Chapter 4: The Family That Used Me

Nathan didn’t speak.

Neither did I.

The silence between us felt heavier than any argument we had ever had.

Finally, he whispered, “Emily…”

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

That surprised him.

“No more excuses.””

He looked exhausted.

“I can explain.””

“You’ve had twelve years.””

I walked toward the door.

“Apparently that wasn’t enough.””

He grabbed his jacket.

“Where are you going?””

I looked at him.

“That’s my question.””

He froze.

Because he knew.

I was done chasing answers from someone who kept hiding them.

The next morning, Claire and I met at her office.

She placed a stack of documents on the table.

“These are the records we found.””

I looked through them.

The more I read, the more my hands shook.

Nathan’s family had been using my money for years.

Not directly.

Carefully.

Quietly.

A loan here.

A transfer there.

A business expense that didn’t belong to me.

Small enough that I ignored them.

Large enough that they added up.

“They thought I wouldn’t notice,” I whispered.

Claire nodded.

“They counted on you trusting them.””

I stared at the papers.

“I trusted my husband.””

Claire’s expression softened.

“And that’s exactly why it hurts.””

That afternoon, Nathan asked to meet.

I almost refused.

But I needed answers.

We met at a quiet coffee shop.

He looked different.

Older.

Broken.

“Emily.””

I sat across from him.

“Tell me everything.””

He took a deep breath.

“My father’s business struggled years ago.””

I waited.

“Vanessa convinced me to move some assets around temporarily.””

“Temporarily?””

“Yes.””

“How temporary?””

Nathan looked away.

“Seven years.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“You lied to me for seven years.””

“I was trying to protect everyone.””

“No. You were protecting yourself.””

He rubbed his face.

“I thought I could fix it.””

“You thought you could fix stealing from me?””

His eyes widened.

“I never stole from you.””

I leaned forward.

“Then what do you call using my property to secure your family’s debt without telling me?””

He had no answer.

For once.

No excuse.

No defense.

Just silence.

Then he said something I never expected.

“Vanessa told me she would destroy you if you found out.””

I stared.

“Why?””

Nathan swallowed.

“Because she knew you would leave.””

The pain of hearing that was strange.

Because part of me already knew.

But hearing it confirmed everything.

She wasn’t afraid of losing me.

She was afraid of losing control.

That evening, I returned to the hotel.

Lily was sitting on the bed drawing.

I sat beside her.

“Mom?””

“Yes?””

“Are you and Dad getting divorced?””

I looked at my daughter.

Children always know more than adults think.

“I don’t know yet.””

She looked down.

“Is it because of Aunt Vanessa?””

I was silent.

Then she whispered:

“I always knew she was mean to you.””

My heart broke.

“You did?””

She nodded.

“She talks differently when Dad is around.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Because it was true.

Vanessa wasn’t powerful because she was cruel.

She was powerful because people allowed her to be.

That night, I opened the final file on my laptop.

The one I had avoided opening.

The reason I had been preparing for months.

Inside was evidence of something even bigger than the house.

Something involving Nathan’s family business.

Something that could change everything.

I stared at the first page.

Then the second.

Then the name at the bottom.

A name I never expected to see.

My hands went cold.

May you like

Because the person who had helped Vanessa hide everything…

was someone I trusted.
