Chapter 7: My Grandmother’s Warning

I spent the entire morning searching through old boxes.

My grandmother had been gone for five years, but she was the one person I wished I could talk to.

She had always seen through people.

When I was twenty-four, she told me something I never forgot.

“Emily, kindness is beautiful, but never confuse kindness with blindness.””

At the time, I laughed.

“Grandma, who are you warning me about?””

She just smiled.

“Life.””

I thought she was being dramatic.

Now I wondered if she knew exactly what was coming.

I searched through old photographs, letters, and documents.

Then I found the envelope.

Hidden inside an old recipe book.

My grandmother’s handwriting was on the front.

“For Emily. Open only when you truly need answers.””

My hands shook.

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Emily,

If you are reading this, something has happened that made you question the people around you.

I hope I am wrong.

But I learned something painful in my life.

Some people become close to you because they love you.

Others become close because they see what you have.

I froze.

I kept reading.

Nathan’s family has always been charming.

That is their strength.

They make people feel valued before they ask for something.

My heart raced.

How did she know?

Then I saw the next sentence.

Your father once trusted them too.

I stopped.

My father?

My father died when I was young.

I knew almost nothing about his relationship with Nathan’s family.

I continued.

Years ago, before you were born, your father invested in Robert’s business. He believed in helping friends.

But when the business struggled, Robert refused to accept responsibility.

Instead, he searched for someone else to carry the burden.

That someone was your father.

I covered my mouth.

The room spun.

My father had been betrayed by them.

And now they were doing the same thing to me.

The letter continued.

I never wanted you to carry this anger.

That is why I stayed silent.

But I protected your inheritance carefully.

The assets you received were not just money.

They were the result of years of your father’s hard work.

Do not allow anyone to convince you that protecting yourself is selfish.

I wiped my eyes.

The final line was underlined.

Trust actions, not apologies.

I folded the letter.

For years, I had waited for apologies.

From Nathan.

From Vanessa.

From everyone.

But apologies meant nothing when the behavior stayed the same.

That afternoon, I met Nathan at a restaurant.

He looked exhausted.

“I know you found something.””

I placed the letter on the table.

His face changed.

“Where did you get that?””

“My grandmother.””

He swallowed.

“Emily…”

“No.””

I leaned forward.

“Did you know about my father?””

He looked away.

That was enough.

“You knew.””

“Not everything.””

“But something.””

Nathan sighed.

“My father never talked about it.””

“Your mother did.””

Silence.

He looked at me.

“How do you know that?””

“Because your family has been lying for decades.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I didn’t know how deep it went.””

I shook my head.

“That’s your favorite excuse.””

He looked hurt.

“Emily, I did love you.””

“Then why did you keep choosing them?””

He had no answer.

After a moment, he whispered:

“Because they raised me.””

I nodded slowly.

“And I was your wife.””

He looked down.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

“Of losing my family.””

I stared at him.

“And you thought it was okay to risk losing me?””

His silence answered.

I stood.

“I’m done asking you to choose me.””

I walked away.

Outside, Claire was waiting.

She looked at my face.

“What happened?””

I handed her the letter.

She read it carefully.

Then she looked up.

“This changes everything.””

“How?””

“Because now we can prove intent.””

I frowned.

“Intent?””

“They didn’t accidentally hurt you.””

She closed the folder.

“They targeted you.””

That evening, something unexpected happened.

I received a message from Vanessa.

At first, I thought it was another insult.

But it wasn’t.

It was a photo.

A document.

And one sentence:

“Ask Nathan why he never told you about Sarah.””

I stared at the name.

Sarah.

I knew that name.

But I didn’t know why.

Then another message arrived.

A voice recording.

I pressed play.

Nathan’s voice filled my room.

“If Emily finds out about Sarah, everything falls apart.””

My blood turned cold.

Because Sarah wasn’t just a name.

Sarah was someone from Nathan’s past.

Someone he had promised me was gone forever.

And now I knew.

There was another secret.

May you like

One that had nothing to do with money.

And everything to do with my marriage.
