not intimidating anyone. I'm explaining that Lily agreed to something and now wants to pretend she didn't.””
I picked up the first page.
The document contained Lily's full name, date of birth, and signature.
But it wasn't a school form.
It appeared to be an authorization connected to a savings account.
“Dad,” I said, “this doesn't look like school paperwork.””
He took the page from me.
His eyes moved across the printed text.
“What account is this?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“It's a custodial account.””
“For what?””
“Family expenses.””
Dad looked up sharply.
“Why would Lily's savings be used for family expenses?””
Lily went rigid.
“My savings?””
I turned toward her.
“What savings?””
She stared at the paper.
“The money Grandma left me.””
The kitchen went silent.
Our grandmother had died two years earlier. She'd been a retired nurse with a stubborn streak and a habit of slipping twenty-dollar bills into our coat pockets whenever Dad wasn't looking.
Before she died, she'd established a small trust for Lily's education.
Dad had told us the money would remain untouched until Lily was ready for college.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You said this was a school form?””
She pressed her lips together.
“I was trying to manage the account responsibly.””
Dad turned another page.
The document referenced a transfer request.
He read it twice.
Then he looked at Vanessa with an expression I'd never seen before.
“Did you move money out of Lily's account?””
“No.””
“Don't lie to me.””
“I didn't steal anything.””
“That wasn't my question.””
Vanessa's cheeks reddened.
“I paid household expenses. Your business was struggling, and someone had to make sure the bills were paid.””
Dad went very still.
“My business?””
He owned a small auto repair shop. It had a difficult winter, but we'd never been in danger of losing our home. He'd taken extra shifts and delayed buying himself a new truck to keep everything afloat.
He'd never asked Lily for a dollar.
“You used her education money to pay our bills?”” he asked.
“I used available family resources.””
“She's sixteen!””
“And you're her father!””
The words exploded out of Vanessa.
For a moment, she seemed to forget that Lily was sitting right there.
“You work all day, come home exhausted, and expect me to handle everything. The bills don't pay themselves, David. Someone had to make sacrifices.””
Dad stared at her.
“You could have asked me.””
“And what would you have said? No? Of course you would have said no. You treat Lily like she's made of glass.””
“Because she's a child!””
“She needs to learn that money doesn't grow on trees!””
I looked at the document again.
There were dates listed beside the transfer requests.
Several were from the previous month.
One was dated just nine days earlier.
“Dad,” I said, “this wasn't one emergency payment.””
He took the papers back.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“I was going to put the money back.””
“When?””
“When things improved.””
“Did Lily authorize the transfers?””
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
“She signed the paperwork.””
Lily shook her head.
“I didn't know what I was signing.””
“You were standing right there,” Vanessa snapped.
“You told me I'd be sent away if I didn't.””
Dad slammed his palm onto the table.
“Enough!””
The sound made Lily jump.
Dad immediately turned to her.
“I'm sorry, sweetheart. I didn't mean to frighten you.””
He took a breath and lowered his voice.
“Vanessa, we're finished discussing this tonight. You will not contact Lily about these papers. You will not ask her to sign anything else. And you will not access any of her accounts.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“You can't order me around like a criminal.””
“I can protect my daughter.””
“And what happens when you find out the money was used for things you needed?””
“Then I'll deal with the expenses myself.””
“You can't afford to.””
Dad's face hardened.
“That's my problem.””
Vanessa gave a short laugh.
“You think you're some hero because you watched a few recordings? You have no idea how much I've done for this family.””
I stepped between her and Lily.
“Then why did you make her afraid to eat?””
Vanessa looked at me with pure hatred.
“Because she never appreciates anything!””
Lily began to cry again.
Dad moved toward the stairs.
“Pack your things. You're leaving tonight.””
Vanessa's face went white.
“You wouldn't dare.””
“Try me.””
For a moment, I thought she'd scream.
Instead, she grabbed her purse, snatched her car keys from the counter, and walked toward the front door.
But before she left, she turned to Lily.
“You think your father can protect you from everything?””
Dad stepped in front of her.
“Get out.””
Vanessa's eyes moved between us.
Then she smiled.
It was a small, cold smile.
“You should ask your son what he did with the rest of the recordings.””
My stomach dropped.
Dad turned toward me.
“What does she mean?””
I opened my mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because there was something I hadn't told him.
The recordings hadn't only captured Vanessa mistreating Lily.
They'd also captured a conversation from the night I first installed the camera.
A conversation I hadn't understood at the time.
A conversation involving a second person.
Vanessa opened the front door.
“Ask Ethan why he deleted the first clip,” she said.
Then she walked out into the night.
Dad shut the door behind her.
He turned to me slowly.
“Ethan.””
I looked at Lily.
May you like
She was staring at me now, too.
“Tell me,” Dad said, “what did you delete?””
