Chapter 3: The Papers in the Drawer

Nathan didn’t answer my question.

That told me more than words ever could.

“What documents, Nathan?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“Emily, it’s complicated.””

I smiled bitterly.

“That’s what people say when the truth is ugly.””

He sat down.

For the first time since he entered the room, he looked less angry.

More nervous.

“Vanessa thinks you found something in my father’s office.””

I frowned.

“Why would she think that?””

Nathan rubbed his hands together.

“I don’t know.””

I watched him carefully.

He was lying.

Not well.

But he was.

“Your family has spent years treating me like I’m temporary,” I said.

“Now suddenly there are documents everyone is worried about?””

Nathan looked at the floor.

“Please don’t make assumptions.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

He didn’t.

That was the moment I knew there were secrets in my marriage bigger than I imagined.

After he left, I called Claire.

“There’s something else,” I told her.

She was quiet.

“What did he say?””

I explained everything.

When I finished, Claire sighed.

“Emily, remember the paperwork you gave me?””

“Yes.””

“There was something unusual.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“One of the properties listed in your financial records doesn’t match what Nathan told you.””

I sat up.

“What property?””

“The house.””

I froze.

“My house?””

Claire paused.

“Yes.””

I looked around the hotel room.

The house I bought.

The house I renovated.

The house where my children grew up.

“What do you mean it doesn’t match?””

Claire lowered her voice.

“Your name appears on the original purchase documents. But later, there was a transfer made.””

“When?””

“Seven years ago.””

I felt cold.

“Who transferred it?””

She hesitated.

“Nathan.””

I couldn’t speak.

Seven years ago.

That was the same year Nathan convinced me to let him “handle more of the finances.””

The same year he told me I needed to trust him.

The same year I stopped checking every document.

My husband had changed something behind my back.

I spent the next hour going through every file I had saved.

Then I found it.

A scanned copy.

A document I barely remembered.

My hands shook as I opened it.

The signature was mine.

But the details were wrong.

Someone had added pages.

Someone had changed ownership information.

I called Claire immediately.

“I found something.””

“What?””

“My signature.””

Her voice became serious.

“Emily, don’t touch anything else. Send it to me.””

I did.

An hour later, Claire called back.

“Emily?””

“Yes?””

“I need you to stay calm.””

Those words never meant anything good.

“What?””

“The document appears to have been altered after you signed.””

I closed my eyes.

All those years.

All those sacrifices.

I had been building a life that someone else was quietly trying to take.

That evening, Nathan came back.

This time, he didn’t look angry.

He looked scared.

“Emily, we need to talk.””

I stood by the window.

“About the house?””

His face changed.

“How did you know?””

I laughed.

“Because unlike you, I pay attention.””

He sat down.

“Things aren’t what they seem.””

“That’s funny. I was about to say the same thing.””

Nathan looked exhausted.

“Vanessa made mistakes.””

I turned.

“Mistakes?””

“She handled some paperwork.””

I stared at him.

“You’re blaming your sister?””

“I’m saying she got involved where she shouldn’t have.””

“And you?””

He was silent.

That silence destroyed something inside me.

“You knew.””

Nathan looked away.

“I knew there were issues.””

“You knew?””

My voice rose.

“You knew someone was changing documents connected to my home?””

He stood.

“I was going to fix it.””

“When?””

He didn’t answer.

“After I found out? After I left? After you lost control?””

Nathan stepped closer.

“Emily, I love you.””

I stepped back.

“Love doesn’t hide paperwork.””

Before he could respond, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

Then his entire face changed.

“What?””

I watched him listen.

“What do you mean she found it?””

A pause.

Then:

“No. Emily can’t know about that.””

My heart stopped.

He looked up.

May you like

And realized I had heard every word.

“What can’t I know about?””
