Chapter 4: The Recording I Was Afraid to Show

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

Dad stood near the front door, one hand resting on the lock. Lily sat at the kitchen table with her arms wrapped around herself, the documents spread out in front of her.

The house felt different without Vanessa in it.

Quieter.

But not safer.

Not yet.

“Ethan,” Dad repeated.

“What did you delete?””

I dragged a chair away from the table and sat down.

“Nothing that proves I did something wrong.””

Dad's expression tightened.

“That isn't an answer.””

I unlocked my phone and opened the security app.

“When I first enabled the kitchen camera, I found a recording of Vanessa talking to someone on the phone. She was standing near the pantry. She said something about Lily's account, then mentioned that the money wasn't enough.””

Dad pulled out a chair.

“Who was she talking to?””

“I couldn't tell. The camera didn't capture the other person's voice clearly.””

“And you deleted it?””

“I thought I had.””

Lily stared at me.

“Why?””

I looked down at my hands.

“Because Vanessa told me she was arranging a surprise for you. She said she was helping you apply for a special summer program and that the money was a deposit. She told me not to spoil it.””

Dad's eyes narrowed.

“And you believed her?””

“I wanted to.””

That was the truth.

I'd wanted to believe Vanessa was simply strict. I'd wanted to believe Lily was going through a difficult phase. I'd wanted to believe the woman Dad loved wasn't capable of doing something terrible to a child.

I had ignored what was right in front of me because the alternative was too painful.

“I didn't erase the entire file,” I continued.

“The security system backs everything up to the cloud. I thought I deleted it from my phone, but I only removed the local copy.””

I opened the archived folder.

There it was.

A recording from three weeks earlier.

The date glowed in the corner of the screen.

I pressed play.

Vanessa appeared on the video, standing beside the kitchen counter with her phone pressed to her ear.

“No, she hasn't told him,” she said.

“She's too frightened to do that.””

A pause.

Then she laughed.

“Of course I know what I promised. But I need more time.””

Dad leaned closer to the screen.

Vanessa glanced toward the hallway.

“The account is still there. I haven't emptied it completely.””

My stomach tightened.

She lowered her voice.

“If David finds out, I'll tell him Lily authorized everything herself. She's a child. Nobody will take her seriously.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Dad stared at the phone as if he could somehow force the words to become something else.

Lily was trembling.

“She said that about me?””

I reached across the table.

“Lil—”

“Was she talking about my money?””

I hesitated.

Dad answered for me.

“It sounds like she was.””

Lily covered her face.

“I should have told you.””

Dad immediately moved beside her.

“No. Don't do that.””

“But I knew something was wrong.””

“You were scared. You were sixteen. You shouldn't have been put in that position.””

She shook her head.

“She said you'd be angry if I told you.””

Dad took her hands.

“Sweetheart, listen to me. I might get angry about what someone does, but I will never punish you for telling me the truth.””

Lily's lips trembled.

“Even if I signed the papers?””

“Even then.””

She leaned into him.

I looked at the screen again.

There was more to the recording. The timeline showed several additional clips from the same evening.

I opened the next one.

Vanessa stood near the pantry, holding a stack of envelopes. She placed them inside a large handbag, then checked the hallway before returning to the counter.

A few seconds later, another person entered the kitchen.

A man.

He wore a dark jacket and kept his face turned away from the camera.

He placed a folder on the table.

Vanessa opened it.

“You said the transfer would be completed by Friday,” she told him.

The man replied, but the audio was muffled.

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. I can't explain that to David. He'll ask where the money went.””

The man leaned closer.

Vanessa's voice dropped.

“Then make sure the paperwork is finished before he finds out.””

The clip ended.

Dad sat back.

“Who is that?””

“I don't know.””

He replayed the video.

The man had a distinctive silver watch on his left wrist. When he reached across the table, a small scar was visible near his thumb.

Dad paused the recording.

Then he went pale.

“What?”” I asked.

Dad didn't answer immediately.

He zoomed in on the man's hand, then leaned back in his chair.

“No,” he whispered.

“Dad?””

He looked at me.

“That's Mark.””

“Who is Mark?””

“My accountant.””

The room seemed to tilt.

Dad explained that Mark had managed the books for his repair shop for nearly five years. He was the person Dad trusted with payroll, invoices, and tax paperwork.

He was also the person who had recently helped him review the family's financial situation.

“Are you sure?”” I asked.

Dad nodded slowly.

“I gave him access to some of the household records when I was trying to organize the bills.””

Lily wiped her cheeks.

“Does that mean he helped Vanessa take my money?””

“I don't know yet,” Dad said.

“But I'm going to find out.””

He picked up the papers from the table and examined the signatures again.

Then he stopped.

“Ethan, look at this.””

He pointed to a line near the bottom of the transfer authorization.

The signature beside the witness section wasn't Mark's.

It was Dad's.

Or something that looked like Dad's.

The signature was nearly perfect, but the final stroke curved the wrong way.

Dad's expression hardened.

“I didn't sign this.””

I stared at the paper.

“Are you sure?””

“I know my own signature.””

Lily looked between us.

“Then who signed it?””

Dad gathered the documents into a neat stack.

“We're going to find out.””

He took out his phone and called Mark.

The call rang four times before going to voicemail.

Dad tried again.

This time, the call connected.

“David,” Mark said cheerfully.

“Everything okay?””

Dad looked directly at the camera recording.

“I need to ask you about a transfer connected to my daughter's savings account.””

Silence.

Then Mark said, “What transfer?””

Dad's voice became cold.

“The one you helped my wife arrange.””

Another silence.

When Mark spoke again, his cheerful tone was gone.

“David, I think you need to be careful about making accusations.””

Dad ended the call.

For several seconds, he sat without moving.

Then his phone buzzed.

A text message appeared from an unknown number.

Dad read it once.

Then he read it again.

His face changed.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He turned the screen toward us.

May you like

The message contained only one sentence.

*If you want your daughter to stay safe, stop looking into the account.*
