Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Locked Door

Dad didn't shout.

That was what frightened me most.

He stood in the middle of our kitchen, holding my phone with both hands, watching the recordings as though each one had taken something from him.

The first clip showed Vanessa taking Lily's dinner plate away.

The second showed her standing in front of the refrigerator while Lily asked for a glass of milk.

The third showed Vanessa pointing toward the laundry room and ordering my sister to finish washing everyone's clothes before she could go to bed.

Then came the clip from three nights earlier.

“If you tell your father what happens in this house, Lily, I'll make sure he sends you away.””

Lily buried her face against Dad's chest.

“Please turn it off,” she whispered.

Dad immediately lowered the phone.

“Okay, sweetheart. It's off.””

He kissed the top of her head.

“I'm sorry. I should never have made you watch that.””

Vanessa seized the opportunity.

“David, you're taking these recordings out of context. Lily has been difficult for months. She lies, she sneaks food, and she deliberately disobeys me whenever you're not home.””

I stared at her.

“You just watched yourself threaten her.””

“I was trying to correct her behavior!””

“By threatening to send her away?””

Vanessa pointed at me.

“Stay out of this.””

Dad raised one hand.

“Don't speak to my son.””

Her mouth snapped shut.

It was the first time I'd seen Vanessa obey someone without making a show of it.

Dad turned back to Lily.

“Sweetheart, I need you to tell me something. Have you been afraid of Vanessa?””

Lily's fingers twisted into the fabric of his work jacket.

She didn't answer.

“Lily?””

She nodded.

Dad closed his eyes.

One tear slipped down his cheek before he wiped it away with the back of his hand.

“I'm sorry,” he whispered.

“I'm so sorry I didn't see it.””

Lily shook her head frantically.

“It's not your fault.””

“I should have known.””

“You were working.””

“I should have known anyway.””

Vanessa made an impatient sound.

“Oh, for heaven's sake, David. You're making this into something it isn't. Children fight with their parents. That's normal.””

Dad slowly turned toward her.

“You are not her mother.””

Vanessa stiffened.

“I have been the one keeping this household running while you've been at work.””

“Then why is my daughter afraid to eat?””

“She needs boundaries!””

“Why is she afraid to tell me the truth?””

“Because she knows you'll take her side!””

Dad looked at her for a long moment.

Then he asked a question that made her lose her composure.

“What exactly have you told Lily will happen if she tells me anything?””

Vanessa's eyes darted toward the stairs.

I noticed.

So did Dad.

“Answer me.””

She folded her arms.

“I told her she might have to live somewhere else if she couldn't follow the rules.””

“Somewhere else where?””

“That depends on her behavior.””

“Don't play games with me, Vanessa.””

She lifted her chin.

“You're making a terrible mistake. Lily has always been emotionally fragile. She cries when she doesn't get her way, and Ethan encourages her to think she's a victim.””

I stepped forward.

“Don't you dare blame her.””

Dad held up a hand, stopping me.

“Ethan, give me a minute.””

Then he looked directly at Vanessa.

“Go upstairs and pack a bag.””

She stared at him.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

“David, you cannot be serious.””

“I'm very serious.””

“This is my home!””

Dad's jaw tightened.

“This is the home where my daughter is supposed to feel safe. And I just watched you make her afraid of eating a piece of bread.””

Vanessa's expression twisted.

“You're throwing away our marriage over a piece of toast?””

“No,” Dad said.

“I'm questioning our marriage because of what you did to my daughter.””

She grabbed her purse from the counter.

“Fine. I'll leave. But don't come crying to me when you discover what Lily has been doing behind your back.””

Lily flinched.

Dad noticed.

“Stop talking about her like she's the one on trial.””

Vanessa marched toward the hallway, her heels striking the floor with sharp, angry clicks.

At the bottom of the stairs, she stopped.

She turned back and looked at Lily.

“You'll regret this.””

Dad moved between them.

“Get upstairs. Now.””

Vanessa disappeared.

The moment she was gone, Lily's knees buckled.

Dad caught her and lowered her into a chair.

“Easy, sweetheart.””

“I can't breathe.””

“Look at me,” he said gently.

“You're safe. Take your time.””

I grabbed a glass of water from the counter and set it in front of her.

She tried to lift it, but her hands shook so badly that water spilled over her fingers.

I steadied the glass.

“Small sips, Lil.””

She drank.

Then she looked toward the stairs.

“Is she really leaving?””

Dad pulled a chair beside hers.

“She won't be coming near you tonight.””

“That's not what I asked.””

He swallowed.

“I don't know what happens with my marriage yet. But I know what happens with you. You are not going anywhere. This is your home.””

Lily stared at him.

“You promise?””

“I promise.””

She started crying again, but this time she leaned into him instead of shrinking away.

For several minutes, none of us spoke.

Then Dad noticed the bread bag on the counter.

He picked it up, turned it over, and dropped it into the trash.

“Ethan,” he said quietly, “how long have you been recording these things?””

“Two weeks.””

He looked at me.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“I wanted to be sure. Every time I said something before, Vanessa told you Lily was exaggerating. And I didn't want you to think I was trying to break up your marriage.””

Dad rubbed a hand over his face.

“You're my son. You don't have to protect my marriage from the truth.””

I looked away.

“I know that now.””

He reached across the table and squeezed my shoulder.

“Thank you for protecting your sister.””

A floorboard creaked upstairs.

All three of us looked toward the hallway.

Then came the sound of a drawer slamming.

Lily gripped Dad's sleeve.

“She knows,” she whispered.

Dad frowned.

“Knows what, sweetheart?””

Lily looked at me, then at him.

“There's something else.””

Her voice was so quiet I almost missed it.

“Something she made me do.””

Dad leaned forward.

“Tell me.””

Lily swallowed hard.

“Last month, she told me to sign some papers. She said they were just school forms, but when I asked why my name was on the wrong line, she got angry.””

“What papers?”” I asked.

“I don't know. She took them away.””

Dad's face changed.

“Where are they now?””

Lily looked toward the stairs again.

“In her bedroom.””

Before Dad could answer, Vanessa appeared at the top of the staircase.

She wasn't carrying a bag.

May you like

She was holding a thick manila envelope.

And when she saw us watching her, she gripped it against her chest and said, “David, before you throw me out, you need to understand what your daughter agreed to.””
