Chapter 8: The Woman From His Past

I listened to the recording three times.

Each time, it hurt differently.

“If Emily finds out about Sarah, everything falls apart.””

Those words stayed in my head.

Not because of who Sarah was.

Because of what Nathan’s fear revealed.

He wasn’t afraid of losing money.

He wasn’t afraid of losing his family.

He was afraid of me knowing the truth.

I called him.

He answered quickly.

“Emily?””

“Who is Sarah?””

Silence.

That was all I needed.

“Who is she?””

Nathan exhaled.

“Where did you hear that name?””

I laughed.

“Still avoiding the question?””

“Emily…”

“No. Answer me.””

A long pause.

Then:

“She was someone I knew before you.””

“Someone?””

“Yes.””

“Someone you loved?””

He didn’t answer.

And that was answer enough.

I sat down.

“When?””

“Before we met.””

“Did you ever see her after we got married?””

Silence.

“Nathan.””

Finally:

“Yes.””

The room went quiet.

“How many times?””

“I don’t know.””

I felt numb.

“You don’t know?””

“It wasn’t like that.””

“Then what was it?””

He sounded desperate.

“Emily, I was young.””

“You were married.””

“I never cheated on you.””

I closed my eyes.

“Then why hide her?””

“Because I knew you would misunderstand.””

I almost smiled.

People always said that when they wanted to avoid responsibility.

“You knew I would misunderstand because you knew it looked wrong.””

“That’s not fair.””

“No?””

My voice cracked.

“After everything, you’re talking about fairness?””

He didn’t respond.

The next day, Claire and I found Sarah.

Her full name was Sarah Collins.

She was an accountant who had worked with Robert’s company.

And according to the records, she had been involved in the same financial transfers that affected me.

But when I met her, I expected someone like Vanessa.

I expected someone cold.

Instead, I found a woman carrying her own guilt.

We met in a quiet park.

Sarah looked nervous.

“I didn’t know if I should come.””

“Why did you?””

She looked at me.

“Because I was tired of being afraid.””

I sat across from her.

“Tell me the truth.””

She nodded.

“Seven years ago, Nathan came to me.””

“About the documents?””

“Yes.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did you do?””

“I helped him organize the financial records.””

“Why?””

She looked ashamed.

“Because he told me you had agreed.””

I froze.

“He lied.””

“Yes.””

Sarah looked down.

“I found out later.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Vanessa threatened me.””

I sighed.

Another person controlled by fear.

“She said she would blame everything on me.””

Sarah wiped her eyes.

“I was wrong to stay silent.””

I looked at her.

“You were.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

For some reason, that honesty mattered.

Not enough to erase what happened.

But enough to understand.

Before leaving, Sarah gave me a flash drive.

“What’s this?””

“Everything I kept.””

I stared.

“Why?””

“Because I knew one day someone would need proof.””

That night, Claire reviewed the files.

Then she looked at me.

“This is it.””

“What?””

“Everything.””

She pointed at the screen.

“The transfers. The fake signatures. The communications.””

My heart pounded.

“Can we win?””

Claire looked at me.

“Yes.””

For the first time in months, I felt something I had forgotten.

Hope.

But then my phone rang.

Nathan.

I almost ignored it.

Almost.

I answered.

“Emily.””

His voice sounded broken.

“I need you to listen.””

“I’m listening.””

“Vanessa lied to me.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Another excuse.

“She told me she only wanted to protect the family.””

“And you believed her.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His voice dropped.

“Because she told me something about Sarah.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She said Sarah wasn’t the only person involved.””

I stood.

“What does that mean?””

Nathan was silent.

Then he whispered:

“Emily…”

“What?””

“Your grandmother wasn’t just warning you about my family.””

I waited.

“She was warning you about someone in yours.””

My blood ran cold.

“My family?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Nathan hesitated.

May you like

Then said:

“Your mother.””
